A Versatile Source of Single Photons for Quantum Information Processing

The quantum state of a single photon stands among the most fundamental and intriguing manifestations of quantum physics. At the same time single photons and pairs of single photons are important building blocks in the fields of linear optical based quantum computation and quantum repeater infrastructure. These fields possess enormous potential and much scientific and technological progress has been made in developing individual components, like quantum memories and photon sources using various physical implementations. However, further progress suffers from the lack of compatibility between these different components. Ultimately, one aims for a versatile source of single photons and photon pairs in order to overcome this hurdle of incompatibility. Such a photon source should allow for tuning of the spectral properties (wide wavelength range and narrow bandwidth) to address different implementations while retaining high efficiency. In addition, it should be able to bridge different wavelength regimes to make implementations compatible. Here we introduce and experimentally demonstrate such a versatile single photon and photon pair source based on the physics of whispering gallery resonators. A disk-shaped, monolithic and intrinsically stable resonator is made of lithium niobate and supports a cavity-assisted triply-resonant spontaneous parametric down-conversion process. Measurements show that photon pairs are efficiently generated in two highly tunable resonator modes. We verify wavelength tuning over 100 nm between both modes with a controllable bandwidth between 7.2 and 13 MHz. Heralding of single photons yields anti-bunching with $g^{(2)}(0) < 0.2$. This compact source provides unprecedented possibilities to couple to different physical quantum systems and renders it ideal for the implementation of quantum repeaters and optical quantum information processing.

Macroscopic Hong-Ou-Mandel interference

We report on a Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference experiment for quantum states with photon numbers per mode as large as 10^6 generated via high-gain parametric down conversion (PDC). The standard technique of coincidence counting leads in this case to a dip with a very low visibility. By measuring, instead of coincidence rate, the variance of the photon-number difference, we observe a peak with 99.99% visibility. From the shape of the peak, one can infer information about the temporal mode structure of the PDC radiation, including the degree of frequency/time entanglement.

Polarization-Entangled Light Pulses of 10^5 Photons

We experimentally demonstrate polarization entanglement for squeezed vacuum pulses containing more than 10^5 photons. We also study photon-number entanglement by calculating the Schmidt number and measuring its operational counterpart. Theoretically, our pulses are the more entangled the brighter they are. This promises important applications in quantum technologies, especially photonic quantum gates and quantum memories.

Measurement of two-mode squeezing with photon number resolving multi-pixel detectors

The measurement of the two-mode squeezed vacuum generated in an optical parametric amplifier (OPA) was performed with photon number resolving Multi-Pixel Photon Counters (MPPCs). Implementation of the MPPCs allows for the observation of noise reduction in a broad dynamic range of the OPA gain, which is inaccessible with standard single photon avalanche photodetectors.

Spectral properties of high-gain parametric down-conversion

High-gain parametric down-conversion (PDC) is a source of bright squeezed vacuum, which is a macroscopic nonclassical state of light and a promising candidate for quantum information applications. Here we study its properties, such as the intensity spectral width and the spectral width of pairwise correlations.

Macroscopic Bell States and the Higher-Order Degree of Polarization

We study polarization properties of the macroscopic analogues of two-photon Bell states. The effect of hidden polarization, i.e., polarization in the second (and higher) orders in the intensity is observed for the triplet states while the singlet one is demonstrated to be nearly unpolarized at least up to the fourth order. The arbitrary-order degree of polarization is introduced and applied to the macroscopic Bell states.

Accessing photon bunching with photon number resolving multi-pixel detector

In quantum optics and its applications, there is an urgent demand for photon-number resolving detectors. Recently, there appeared multi-pixel detectors (MPPC) that are able to distinguish between 1,2,..10 photons. At the same time, strong coupling between different pixels (cross-talk) hinders their photon-number resolution. In this work, we suggest a method for `filtering out' the cross-talk effect in the measurement of intensity correlation functions.

Macroscopic Pure State of Light Free of Polarization Noise

The preparation of completely non-polarized light is seemingly easy: an everyday example is sunlight. The task is much more difficult if light has to be in a pure quantum state, as required by most quantum-technology applications. The pure quantum states of light obtained so far are either polarized or, in rare cases, manifest hidden polarization: even if their intensities are invariant to polarization transformations, higher-order moments are not. We experimentally demonstrate the preparation of the macroscopic singlet Bell state, which is pure, completely non-polarized, and has no polarization noise. Simultaneous fluctuation suppression in three Stokes observables below the shot-noise limit is demonstrated, opening perspectives for noiseless polarization measurements. The state is shown to be invariant to polarization transformations. This robust highly entangled isotropic state promises to fuel important applications in photonic quantum technologies.

