Heavy quark thermodynamics with anisotropic lattices

We present recent results from the FASTSUM collaboration, using anisotropic lattice QCD to study spectral properties of heavy quarkonia and open heavy flavour systems at high temperature. For heavy quarkonium, our results using a number of different methods suggest a small but significant and robust negative mass shift as well as an increasing thermal width. We present the first lattice results for masses and spectral functions of B mesons at high temperature, and preliminary results for a high-precision calculation of the static quark potential.

The COSMIC WISPers White Paper: The physics case for Weakly Interacting Slim Particles

Axions and other very weakly interacting slim particles (WISPs), with masses below 1 GeV, arise naturally in many extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics. In particular, they could offer a new framework to explain the nature of dark matter and may help address a range of puzzling observations in astrophysics and particle physics. This review provides an overview of ongoing WISP searches and outlines the prospects for the next decade, spanning their theoretical motivation, indirect signatures in astrophysical observations, and dedicated laboratory experiments. It is based on the work carried on by the EU-funded COST Action ``Cosmic WISPers in the Dark Universe: Theory, astrophysics, and experiments'' (CA21106, https://www.cost.eu/actions/CA21106). This network plays a key role in coordinating and supporting WISP searches across Europe, while also contributing to the development of a roadmap aimed at securing European leadership in this research area. It is emphasized that Europe is currently pursuing a rich, diverse, and cost-effective experimental program, with the potential to deliver one or more transformative discoveries.

Approaching the continuum with anisotropic lattice thermodynamics

The FASTSUM collaboration has a long-standing programme of using anisotropic lattice QCD to investigate strong interaction thermodynamics, and in particular spectral quantities. Here we present first results from our new ensemble which has a temporal lattice spacing a_t=15am and anisotropy xi=a_s/a_t=7, giving unprecedented resolution in the temporal direction. We show results for the chiral transition, vector-axial-vector degeneracy, and heavy quarkonium, and compare them with earlier results with coarser time resolution.

Finite temperature hadronic spectral properties

The FASTSUM collaboration has a long-standing project examining hadronic properties using anisotropic lattice QCD. We determine the spectral properties of bottomonia at finite temperature using lattice NRQCD and describe how our newer simulations improve our control over systematic errors. Motivated by these efforts, the temperature dependence of charm hadron masses is determined where it is found that temperature effects can extend into the confining phase and that some species remain stable deep past the pseudo-critical temperature.

Spectral properties of bottomonium at high temperature: a systematic investigation

We investigate spectral features of bottomonium at high temperature, in particular the thermal mass shift and width of ground state S-wave and P-wave state. We employ and compare a range of methods for determining these features from lattice NRQCD correlators, including direct correlator analyses (multi-exponential fits and moments of spectral functions), linear methods (Backus-Gilbert, Tikhonov and HLT methods), and Bayesian methods for spectral function reconstruction (MEM and BR). We comment on the reliability and limitations of the various methods.

NRQCD Bottomonium at non-zero temperature using time-derivative moments

A well-known challenge for the lattice community is calculating the spectral function from the Euclidean correlator. We have approximated the spectral function and derived the mass and thermal width of particles through the time derivatives of the lattice correlator moments. We have focused on extracting the properties of bottomonium states, specifically $Υ$ and $χ_{b1}$. We will give an overview of the time-derivative moments approach and present results for the temperature dependence of the mass and width of both bottomonium states. The zero temperature results are consistent with experimental values, while results at higher temperatures are similar to those obtained using other methods.

Anisotropic excited bottomonia from a basis of smeared operators

Bottomonia play a crucial role in our understanding of the quark gluon plasma. We present lattice non-relativistic QCD calculations of bottomonia at temperatures in the range $T \in [47, 380]$ MeV using the Fastsum Generation 2L anisotropic $N_f = 2 + 1$ ensembles. The use of a basis of smeared operators allows the extraction of excited-state masses at zero temperature and an investigation of their thermal properties at non-zero temperature. We find that the ground state signal is substantially improved by this variational approach at finite temperature. We also apply the time-derivative moments approach to the projected or optimal correlation functions at finite temperature.

Thermal lattice QCD results from the FASTSUM collaboration

The FASTSUM Collaboration has developed a comprehensive research programme in thermal lattice QCD using 2+1 flavour ensembles. We review our recent hadron spectrum analyses of open charm mesons and charm baryons at non-zero temperature. We also detail our determination of the interquark potential in the bottomonium system using NRQCD quarks. All of our work uses anisotropic lattices where the temporal lattice spacing is considerably finer than the spatial one allowing better resolution of temporal correlation functions.

