Color-Kinematics Duality and the Double Copy in Curved Spacetimes

The double copy relates gravitational data to gauge-theory data, most sharply through color-kinematics duality for flat-space scattering amplitudes. This review surveys the extent to which this idea can be formulated beyond asymptotically flat backgrounds. After recalling the flat-space ingredients needed for comparison, we describe curved-space constructions for boundary correlators and scattering observables in AdS, dS, and other non-trivial backgrounds. We then review classical and field-level maps, including Kerr--Schild, Weyl, Cotton, twistor, and convolutional double copies. A separate part is devoted to self-dual sectors. Throughout, we emphasize both the common structures that survive from flat space and the obstructions introduced by curvature.

4d CFT Correlators from Ambitwistors

We develop an ambitwistor-space formulation of conserved spinning correlators in four-dimensional CFTs. We show that conformal symmetry and conservation are trivialised by the ambitwistor Penrose transform, and construct the two- and three-point ambitwistor correlators explicitly. We further propose a simple formula for projecting onto parity-even and parity-odd sectors, and verify it in several non-trivial examples. The resulting correlators furnish a natural basis compatible with a boundary double copy for arbitrary spin. At three points, we show that they localise on degree-three curves in a two-twistor representation. We also explain how the formalism incorporates boundary propagators for unitary operators of integer conformal dimension, and extend it to conformally coupled scalars.

Hidden Zeros in Massive Theories

We investigate whether the hidden zeros and associated factorisations found for massless colour-ordered amplitudes persist under massive deformations. Using the kinematic mesh construction, we show that hidden zeros survive only for symmetry controlled mass generation. For massive $\text{Tr} Φ^3$ with a uniform mass, the zeros and their factorisation patterns are inherited after a massive shift of planar variables, and an analogous statement holds for Kaluza-Klein reductions where the relevant non-planar variables are modified by conserved mode numbers. For the non-linear sigma model (NLSM), a naive pion mass term generically spoils hidden zeros, while a spurion induced potential restores them. This allows factorisation near zeros, including odd point channels described by an appropriately mass deformed NLSM + $ϕ^3$ theory, and leads to a hidden zero based on-shell recursion for massive NLSM amplitudes. For spin-one, a simple massive Yang-Mills theory fails to exhibit hidden zeros, while spontaneously broken gauge theories preserve them.

Spinning Boundary Correlators from (A)dS$_4$ Twistors

We develop a twistor-space framework to compute boundary correlators via a boundary limit of nested Penrose transforms in (A)dS$_4$. Starting from correlators of (anti-)self-dual bulk fields, the boundary limit reproduces the correlators of the dual conserved currents; we demonstrate this explicitly for two- and three-point functions. The two-point correlator is rendered finite by working in Euclidean signature. At three points, we obtain compact rational twistor-space representatives obeying a double-copy relation, thereby clarifying the twistor-space origin of the results in Baumann et al. 2024. We further extend the analysis to non-conserved currents with integer conformal dimension, dual to massive bulk fields, as well as to the free scalar.

Visions in Quantum Gravity

To deepen our understanding of Quantum Gravity and its connections with black holes and cosmology, building a common language and exchanging ideas across different approaches is crucial. The Nordita Program "Quantum Gravity: from gravitational effective field theories to ultraviolet complete approaches" created a platform for extensive discussions, aimed at pinpointing both common grounds and sources of disagreements, with the hope of generating ideas and driving progress in the field. This contribution summarizes the twelve topical discussions held during the program and collects individual thoughts of speakers and panelists on the future of the field in light of these discussions.

Causality Bounds on the Primordial Power Spectrum

Effective field theories (EFTs) parametrize our ignorance of the underlying UV theory through their Wilson coefficients. However, not all values of these coefficients are consistent with fundamental physical principles. In this paper, we explore the consequences of imposing causal propagation on the comoving curvature perturbation in the EFT of inflation, particularly its impact on the primordial power spectrum and the effective sound speed $c_s^\text{eff}$. We investigate scenarios where $c_s^\text{eff}$ undergoes a transition, remaining consistent with CMB constraints at early times but later experiencing a drastic change, becoming highly subluminal. Such scenarios allow the primordial power spectrum to grow at small scales, potentially leading to the formation of primordial black holes or the generation of scalar-induced gravitational waves. We find the generic feature that in a causal theory, luminal sound speeds imply a free theory, effectively constraining the dynamics. Additionally, we obtain that when considering natural values for the Wilson coefficients, maintaining the validity of the EFT and the weakly coupled regime, and enforcing causal propagation of the EFT modes, the power spectrum cannot increase drastically. This imposes significant constraints on the parameter space of models aiming to produce such features.

