On the periodic orbits of C0-typical impulsive semiflows

Impulsive semiflows modeled by continuous flows and continuous impulsive functions, defined over an impulsive region, are piecewise continuous semiflows with piecewise smooth trajectories. In this paper we contribute to the topological description of typical impulsive semiflows, parameterized by both flows and impulses. We prove that $C^0$-generic continuous flows generate impulsive semiflows with denseness of periodic orbits on the non-wandering set. Additionally, we show that $C^0$-generic impulses generate impulsive semiflows with denseness of periodic orbits on the impulsive non-wandering set.

Genericity of ergodicity for Sobolev homeomorphisms

In this paper we obtain a weak version of Lusin's theorem in the Sobolev-$(1,p)$ uniform closure of volume preserving Lipschitz homeomorphisms on closed and connected $d$-dimensional manifolds, $d \geq 2$ and $0<p<1$. With this result at hand we will be able to prove that the ergodic elements are generic. This establishes a version of Oxtoby and Ulam theorem for this Sobolev class. We also prove that, for $1\leq p<d-1$, the topological transitive maps are generic.

Isospectral Reductions of Non-negative Matrices

Isospectral reduction is an important tool for network/matrix analysis as it reduces the dimension of a matrix/network while preserving its eigenvalues and eigenvectors. The main contribution of this manuscript is a proposed algorithmic scheme to approximate the stationary measure of a stochastic matrix based on isospectral reductions. We run numerical experiments that indicate this scheme is advantageous when there is more than one eigenvalue near 1, precisely the case where iterative methods perform poorly. We give a partial explanation why this scheme should work well, showing that in some situations isospectral reduction improves the spectral gap.

Abundance of periodic orbits for typical impulsive flows

Impulsive dynamical systems, modeled by a continuous semiflow and an impulse function, may be discontinuous and may have non-intuitive topological properties, as the non-invariance of the non-wandering set or the non-existence of invariant probability measures. In this paper we study dynamical features of impulsive flows parameterized by the space of impulses. We prove that impulsive semiflows determined by a C1-Baire generic impulse are such that the set of hyperbolic periodic orbits is dense in the set of non-wandering points which meet the impulsive region. As a consequence, we provide sufficient conditions for the non-wandering set of a typical impulsive semiflow (except the discontinuity set) to be invariant. Several applications are given concerning impulsive semiflows obtained from billiard, Anosov and geometric Lorenz flows.

Billiards in generic convex bodies have positive topological entropy

We show that there exists a $C^2$ open dense set of convex bodies with smooth boundary whose billiard map exhibits a non-trivial hyperbolic basic set. As a consequence billiards in generic convex bodies have positive topological entropy and exponential growth of the number of periodic orbits.

Isospectral Reduction in Infinite Graphs

L. A. Bunimovich and B. Z. Webb developed a theory for transforming a finite weighted graph while preserving its spectrum, referred as isospectral reduction theory. In this work we extend this theory to a class of operators on Banach spaces that include Markov type operators. We apply this theory to infinite countable weighted graphs admitting a finite structural set to calculate the stationary measures of a family of countable Markov chains.

On shadowing and hyperbolicity for geodesic flows on surfaces

We prove that the geodesic flow on closed surfaces displays a hyperbolic set if the shadowing property holds C2-robustly on the metric. Similar results are obtained when considering even feeble properties like the weak shadowing and the specification properties. Despite the Hamiltonian nature of the geodesic flow, the arguments in the present paper differ completely from those used in [5] for Hamiltonian systems.

Eigenvectors of isospectral graph transformations

L.A. Bunimovich and B.Z. Webb developed a theory for isospectral graph reduction. We make a simple observation regarding the relation between eigenvectors of the original graph and its reduction, that sheds new light on this theory. As an application we propose an updating algorithm for the maximal eigenvector of the Markov matrix associated to a large sparse dynamical network.

The C0 general density theorem for geodesic flows

Given a closed Riemannian manifold, we prove the C0-general density theorem for continuous geodesic flows. More precisely, that there exists a residual (in the C0-sense) subset of the continuous geodesic flows such that, in that residual subset, the geodesic flow exhibits dense closed orbits.

We provide a characterization of r-regular sets in terms of the Lipschitz regularity of normal vector fields to the boundary.
