Cosmological constraints of phantom dark energy models

We address three genuine phantom dark energy models where each of them induces the particular future events known as Big Rip, Little Rip and Little Sibling of the Big Rip. The background models are fully determined by a given dark energy equation of state. We first observationally constrain the corresponding model parameters that characterise each paradigm using the available data of supernova type Ia, Cosmic Microwave Background and Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations by using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. The obtained fits are used to solve numerically the first order cosmological perturbations. We compute the evolution of the density contrast of (dark) matter and DE, from the radiation dominated era till a totally DE dominated universe. Then, the obtained results are compared with respect to $Λ$CDM. We obtain the predicted current matter power spectrum and the evolution of $fσ_8$ given by the models studied in this work. Finally, the models are tested by computing the reduced $χ^2$ for the `Gold2017' $fσ_8$ dataset.

The classical and quantum fate of the Little Sibling of the Big Rip in $f(R)$ cosmology

The Little Sibling of the Big Rip is a cosmological abrupt event predicted by some phantom cosmological models that could describe our Universe. When this event is approached the observable Universe and its expansion rate grow infinitely, but its cosmic derivative remains finite. In this work we have obtained the group of metric $f(R)$ theories of gravity that reproduce this classical cosmological background evolution. Furthermore, we have considered the quantization of some of the resulting models in the framework of quantum geometrodynamics, showing that the DeWitt criterion can be satisfied. Therefore, as it also happens in General Relativity, this event may be avoided in $f(R)$ quantum cosmology.

An interacting holographic dark energy model within an induced gravity brane

In this paper, we present a model for the late-time evolution of the universe where a dark energy-dark matter interaction is invoked. Dark energy is modeled through an holographic Ricci dark energy component. The model is embedded within an induced gravity brane-world model. For suitable choices of the interaction coupling, the big rip and little rip induced by the holographic Ricci dark energy, in a relativistic model and in an induced gravity brane-world model, are removed. In this scenario, the holographic dark energy will have a phantom-like behaviour even though the brane is asymptotically de Sitter.

The interacting multiverse and its effect on the cosmic microwave background

We study a toy model of a multiverse consisting of canonically quantized universes that interact with each other on a quantum level based on a field-theoretical formulation of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. This interaction leads to the appearance of a pre-inflationary phase in the evolution of the individual universes. We analyze scalar perturbations within the model and calculate the influence of the pre-inflationary phase onto the power spectrum of these perturbations. The result is that there is a suppression of power on large scales, which can describe well the Planck 2018 data for the cosmic microwave background anisotropies and could thus indicate a possible solution to the observed quadrupole discrepancy.

Probing Palatini-type gravity theories through gravitational wave detections via quasinormal modes

The possibility of testing gravity theories with the help of gravitational wave detections has become an interesting arena of recent research. In this paper, we follow this direction by investigating the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of the axial perturbations for charged black holes in the Palatini-type theories of gravity, specifically ($i$) the Palatini $f(R)$ gravity coupled with Born-Infeld nonlinear electrodynamics and ($ii$) the Eddington-inspired-Born-Infeld gravity (EiBI) coupled with Maxwell electromagnetic fields. The coupled master equations describing perturbations of charged black holes in these theories are obtained with the tetrad formalism. By using the Wentzel-Kramers- Brillouin (WKB) method up to 6th order, we calculate the QNM frequencies of the EiBI charged black holes, the Einstein-Born-Infeld black holes, and the Born-Infeld charged black holes within the Palatini $R+αR^2$ gravity. The QNM spectra of these black holes would deviate from those of the Reissner-Nordström black hole. In addition, we study the QNMs in the eikonal limit and find that for the axial perturbations of the EiBI charged black holes, the link between the eikonal QNMs and the unstable null circular orbit around the black hole is violated.

Quantum cosmology of Eddington-Born-Infeld gravity fed by a scalar field: the big rip case

We study the quantum avoidance of the big rip singularity in the Eddington-inspired-Born-Infeld (EiBI) phantom model. Instead of considering a simple phantom dark energy component, which is described by a perfect fluid, we consider a more fundamental degree of freedom corresponding to a phantom scalar field with its corresponding potential, which would lead the classical universe to a big rip singularity. We apply a quantum geometrodynamical approach by performing an appropriate Hamiltonian study including an analysis of the constraints of the system. We then derive the Wheeler-DeWitt (WDW) equation and see whether the solutions to the WDW equation satisfy the DeWitt boundary condition. We find that by using a suitable Born-Oppenheimer (BO) approximation, whose validity is proven, the DeWitt condition is satisfied. Therefore, the big rip singularity is expected to be avoided in the quantum realm.

