Schwinger-Keldysh Path Integral for Gauge theories

We develop the Schwinger-Keldysh path-integral formalism for open non-Abelian gauge theories that are gauge-fixed via the BRST method in covariant gauges. We focus on generic initial states, pure and mixed, specified at finite times suitable for non-equilibrium processes. We pay particular attention to the handling of the indefinite Hilbert space, the construction of BRST-invariant Schrodinger picture wavefunctionals, density matrices and inner product, the implementation of the Hata-Kugo prescription, and the role of boundary terms at both the initial and final times. We highlight the advantages of the Nakanishi-Lautrup field representation in dealing with initial/final conditions. The resulting Schwinger-Keldysh path integral is manifestly invariant under a diagonal (retarded) BRST symmetry for arbitrary physical initial states, whether pure or mixed. From this, we obtain the corresponding Ward-Takahashi-Slavnov-Taylor identities, valid perturbatively. Non-perturbatively the Gribov ambiguity is expected to break or modify the BRST symmetry. The naive advanced BRST symmetry is shown to be explicitly violated by the in-in boundary conditions. We show that the Feynman-Vernon influence functional derived by integrating out charged matter and/or hard gluon modes remains (perturbatively) BRST invariant. When the Open EFT action is expanded to second order in advanced fields it exhibits an exact symmetry under a contraction of the original BRST symmetry. This Keldysh BRST symmetry is equivalent to the BRST associated with the retarded gauge transformations together with a linearly realized BRST transformation of the advanced fields. These govern the structure of the leading terms in an Open EFT. We illustrate this with the explicit example of Hard Thermal Loop Effective Theory, and construct the general form of the Open EFT in a Higgs phase when all gauge symmetries are spontaneously broken.

Gauging Open EFTs from the top down

We present explicit top-down calculations of Open EFTs for gauged degrees of freedom with a focus on the effects of gauge fixing. Starting from the in-in contour with two copies of the action, we integrate out the charged matter in various $U(1)$ gauge theories to obtain the Feynman-Vernon influence functional for the photon, or, in the case of symmetry breaking, for the photon and St\"uckelberg fields. The influence functional is defined through a quantum path integral, which -- as is always the case when quantizing gauge degrees of freedom -- contains redundancies that must be eliminated via a gauge-fixing procedure. We implement the BRST formalism in this setting. The in-in boundary conditions break the two copies of BRST symmetry down to a single diagonal copy. Nevertheless the single diagonal BRST is sufficient to ensure that the influence functional is itself gauge invariant under two copies of gauge symmetries, retarded and advanced, regardless of the choice of state or symmetry-breaking phase. We clarify how this is consistent with the decoupling limit where the global advanced symmetry is generically broken by the state. We illustrate our results with several examples: a gauge field theory analogue of the Caldeira-Leggett model, spinor QED with fermions integrated out, scalar QED in a thermal state, the Abelian Higgs-Kibble model in the spontaneously broken state with the Higgs integrated out, and Abelian Higgs-Kibble model coupled to a charged bath in a symmetry-broken phase. The latter serves as an example of an open system for St\"uckelberg/Goldstone fields.

The Serendipitous Axiodilaton: A Self-Consistent Recombination-Era Solution to the Hubble Tension

Axio-dilaton cosmology provides a minimal benchmark model for both Dark Matter (DM) and Dark Energy (DE) that is well motivated by fundamental physics. The axion and dilaton arise as pseudo-Goldstone modes of symmetries that predict particle masses depend on the dilaton, and therefore to evolve cosmologically, leading to correlated modifications of recombination physics, the sound horizon, and late-time expansion and growth histories. We confront this model with Planck 2018 temperature, polarisation, and lensing data, SPT-3G high-$\ell$ measurements, DESI DR2 BAO, and Pantheon$+$ supernovae, assuming that the axion makes up all of the dark matter and that the dilaton plays the role of a dark energy field. We find that it fits the data somewhat better than $\Lambda$CDM cosmology, with the $\chi^2$ lowered by $\simeq 7$ for three additional parameters, and significantly raises the inferred Hubble constant to $H_0 \simeq 69.2\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}\,Mpc^{-1}}$, reducing the Hubble tension to $\lesssim 3\sigma$ and thereby allowing a joint fit of CMB and SH0ES data. The model fits this enlarged data set as well as the $w_0w_a$ model with an electron mass modified by hand at recombination, though it does so with calculable dynamics. Axio-dilaton self-interactions robustly fake a phantom equation of state in DESI measurements. There is a sting: cosmology prefers dilaton-matter couplings $|\mathbf{g}|\sim 10^{-2}$-$10^{-1}$, which are large enough to have been detected in solar-system tests of General Relativity. These results show how axio-dilatons can provide a viable cosmology preferred by current data at surprisingly large couplings, within a framework that links dark energy, dark matter, and time-dependent particle masses in a coherent way. They suggest both new observable signals and new theoretical directions, aimed at resolving the apparent inconsistency with non-cosmological observations.