Two-Color Bright Squeezed Vacuum

In a strongly pumped non-degenerate traveling-wave OPA, we produce two-color squeezed vacuum with up to millions of photons per pulse. Our approach to registering this macroscopic quantum state is direct detection of a large number of transverse and longitudinal modes, which is achieved by making the detection time and area much larger than the coherence time and area, respectively. Using this approach, we obtain a record value of twin-beam squeezing for direct detection of bright squeezed vacuum. This makes direct detection of macroscopic squeezed vacuum a practical tool for quantum information applications.

Arbitrary-order lensless ghost imaging with thermal light

Arbitrary Nth-order ($N\geq2$) lensless ghost imaging with thermal light has been performed for the first time by only recording the intensities in two optical paths. It is shown that the image visibility can be dramatically enhanced as the order N increases. It is also found that longer integration times are required for higher-order correlation measurements as N increases, due to the increased fluctuations of higher-order intensity correlation functions.

Two-Photon Polarization Interference for Pulsed SPDC in a PPKTP Waveguide

We study the spectral properties of Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion in a periodically poled waveguided structure of KTP crystal pumped by ultra-short pulses. Our theoretical analysis reveals a strongly multimode and asymmetric structure of the two-photon spectral amplitude for type-II SPDC. Experimental evidence, based on Hong-Ou-Mandel polarization interference with narrowband filtering, confirms this result.

Tailoring polarization entanglement in anisotropy-compensated SPDC

We show that the angular spectrum of type-II SPDC contains a continuum of maximally entangled states. For the realization of a bright source of entangled two-photon states, a standard technique is to compensate for the transverse walk-off in the production crystal. We demonstrate that polarization entangled states can be effectively engineered by generalizing this approach. Our method allows to considerably enrich the set of generated entangled states with a controlled tailoring them.

Entangled Two-Photon Wave Packet in a Dispersive Medium

We report an experimental study of group-velocity dispersion effect on an entangled two-photon wavepacket, generated via spontaneous parametric down-conversion and propagating through a dispersive medium. Even in the case of using CW laser beam for pump, the biphoton wavepacket and the second-order correlation function spread significantly. The study and understanding of this phenomenon is of great importance for quantum information applications, such as quantum communication and distant clock synchronization.

Experimental Entanglement Concentration and Universal Bell-state Synthesizer

We report a novel Bell-state synthesizer in which an interferometric entanglement concentration scheme is used. An initially mixed polarization state from type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion becomes entangled after the interferometric entanglement concentrator. This Bell-state synthesizer is universal in the sense that the output polarization state is not affected by spectral filtering, crystal thickness, and, most importantly, the choice of pump source. It is also robust against environmental disturbance and a more general state, partially mixed$-$partially entangled state, can be readily generated as well.

Two-photon processes in faint biphoton fields

The goal of this research is to determine and study a physical system that will enable a fast and intrinsically two-photon detector, which would be of interest for quantum information and metrology applications. We consider two types of two-photon processes that can be observed using a very faint, but quantum-correlated biphoton field. These are optical up-conversion and an external photoelectric effect. We estimate the correlation enhancement factor for the biphoton light compared to coherent light, report and discuss the preliminary experimental results.

Interferometric Bell-state preparation using femtosecond-pulse-pumped Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion

We present theoretical and experimental study of preparing maximally entangled two-photon polarization states, or Bell states, using femtosecond pulse pumped spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC). First, we show how the inherent distinguishability in femtosecond pulse pumped type-II SPDC can be removed by using an interferometric technique without spectral and amplitude post-selection. We then analyze the recently introduced Bell state preparation scheme using type-I SPDC. Theoretically, both methods offer the same results, however, type-I SPDC provides experimentally superior methods of preparing Bell states in femtosecond pulse pumped SPDC. Such a pulsed source of highly entangled photon pairs is useful in quantum communications, quantum cryptography, quantum teleportation, etc.

Two-photon diffraction and quantum lithography

We report a proof-of-principle experimental demonstration of quantum lithography. Utilizing the entangled nature of a two-photon state, the experimental results have bettered the classical diffraction limit by a factor of two. This is a quantum mechanical two-photon phenomenon but not a violation of the uncertainty principle.

First-order interference of nonclassical light emitted spontaneously at different times

We study first-order interference in spontaneous parametric down-conversion generated by two pump pulses that do not overlap in time. The observed modulation in the angular distribution of the signal detector counting rate can only be explained in terms of a quantum mechanical description based on biphoton states. The condition for observing interference in the signal channel is shown to depend on the parameters of the idler radiation.