Regular Instantons in the Eddington-inspired-Born-Infeld Gravity: Lorentzian Wormholes from Bubble Nucleations

The O(4)-symmetric regular instanton solutions are studied within the framework of the Eddington-inspired-Born-Infeld gravity (EiBI). We find that the behavior of the solution would deviate from that in Einstein gravity when the kinetic energy of the scalar field is sufficiently large. The tunneling probability is calculated numerically in different parameter space. We find that the tunneling probability would increase with the Born-Infeld coupling constant, which is assumed to be positive in this paper. Furthermore, we discover a neck feature in the physical instanton solutions when the kinetic energy of the scalar field is sufficiently large. This feature can be interpreted as a Lorentzian time-like wormhole geometry formed during the bubble materialization.

On the Consistency of the Wheeler-DeWitt Equation in the Quantized Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld Gravity

We re-examine the quantum geometrodynamical approach within the Eddington-inspired-Born-Infeld theory of gravity, which was first proposed in our previous work [1]. A thorough analysis of the classical Hamiltonian with constraints is carried and the correctness and self-consistency of the modified Wheeler-DeWitt equation (WDW) is studied. We find that based on the newly obtained WDW equation derived with the use of the Dirac brackets, the conclusion reached in Ref.[1] can be corroborated. The big rip singularity present in the classical theory, and induced by a phantom perfect fluid, is expected to be avoided when quantum effects encoded on the modified WDW equation are taken into account.

More on the holographic Ricci dark energy model: smoothing Rips through interaction effects?

The background cosmological dynamics of the late Universe is analysed on the framework of a dark energy model described by an holographic Ricci dark energy component. Several kind of interactions between the dark energy and the dark matter components are considered herein. We solve the background cosmological dynamics for the different choices of interactions with the aim to analyse not only the current evolution of the universe but also its asymptotic behaviour and, in particular, possible future singularities removal. We show that in most of the cases, the Big Rip singularity, a finger print of this model in absence of an interaction between the dark sectors, is substituted by a de Sitter or a Minkowski state. Most importantly, we found two new {\textit{ future}} bouncing solutions leading to two possible asymptotic behaviours, we named Little Bang and Little Sibling of the Big Bang. At a Little Bang, as the size of the universe shrinks to zero in an infinite cosmic time, the Hubble rate and its cosmic time derivative blow up. In addition, at a Little sibling of the Big Bang, as the size of the universe shrinks to zero in an infinite cosmic time, the Hubble rate blows up but its cosmic time derivative is finite. These two abrupt events can happen as well in the past.

What if gravity becomes really repulsive in the future?

The current acceleration of the Universe is one of the most puzzling issues in theoretical physics nowadays. We are far from giving an answer on this letter to its true nature. Yet, with the observations we have at hand, we analyse the different patterns that the gravitational potential can show in the future. Surprisingly, gravity not only can get weaker in the near future, it can even become repulsive; or equivalently, the gravitational potential may become negative. We show this remark by using one of the simplest phenomenological model we can imagine for dark energy. We have as well reviewed the statefinder approach of these models. For completeness, we have also showed the behaviour of the density contrast of dark matter and dark energy for these simple (yet illustrative models). Our results are displayed at present and how they evolve in the future.

Pre-inflation from the multiverse: Can it solve the quadrupole problem in the cosmic microwave background?

We analyze a quantized toy model of a universe undergoing eternal inflation using a quantum-field-theoretical formulation of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. This so-called third quantization method leads to the picture that the eternally inflating universe is converted to a multiverse in which sub-universes are created and exhibit a distinctive phase in their evolution before reaching an asymptotic de Sitter phase. From the perspective of one of these sub-universes, we can thus analyze the pre-inflationary phase that arises naturally. Assuming that our observable universe is represented by one of those sub-universes, we calculate how this pre-inflationary phase influences the power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies and analyze whether it can explain the observed discrepancy of the power spectrum on large scales, i.e. the quadrupole issue in the CMB. While the answer to this question is negative in the specific model analyzed here, we point out a possible resolution of this issue.

Self-acceleration and matter content in bicosmology from Noether Symmetries

In bigravity, when taking into account the potential existence of matter fields minimally coupled to the second gravitation sector, the dynamics of our Universe depends on some matter that cannot be observed in a direct way. In this paper, we assume the existence of a Noether symmetry in bigravity cosmologies in order to constrain the dynamics of that matter. By imposing this assumption we obtain cosmological models with interesting phenomenology. In fact, considering that our universe is filled with standard matter and radiation, we show that the existence of a Noether symmetry implies that either the dynamics of the second sector decouples, being the model equivalent to General Relativity, or the cosmological evolution of our universe tends to a de Sitter state with the vacuum energy in it given by the conserved quantity associated with the symmetry. The physical consequences of the genuine bigravity models obtained are briefly discussed. We also point out that the first model, which is equivalent to General Relativity, may be favored due to the potential appearance of instabilities in the second model.