Extending Weinberg's EFT: effective scalar-tensor theories up to sixth order

We present a systematic construction of the six-derivative effective scalar-tensor theories, extending the four-derivative framework previously developed by Steven Weinberg. The on-shell effective field theory comprises five parity-even and three parity-odd independent six-derivative scalar-tensor interactions, representing all inequivalent deformations consistent with general covariance. We further confirm this operator counting through an independent analysis using the scattering amplitude formalism in four-dimensional flat spacetime. The six-derivative Lagrangian constructed here provides the next-to-leading-order extension of scalar-tensor gravity, furnishing a robust framework for exploring quantum or stringy corrections, parity-violating interactions, and strong-curvature effects in cosmology, black hole physics and gravitational wave observations.

A Minimal Axio-dilaton Dark Sector

In scalar-tensor theories it is the two-derivative sigma-model interactions that like to compete at low energies with the two-derivative interactions of General Relativity (GR) $\unicode{x2014}$ at least once the dangerous zero-derivative terms of the scalar potential are suppressed (such as by a shift symmetry). But nontrivial two-derivative interactions require at least two scalars to exist and so never arise in the single-scalar models most commonly explored. Axio-dilaton models provide a well-motivated minimal class of models for which these self-interactions can be explored. We review this class of models and investigate whether these minimal two fields can suffice to describe both Dark Matter and Dark Energy. We find that they can $\unicode{x2014}$ the axion is the Dark Matter and the dilaton is the Dark Energy $\unicode{x2014}$ and that they robustly predict several new phenomena for the CMB and structure formation that can be sought in observations. These include specific types of Dark Energy evolution and small space- and time-dependent changes to particle masses post-recombination that alter the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect, cause small changes to structure growth and more.

New shape for cross-bispectra in Chern-Simons gravity

Chern-Simons gravity is known to suffer from graviton ghost production during inflation, which suppresses the parity-violating power spectrum at scales relevant to cosmic microwave background observations. In this work, we show that allowing the initial conditions of inflation to deviate from the standard Bunch-Davies state can enhance parity-violating non-Gaussianity in the scalar-tensor cross-bispectra. Our results reveal a significant additional contribution to the cross-bispectra in the flattened configuration, offering a new avenue to constrain parity-violating gravity.

CMB Implications of Multi-field Axio-dilaton Cosmology

Axio-dilaton models are among the simplest scalar-tensor theories that contain the two-derivative interactions that naturally compete at low energies with the two-derivative inter-actions of General Relativity. Such models are well-motivated as the low energy fields arising from string theory compactification. We summarize these motivations and compute their cosmological evolution, in which the dilaton acts as dark energy and its evolution provides a framework for dynamically evolving particle masses. The derivative axion-dilaton couplings play an important role in the success of these cosmologies. We derive the equations for fluctuations needed to study their implications for the CMB anisotropy, matter spectra and structure growth. We use a modified Boltzmann code to study in detail four benchmark parameter choices, including the vanilla Yoga model, and identify couplings that give viable cosmologies, including some with surprisingly large matter-scalar interactions. The axion has negligible potential for most of the cosmologies we consider but we also examine a simplified model for which the axion potential plays a role, using axion-matter couplings motivated by phenomenological screening considerations. We find such choices can also lead to viable cosmologies.

New shape of parity-violating graviton non-Gaussianity

We show that the general vacuum states that respect the de Sitter symmetry, known as the {\alpha}-vacua, can introduce non-vanishing parity-violating tensor non-Gaussianities. This is due to the mixing by the Bogoliubov transformation of the positive and negative frequency modes of the Bunch-Davies vacuum. We calculate explicitly the bispectra of tensor perturbations and show that the amplitude can be exponentially enhanced for certain choices of the squeezing parameter {\alpha} and the phase {\phi} of the {\alpha}-vacua. We find a new shape for the parity-violating tensor bispectrum which peaks in the flattened configuration

General Effective Field Theory of Teleparallel Gravity

We construct the Effective Field Theory (EFT) of the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity (TEGR). Firstly, we present the necessary field redefinitions of the scalar field and the tetrads. Then we provide all the terms at next-to-leading-order, containing the torsion tensor and its derivatives, and derivatives of the scalar field, accompanied by generic scalar-field-dependent couplings, where all operators are suppressed by a scale $\Lambda$. Removing all redundant terms using the field redefinitions we result to the EFT of TEGR, which includes significantly more terms comparing to the EFT of General Relativity. Finally, we present an application in a cosmological framework. Interestingly enough, although GR and TEGR are completely equivalent at the level of classical equations, we find that their corresponding EFTs possess minor but non-zero differences. Hence, we do verify that at higher energies the excitation and the features of the extra degrees of freedom are slightly different in the two theories, thus making them theoretically distinguishable. Nevertheless, we mention that these differences are suppressed by the heavy mass scale $\Lambda$ and thus it is not guaranteed that they could be measured in future experiments and observations.

