Breakdown of smooth solutions to the M\"uller-Israel-Stewart equations of relativistic viscous fluids

We consider equations of M\"uller-Israel-Stewart type describing a relativistic viscous fluid with bulk viscosity in four-dimensional Minkowski space. We show that there exists a class of smooth initial data that are localized perturbations of constant states for which the corresponding unique solutions to the Cauchy problem break down in finite time. Specifically, we prove that in finite time such solutions develop a singularity or become unphysical in a sense that we make precise. We also show that in general Riemann invariants do not exist in 1+1 dimensions for physically relevant equations of state and viscosity coefficients. Finally, we present a more general version of a result by Y. Guo and A.S. Tahvildar-Zadeh: we prove large-data singularity formation results for perfect fluids under very general assumptions on the equation of state, allowing any value for the fluid sound speed strictly less than the speed of light.

Nonlinear Constraints on Relativistic Fluids Far From Equilibrium

New constraints are found that must necessarily hold for Israel-Stewart-like theories of fluid dynamics to be causal far away from equilibrium. Conditions that are sufficient to ensure causality, local existence, and uniqueness of solutions in these theories are also presented. Our results hold in the full nonlinear regime, taking into account bulk and shear viscosities (at zero chemical potential), without any simplifying symmetry or near-equilibrium assumptions. Our findings provide fundamental constraints on the magnitude of viscous corrections in fluid dynamics far from equilibrium.

New Insights on One-Sided Lipschitz and Quadratically Inner-Bounded Nonlinear Dynamic Systems

Nonlinear dynamic systems can be classified into various classes depending on the modeled nonlinearity. These classes include Lipschitz, bounded Jacobian, one-sided Lipschitz (OSL), and quadratically inner-bounded (QIB). Such classes essentially yield bounding constants characterizing the nonlinearity. This is then used to design observers and controllers through Riccati equations or matrix inequalities. While analytical expressions for bounding constants of Lipschitz and bounded Jacobian nonlinearity are studied in the literature, OSL and QIB classes are not thoroughly analyzed---computationally or analytically. In short, this paper develops analytical expressions of OSL and QIB bounding constants. These expressions are posed as constrained maximization problems, which can be solved via various optimization algorithms. This paper also presents a novel insight particularly on QIB function set: any function that is QIB turns out to be also Lipschitz continuous.

Radiation reaction in higher-order electrodynamics

This paper considers the relativistic motion of charged particles coupled with electromagnetic fields in the higher-order theory proposed by Bopp, Land\'e--Thomas, and Podolsky. We rigorously derive a world-line integral expression for the self-force of the charged particle from a distributional equation for the conservation of four-momentum only. This naturally leads to an equation of motion for charged particles that incorporates a history-dependent self-interaction. We show additionally that the same equation of motion follows from a variational principle for retarded fields. The self-force coincides with an expression proposed by Zayats and Gratus--Perlick--Tucker on the basis of an averaging procedure.

Blowup with vorticity control for a 2D model of the Boussinesq equations

We propose a system of equations with nonlocal flux in two space dimensions which is closely modeled after the 2D Boussinesq equations in a hyperbolic flow scenario. Our equations involve a simplified vorticity stretching term and Biot-Savart law and provide insight into the underlying intrinsic mechanisms of singularity formation. We prove stable, controlled finite time blowup involving upper and lower bounds on the vorticity up to the time of blowup for a wide class of initial data.

Cusp formation for a nonlocal evolution equation

In this paper, we introduce a nonlocal evolution equation inspired by the C\'ordoba-C\'ordoba-Fontelos nonlocal transport equation. The C\'ordoba-C\'ordoba-Fontelos equation can be regarded as a model for the 2D surface quasigeostrophic equation or the Birkhoff-Rott equation. We prove blowup in finite time, and more importantly, investigate conditions under which the solution forms a cusp in finite time.

Gap localization of TE-Modes by arbitrarily weak defects

This paper considers the propagation of TE-modes in photonic crystal waveguides. The waveguide is created by introducing a linear defect into a periodic background medium. Both the periodic background problem and the perturbed problem are modelled by a divergence type equation. A feature of our analysis is that we allow discontinuities in the coefficients of the operator, which is required to model many photonic crystals. It is shown that arbitrarily weak perturbations introduce spectrum into the spectral gaps of the background operator.

No Local Double Exponential Gradient Growth in Hyperbolic Flow for the Euler equation

We consider smooth, double-odd solutions of the two-dimensional Euler equation in $[-1, 1)^2$ with periodic boundary conditions. It is tempting to think that the symmetry in the flow induces possible double-exponential growth in time of the vorticity gradient at the origin, in particular when conditions are such that the flow is "hyperbolic". This is because examples of solutions with $C^{1, \gamma}$-regularity were already constructed with exponential gradient growth by A. Zlatos. We analyze the flow in a small box around the origin in a strongly hyperbolic regime and prove that the compression of the fluid induced by the hyperbolic flow alone is not sufficient to create double-exponential growth of the gradient.

Absence of bound states for waveguides in 2D periodic structures

We study a Helmholtz-type spectral problem in a two-dimensional medium consisting of a fully periodic background structure and a perturbation in form of a line defect. The defect is aligned along one of the coordinate axes, periodic in that direction (with the same periodicity as the background), and bounded in the other direction. This setting models a so-called "soft-wall" waveguide problem. We show that there are no bound states, i.e., the spectrum of the operator under study contains no point spectrum.
