Charge and energy transfer in ac-driven Coulomb-coupled double quantum dots

We study the dynamics of charge and energy currents in a Coulomb-coupled double quantum dot system, when only one of the two dots is adiabatically driven by a time-periodic gate that modulates its energy level. Although the Coulomb coupling does not allow for electron transfer between the dots, it enables an exchange of energy between them which induces a time variation of charge in the undriven dot. We describe the effect of electron interactions at low temperature using a time-dependent slave-spin 1 formulation within mean-field that efficiently captures the main effects of the strong correlations as well as the dynamical nature of the driving. We find that the currents induced in the undriven dot due to the mutual friction between inter-dot electrons are same order than those generated in the adiabatically driven dot. Interestingly, up to 43$\%$ percent of the energy injected by the ac sources can be transferred from the driven dot to the undriven one. We complete our analysis by studying the impact of the Coulomb interaction on the resistance of the quantum dot that is driven by the gate.

Slave-Spin 1 formulation: A simple approach to time-dependent transport through an interacting two level system

We introduce and develop a slave-spin mean-field technique for describing a generic interacting two level systems under time-dependent drivings, where an auxiliary S=1 spin is added to describe the localized character of the electrons. We show that the approach efficiently captures the main effects of the strong correlations as well as the dynamical nature of the driving, while remaining simple enough to allow for an analytical treatment. Our formalism provides a flexible solution method, which can be applied to different device configurations at an extremely small numerical cost. Furthermore, it leads to a very practical description of adiabatically driven systems in terms of frozen static solutions.

Enhanced performance of a quantum-dot-based nanomotor due to Coulomb interactions

We study the relation between quantum pumping of charge and the work exchanged with the driving potentials in a strongly interacting ac-driven quantum dot. We work in the large-interaction limit and in the adiabatic pumping regime, and we develop a treatment that combines the time-dependent slave-boson approximation with linear response in the rate of change of the ac-potentials. We find that the time evolution of the system can be described in terms of equilibrium solutions at every time. We analyze the effect of the electronic interactions on the performance of the dot when operating as a quantum motor. The main two effects of the interactions are a shift of the resonance and an enhancement of the efficiency with respect to a non-interacting dot. This is due to the appearance of additional ac-parameters accounting for the interactions that increase the pumping of particles while decreasing the conductance.

Probing the energy reactance with adiabatically driven quantum dots

The tunneling Hamiltonian describes a particle transfer from one region to the other. While there is no particle storage in the tunneling region itself, it has associated certain amount of energy. We name the corresponding flux energy reactance since, like an electrical reactance, it manifests itself in time-dependent transport only. Noticeably, this quantity is crucial to reproduce the universal charge relaxation resistance for a single-channel quantum capacitor at low temperatures. We show that a conceptually simple experiment is capable of demonstrating the existence of the energy reactance.

Periodic energy transport and entropy production in quantum electronics

The problem of time-dependent particle transport in quantum conductors is nowadays a well established topic. In contrast, the way in which energy and heat flow in mesoscopic systems subjected to dynamical drivings is a relatively new subject that cross-fertilize both fundamental developments of quantum thermodynamics and practical applications in nanoelectronics and quantum information. In this short review, we discuss from a thermodynamical perspective recent investigations on nonstationary heat and work generated in quantum systems, emphasizing open questions and unsolved issues.

Time resolved heat exchange in driven quantum systems

We study time-dependent heat transport in systems composed of a resonant level periodically forced with an external power source and coupled to a fermionic continuum. This simple model contains the basic ingredients to understand time resolved energy exchange in quantum capacitors that behave as single particle emitters. We analyse the behaviour of the dynamic heat current for driving frequencies within the non-adiabatic regime, showing that it does not obey a Joule dissipation law.

Dynamics of energy transport and entropy production in ac-driven quantum electron systems

We analyze the time-resolved energy transport and the entropy production in ac-driven quantum coherent electron systems coupled to multiple reservoirs at finite temperature. At slow driving we formulate the first and second laws of thermodynamics valid at each instant of time. We identify heat fluxes flowing though the different pieces of the device and emphasize the importance of the energy stored in the contact and central regions for the second law of thermodynamics to be instantaneously satisfied. In addition, we discuss conservative and dissipative contributions to the heat flux and to the entropy production as a function of time. We illustrate these ideas with a simple model corresponding to a driven level coupled to two reservoirs with different chemical potentials.

Adiabatic response and quantum thermoelectrics for ac driven quantum systems

We generalize the theory of thermoelectrics to include coherent electron systems under adiabatic ac driving, accounting for quantum pumping of charge and heat as well as the associated work exchange between electron system and driving potentials. We derive the relevant response coefficients in the adiabatic regime and show that they obey Onsager reciprocity relations. We analyze the consequences of our generalized thermoelectric framework for quantum motors, generators, heat engines, and heat pumps, characterizing them in terms of efficiencies and figures of merit.

Dynamical energy transfer in ac driven quantum systems

We analyze the time-dependent energy and heat flows in a resonant level coupled to a fermionic continuum. The level is periodically forced with an external power source that supplies energy into the system. Based on the tunneling Hamiltonian approach and scattering theory, we discuss the different contributions to the total energy flux. We then derive the appropriate expression for the dynamical dissipation, in accordance with the fundamental principles of thermodynamics. Remarkably, we find that the dissipated heat can be expressed as a Joule law with a universal resistance that is constant at all times.
