The spectrum of gravitational waves in an f(R) model with a bounce

We present an inflationary model preceded by a bounce in a metric $f(R)$ theory. In this model, modified gravity affects only the early stages of the universe. We analyse the predicted spectrum of the gravitational waves in this scenario using the method of the Bogoliubov coefficients. We show that there are distinctive (oscillatory) signals on the spectrum for very low frequencies; i.e., corresponding to modes that are currently entering the horizon.

The holographic Ricci dark energy and its possible doomsdays

It is well known that the holographic Ricci dark energy can induce some future doomsdays in the evolution of the universe. Here we analyse the possible avoidance of those doomsdays by invoking a modification to general relativity on the form of curvature effects.

Scalar perturbations from brane-world inflation with curvature effects

We consider a generalization of the Randall-Sundrum single brane-world scenario (RS2). More precisely, the generalization is described through curvature corrections, corresponding to a Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk and a Hilbert-Einstein term, as well as the strength of the induced gravity term, on the brane. We are mainly interested in analyzing the early inflationary era of the brane, which we model within the extreme slow-roll limit, i.e., under a de Sitter like brane inflation, where the inflaton field is confined on the brane. We compute the scalar perturbations in this model and compare our results with those previously obtained for the RS2 scenario with and without an induced gravity term on the brane or a Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk. The amplitude of the scalar perturbations is decreased as compared with a pure RS2 model. In addition, the effect from the Gauss-Bonnet correction in an induced gravity brane-world model is to decrease the amplitude of the scalar perturbations, and a similar result is obtained for the induced gravity effect in a Gauss-Bonnet brane-world. In general, in the high energy limit the amplitude is highly suppressed by the Gauss-Bonnet effect. Finally, we constrain the model using the latest WMAP7 data.

Constraints on single entity driven inflationary and radition eras

We present a model that attempts to fuse the inflationary era and the subsequent radiation dominated era under a unified framework so as to provide a smooth transition between the two. The model is based on a modification of the generalized Chaplygin gas. We constrain the model observationally by mapping the primordial power spectrum of the scalar perturbations to the latest data of WMAP7. We compute as well the spectrum of the primordial gravitational waves as would be measured today.

The holographic induced gravity model with a Ricci dark energy: smoothing the little rip and big rip through Gauss-Bonnet effects?

We present an holographic brane-world model of the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) scenario with and without a Gauss-Bonnet term (GB) in the bulk. We show that an holographic dark energy component with the Ricci scale as the infra-red cutoff can describe the late-time acceleration of the universe. In addition, we show that the dimensionless holographic parameter is very important in characterising the DGP branches, and in determining the behaviour of the Ricci dark energy as well as the asymptotic behaviour of the brane. On the one hand, in the DGP scenario the Ricci dark energy will exhibit a phantom-like behaviour with no big rip if the holographic parameter is strictly larger than 1/2. For smaller values, the brane hits a big rip or a little rip. On the other hand, we have shown that the introduction of the GB term avoids the big rip and little rip singularities on both branches but cannot avoid the appearance of a big freeze singularity for some values of the holographic parameter on the normal branch, however, these values are very unlikely because they lead to a very negative equation of state at the present and therefore we can speak in practice of singularity avoidance. At this regard, the equation of state parameter of the Ricci dark energy plays a crucial role, even more important than the GB parameter, in rejecting the parameter space where future singularities appear.

The cosmology of an holographic induced gravity model with curvature effects

We present an holographic model of the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati scenario with a Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk. We concentrate on the solution that generalises the normal Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati branch. It is well known that this branch cannot describe the late-time acceleration of the universe even with the inclusion of a Gauss-Bonnet term. Here, we show that this branch in the presence of a Gauss-Bonnet curvature effect and an holographic dark energy with the Hubble scale as the infra-red cutoff can describe the late-time acceleration of the universe. It is worthwhile to stress that such an energy density component cannot do the same job on the normal Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati branch (without Gauss-Bonnet modifications) nor in a standard 4-dimensional relativistic model. The acceleration on the brane is also presented as being induced through an effective dark energy which corresponds to a balance between the holographic one and geometrical effects encoded through the Hubble parameter.

Cosmological Imprints of a Generalized Chaplygin Gas Model for the Early Universe

We propose a phenomenological model for the early universe where there is a smooth transition between an early "quintessence" phase and a radiation dominated era. The matter content is modelled by an appropriately modified Chaplygin gas for the early universe. We constrain the model observationally by mapping the primordial power spectrum of the scalar perturbations to the latest data of WMAP7. We compute as well the spectrum of the primordial gravitational waves as would be measured today. We show that the high frequencies region of the spectrum depends on the free parameter of the model and most importantly this region of the spectrum can be within the reach of future gravitational waves detectors.

k-essence in the DGP brane-world cosmology

We analyse a DGP brane filled with a k-essence field and assume the k-field evolving linearly with the cosmic time of the brane. We then solve analytically the Friedmann equation and deduce the different behaviour of the brane at the low and the high energy regimes. The asymptotic behaviour can be quite different involving accelerating branes, big bangs, big crunches, big rips or quiescent singularities. The latter correspond to a type of sudden singularity.