Quantum behavior of the "Little Sibling" of the Big Rip induced by a three-form field

A canonical quantization à la Wheeler-DeWitt is performed for a model of three-form fields in a homogeneous and isotropic universe. We start by carrying out the Hamiltonian formalism of this cosmological model. We then apply this formalism to a Little Sibling of the Big Rip (LSBR), an abrupt event milder than a Big Rip and that is known to be generic to several minimally coupled three-form fields for a variety of potentials. We obtain a set of analytical solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation using different analytical approximations and explore the physical consequences of them. It turns out that there are quantum states where the wave function of the universe vanishes, i.e. the DeWitt condition is fulfilled for them. Given that this happens only for some subset of solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, this points out that the matter inducing the LSBR is equally important in the process as, it has been previously shown, a minimally coupled phantom scalar field feeding classically a LSBR is smoothed at the quantum level, i.e. all the quantum states lead to a vanishing wave function.

Primordial Cosmology in Mimetic Born-Infeld Gravity

The Eddington-inspired-Born-Infeld (EiBI) model is reformulated within the mimetic approach. In the presence of a mimetic field, the model contains non-trivial vacuum solutions which could be free of spacetime singularity because of the Born-Infeld nature of the theory. We study a realistic primordial vacuum universe and prove the existence of regular solutions, such as primordial inflationary solutions of de Sitter type or bouncing solutions. Besides, the linear instabilities present in the EiBI model are found to be avoidable for some interesting bouncing solutions in which the physical metric as well as the auxiliary metric are regular at the background level.

Black hole solutions in mimetic Born-Infeld gravity

The vacuum, static, and spherically symmetric solutions in the mimetic Born-Infeld gravity are studied. The mimetic Born-Infeld gravity is a reformulation of the Eddington-inspired-Born-Infeld (EiBI) model under the mimetic approach. Due to the mimetic field, the theory contains non-trivial vacuum solutions different from those in Einstein gravity. We find that with the existence of the mimetic field, the spacelike singularity inside a Schwarzschild black hole could be altered to a lightlike singularity, even though the curvature invariants still diverge at the singularity. Furthermore, in this case, the maximal proper time for a timelike radially-infalling observer to reach the singularity is found to be infinite.

What if? - Exploring the Multiverse through Euclidean wormholes

We present Euclidean wormhole solutions describing possible bridges within the multiverse. The study is carried out in the framework of the third quantization. The matter content is modelled through a scalar field which supports the existence of a whole collection of universes. The instanton solutions describe Euclidean solutions that connect baby universes with asymptotically de Sitter universes. We compute the tunnelling probability of these processes. Considering the current bounds on the energy scale of inflation and assuming that all the baby universes are nucleated with the same probability, we draw some conclusions about what are the universes more likely to tunnel and therefore undergo a standard inflationary era.

Doomsdays in a modified theory of gravity: A classical and a quantum approach

By far cosmology is one of the most exciting subject to study, even more so with the current bulk of observations we have at hand. These observations might indicate different kinds of doomsdays, if dark energy follows certain patterns. Two of these doomsdays are the Little Rip (LR) and Little Sibling of the Big Rip (LSBR). In this work, aside from proving the unavoidability of the LR and LSBR in the Eddington-inspired-Born-Infeld (EiBI) scenario, we carry out a quantum analysis of the EiBI theory with a matter field, which, from a classical point of view would inevitably lead to a universe that ends with either LR or LSBR. Based on a modified Wheeler-DeWitt equation, we demonstrate that such fatal endings seems to be avoidable.

Phantom Dark Ghost in Einstein-Cartan Gravity

A class of dynamical dark energy models is constructed through an extended version of fermion fields corresponding to phantom dark ghost spinors, which are spin one half with mass dimension one. We find that if these spinors interact with torsion fields in a homogeneous and isotropic universe, then it does not imply any future dark energy singularity or any abrupt event, though the fermion has a negative kinetic energy. In fact, the equation of state of this dark energy model will asymptotically approach the value $w=-1$ from above without crossing the phantom divide and inducing therefore a de Sitter state. Consequently, we expect the model to be stable because no real phantom fields will be created. At late time, the torsion fields will vanish as the corresponding phantom dark ghost spinors dilute. As would be expected, intuitively, this result is unaffected by the presence of cold dark matter although the proof is not as straightforward as in general relativity.