Effective field theory of waterfall in hybrid inflation

We examine the validity of the classical approximation of the waterfall phase transition in hybrid inflation from an effective field theory (EFT) point of view. The EFT is constructed by integrating out the waterfall field fluctuations, up to one-loop order in the perturbative expansion. Assuming slow-roll conditions are obeyed, right after the onset of the waterfall phase, we find the backreaction of the waterfall field fluctuations to the evolution of the system can be dominant. In this case the classical approximation is completely spoiled. We derive the necessary constraint that ensures the validity of the EFT.

Non-Gaussian Signatures of a Thermal Big Bang

What if Big Bang was hot from its very inception? This is possible in a bimetric theory where the source of fluctuations is thermal, requiring the model to live on a critical boundary in the space of parameters and can be realized when an anti-DBI brane moves within an $EAdS_2 \times E_3$ geometry. This setup renders the model unique, with sharp predictions for the scalar spectral index and its running. We investigate the non-Gaussian signatures of this thermal bimetric model, or "bi-thermal" for short. We adapt the standard calculation of non-Gaussianities for $P(X,ϕ)$ models to the thermal nature of the model, emphasising how the bi-thermal peculiarities affect the calculation and alter results. This leads to precise predictions for the shape and amplitude of the three-point function of the bi-thermal model (at tree-level): $f^{\rm local} _{\rm NL} = -3/2$ and $f^{\rm equil} _{\rm NL} = -2 + 4 \sqrt{3}π/9 \simeq 0.4$. We also discover a new shape of flattened non-gaussianity $\propto (k_1+k_2-k_3)^{-3/2} +$ permutations, which is expected due to the excited thermal initial conditions. These results, along with our earlier predictions for the scalar power spectrum, provide sharp targets for the future generation of cosmological surveys.

Chiral primordial gravitational waves in extended theories of Scalar-Tensor gravity

We re-examine the problem of parity violation in single field inflation. We look for a systematic way to parametrically approach the scale at which maximal parity violation occurs, which is where we expect to find the presence of the Chern Simons instability. We do so by considering possible realizations of the effective field theory of Scalar-Tensor gravity, which could offer a rich phenomenology. The gravitational action is extended to include derivatively coupled interactions which, by means of a disformal transformation, are scaled by negative powers of a small parameter which is identified with the graviton speed. This results in suppressing the cutoff scale of the effective theory leading to parametrically large chiral tensor fluctuations. We conclude that a change in the physical description of the system is necessary in order to maintain sufficient parity violation as well ensure stability of the modes.

A new mechanism to enhance primordial tensor fluctuations in single field inflation

We discuss a new mechanism to enhance the spectrum of primordial tensor fluctuations in single field inflationary scenarios. The enhancement relies on a transitory non-attractor inflationary phase, which amplifies the would-be decaying tensor mode, and gives rise to a growth of tensor fluctuations at superhorizon scales. We show that the enhancement produced during this phase can be neatly treated via a tensor duality between an attractor and non-attractor phase, which we introduce. We illustrate the mechanism and duality in a kinetically driven scenario of inflation, with non-minimal couplings between the scalar and the metric.

Squeezed tensor non-Gaussianity in non-attractor inflation

We investigate primordial tensor non-Gaussianity in single field inflation, during a phase of non-attractor evolution when the spectrum of primordial tensor modes can be enhanced to a level detectable at interferometer scales. Making use of a tensor duality we introduced in arXiv:1808.10475, we analytically compute the full bispectrum of primordial tensor fluctuations during the non-attractor era. During this epoch the shape of the tensor bispectrum is enhanced in the squeezed limit, its amplitude can be amplified with respect to slow-roll models, and tensor non-Gaussianity can exhibit a scale dependence distinctive of our set-up. We prove that our results do not depend on the frame used for the calculations. Squeezed tensor non-Gaussianity induces a characteristic quadrupolar anisotropy on the power spectrum of the stochastic background of primordial tensor perturbations. As a step to make contact with gravitational wave experiments, we discuss the response function of a ground based Michelson interferometer to a gravitational wave background with such a feature.