Cosmography of f(R) - brane cosmology

Cosmography is a useful tool to constrain cosmological models, in particular dark energy models. In the case of modified theories of gravity, where the equations of motion are generally quite complicated, cosmography can contribute to select realistic models without imposing arbitrary choices a priori. Indeed, its reliability is based on the assumptions that the universe is homogeneous and isotropic on large scale and luminosity distance can be "tracked" by the derivative series of the scale factor a(t). We apply this approach to induced gravity brane-world models where an f(R)-term is present in the brane effective action. The virtue of the model is to self-accelerate the normal and healthy DGP branch once the f(R)-term deviates from the Hilbert-Einstein action. We show that the model, coming from a fundamental theory, is consistent with the LCDM scenario at low redshift. We finally estimate the cosmographic parameters fitting the Union2 Type Ia Supernovae (SNeIa) dataset and the distance priors from Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and then provide constraints on the present day values of f(R) and its second and third derivatives.

Black holes die hard: can one spin-up a black hole past extremality?

A possible process to destroy a black hole consists on throwing point particles with sufficiently large angular momentum into the black hole. In the case of Kerr black holes, it was shown by Wald that particles with dangerously large angular momentum are simply not captured by the hole, and thus the event horizon is not destroyed. Here we reconsider this gedanken experiment for a variety of black hole geometries, from black holes in higher dimensions to black rings. We show that this particular way of destroying a black hole does not succeed and that Cosmic Censorship is preserved.

Stochastic gravitational waves from a new type of modified Chaplygin gas

We propose a new scenario for the early universe where there is a smooth transition between an early de Sitter-like phase and a radiation dominated era. In this model, the matter content is modelled by a new type of generalised Chaplygin gas for the early universe, with an underlying scalar field description. We study the gravitational waves generated by the quantum fluctuations. In particular, we calculate the gravitational wave power spectrum, as it would be measured today, following the method of the Bogoliubov coefficients. We show that the high frequencies region of the spectrum depends strongly on one of the parameters of the model. On the other hand, we use the number of e-folds, along with the power spectra and spectral index of the scalar perturbations, to constrain the model observationally.

The big freeze is a singularity that shows up in some dark energy models. We address here its possible avoidance in quantum cosmology, more precisely in the framework of quantum geometrodynamics.

Appeasing the Phantom Menace?

An induced gravity brane-world model is considered herein. A Gauss-Bonnet term is provided for the bulk, whereas phantom matter is present on the brane. It is shown that a combination of infra-red and ultra-violet modifications to general relativity replaces a big rip singularity: A sudden singularity emerges instead. Using current observational data, we also determine a range of values for the cosmic time corresponding to the sudden singularity occurrence.

f(R) brane cosmology

Despite the nice features of the Dvali, Gabadadze and Porrati (DGP) model to explain the late-time acceleration of the universe, it suffers from some theoretical problems like the ghost issue. We present a way to self-accelerate the normal DGP branch, which is known to be free of the ghost problem, by means of an f(R) term on the brane action. We obtain the de Sitter self-accelerating solutions of the model and study their stability under homogeneous perturbations.

Self-accelerating the normal DGP branch

We propose a generalised induced gravity brane-world model where the brane action contains an arbitrary f(R) term, R being the scalar curvature of the brane. We show that the effect of the f(R)term on the dynamics of a homogeneous and isotropic brane is twofold: (i) an evolving induced gravity parameter and (ii) a shift on the energy density of the brane. This new shift term, which is absent on the Dvali, Gabadadze and Porrati (DGP) model, plays a crucial role to self-accelerate the generalised normal DGP branch of our model. We analyse as well the stability of de Sitter self-accelerating solutions under homogeneous perturbations and compare our results with the standard 4-dimensional one. Finally, we obtain power law solutions which either correspond to conventional acceleration or super-acceleration of the brane. In the latter case, no phantom matter is invoked on the brane nor in the bulk.

On the quantum fate of singularities in a dark-energy dominated universe

Classical models for dark energy can exhibit a variety of singularities, many of which occur for scale factors much bigger than the Planck length. We address here the issue whether some of these singularities, the big freeze and the big demarrage, can be avoided in quantum cosmology. We use the framework of quantum geometrodynamics. We restrict our attention to a class of models whose matter content can be described by a generalized Chaplygin gas and be represented by a scalar field with an appropriate potential. Employing the DeWitt criterium that the wave function be zero at the classical singularity, we show that a class of solutions to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation fulfilling this condition can be found. These solutions thus avoid the classical singularity. We discuss the reasons for the remaining ambiguity in fixing the solution.