Phase Transitions in Particle Physics -- Results and Perspectives from Lattice Quantum Chromo-Dynamics

Phase transitions in a non-perturbative regime can be studied by ab initio Lattice Field Theory methods. The status and future research directions for LFT investigations of Quantum Chromo-Dynamics under extreme conditions are reviewed, including properties of hadrons and of the hypothesized QCD axion as inferred from QCD topology in different phases. We discuss phase transitions in strong interactions in an extended parameter space, and the possibility of model building for Dark Matter and Electro-Weak Symmetry Breaking. Methodological challenges are addressed as well, including new developments in Artificial Intelligence geared towards the identification of different phases and transitions.

Recent Results from the FASTSUM Collaboration

The FASTSUM Collaboration has developed a comprehensive research programme in thermal QCD using 2+1 flavour, anisotropic ensembles. In this talk, we summarise some of our recent results including thermal hadron spectrum calculations using our ``Generation 2L'' ensembles which have pion masses of 239(1) MeV. These include open charm mesons and charm baryons. We also summarise our work using the Backus Gilbert approach to determining the spectral function of the NRQCD bottomonium system. Finally, we review our determination of the interquark potential in the same system, but using our ``Generation 2'' ensembles which have heavier pion masses of 384(4) MeV.

Hadrons at high temperature: an update from the FASTSUM collaboration

We present the most recent results from the FASTSUM collaboration for hadron properties at high temperature. This includes the temperature dependence of the light and charmed meson and baryon spectrum, as well as properties of heavy quarkonia. The results are obtained using anisotropic lattices with a fixed scale approach. We also present the status of our next generation gauge ensembles.

Machine learning approaches to the QCD transition

We study the high temperature transition in pure $SU(3)$ gauge theory and in full QCD with 3D-convolutional neural networks trained as parts of either unsupervised or semi-supervised learning problems. Pure gauge configurations are obtained with the MILC public code and full QCD are from simulations of $N_f=2+1+1$ Wilson fermions at maximal twist. We discuss the capability of different approaches to identify different phases using as input the configurations of Polyakov loops. To better expose fluctuations, a standardized version of Polyakov loops is also considered.

Spectral reconstruction in NRQCD via the Backus-Gilbert method

We present progress results from the FASTSUM collaboration's programme to determine the spectrum of the bottomonium system as a function of temperature using a variety of approaches. In this contribution, the Backus Gilbert method is used to reconstruct spectral functions from NRQCD meson correlator data from FASTSUM's anisotropic ensembles at nonzero temperature. We focus in particular on the resolving power of the method, providing a demonstration of how the underlying resolution functions can be probed by exploiting the Laplacian nature of the NRQCD kernel. We conclude with estimates of the bottomonium ground state mass and widths at nonzero temperature.

Bottomonium spectral widths at nonzero temperature using maximum likelihood

We present progress results from the Fastsum collaboration's programme to determine the spectrum of the bottomonium system as a function of temperature using a variety of approaches. In these proceedings, the Maximum Likelihood approach is used with an Ansatz comprising of a Gaussian spectral function for the ground state. Fastsum anisotropic lattices with 2+1 dynamical quark flavours were used with temperatures ranging from 47 to 375 MeV.

Topology and axions in QCD

QCD axions are at the crossroads of QCD topology and Dark Matter searches. We present here the current status of topological studies on the lattice, and their implication on axion physics. We outline the specific challenges posed by lattice topology, the different proposals for handling them, the observable effects of topology on the QCD spectrum and its interrelation with chiral and axial symmetries. We review the transition to the Quark Gluon Plasma, the fate of topology at the transition, and the approach to the high temperature limit. We discuss the extrapolations needed to reach the regime of cosmological relevance, and the resulting constraints on the QCD axion.

Finite temperature QCD with $N_f=2+1+1$ Wilson twisted mass fermions at physical pion, strange and charm masses

We discuss recent progress in studying Quantum Chromodynamics at finite temperature using $N_f=2+1+1$ Wilson twisted mass fermions. Particular interest is in QCD symmetries and their breaking and restoration. First, we discuss the behaviour of the $η'$ meson at finite temperature, which is tightly connected to the axial and chiral symmetries. The results suggest a small decrease of the $η'$ mass in the pseudo-critical region coming close to the non-anomalous contribution and subsequent growth at large temperatures. Second, we present the first results of lattice simulations of Quantum Chromodynamics with $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass Wilson fermions at physical pion, strange and charm masses. We estimate the chiral pseudo-critical temperatures for different observables. Our preliminary results are consistent with a second order transition in the chiral limit, however other scenarios are not excluded.