Double Copy in AdS3 from Minitwistor Space

The double copy relates gravitational theories to the square of gauge theories. While it is well understood in flat backgrounds, its precise realisation around curved spacetimes remains an open question. In this paper, we construct a classical double copy for cohomology class representatives in the minitwistor space of hyperbolic spacetimes. We find that the realisation of a physical double copy requires that the masses of the different spinning fields are not equal, contrary to the flat space prescription. This leads to a position-space double copy for bulk-to-boundary propagators. We also show that in coordinate space, this implies the Cotton double copy for waves and warped black holes of Topologically Massive Gravity. We show that these are exact double copy relations by constructing their Kerr-Schild metrics and also analysing the Kerr-Schild double copy. Furthermore, we find that near the boundary the double copy relates the dual CFT currents.

Self-Dual Cosmology

We construct cosmological spacetimes with a self-dual Weyl tensor whose dynamics are described by conformally coupled scalars with only cubic self-interactions. Similar to the previously discovered cases in flat and (Anti) de Sitter backgrounds, the interactions are characterized by a bracket that encodes a kinematic algebra. We discuss how the color-kinematics duality and double copy are realized in these cosmological backgrounds. If we further impose that the Ricci scalar is that of an FLRW spacetime, we find two new self-dual metrics corresponding to radiation-dominated and coasting (non-accelerating) FLRW backgrounds. Relaxing this requirement, we find an infinite family of solutions given by three different conformal classes of cosmological self-dual metrics. These solutions approximate those of FLRW as long as we impose a simple additional constraint on the scalar theory.

Bounds on EFT's in an expanding Universe

We find bounds on the Wilson coefficients of effective field theories (EFTs) living in a Universe undergoing expansion by requiring that its modes do not propagate further than a minimally coupled photon by a resolvable amount. To do so, we compute the spatial shift suffered by the EFT modes at a fixed time slice within the WKB approximation and the regime of validity of the EFT. We analyze the bounds arising on shift-symmetric scalars and curved space generalizations of Galileons.

Positivity-causality competition: a road to ultimate EFT consistency constraints

Effective field theories (EFT) are strongly constrained by fundamental principles such as unitarity, locality, causality, and Lorentz invariance. In this paper, we consider the EFT of photons (or other $U(1)$ gauge field) and compare different approaches to obtain bounds on its Wilson coefficients. We present an analytic derivation of the implications of unitarity (linear and non-linear positivity bounds) and compare these constraints with the requirement of causal propagation of the photon modes around non-trivial backgrounds generated by external sources. We find that the low energy causality condition can give complementary constraints to the positivity bounds. Applying both constraints together can significantly reduce the allowed region of the photon EFT parameters.

Neutrino-Assisted Early Dark Energy is a Natural Resolution of the Hubble Tension

It has very recently been claimed that the neutrino-assisted early dark energy model -- a promising resolution of the Hubble tension that can ameliorate the theoretical fine-tuning and coincidence problems that plague other theories -- does not provide natural or cosmologically interesting results. In this short paper, we show that these conclusions are incorrect for three reasons. First, we identify errors in the calculations. Second, we dispute the definition in of what constitutes an 'interesting' and 'natural' model. Finally, we demonstrate that the conclusions of were arrived at without fully exploring the full parameter space of the model. Neutrino-assisted early dark energy remains a natural and interesting potential resolution of the Hubble tension that merits further study.

Mini-twistors and the Cotton Double Copy

The double copy relates quantities in gauge, gravity and related theories. A well-known procedure for relating exact classical solutions is the Weyl double copy in four spacetime dimensions, and a three-dimensional analogue of this -- the Cotton double copy -- has recently been found for topologically massive gauge theory and gravity. In this paper, we use twistor methods to provide a derivation of the position-space Cotton double copy, where this is seen to arise from combining appropriate data in so-called minitwistor space. Our methods rely on a massive generalisation of the Penrose transform linking spacetime fields with cohomology classes in minitwistor space. We identify the relevant transform from the twistor literature, but also show that it naturally arises from considering scattering amplitudes in momentum space. We show that the Cotton double copy in position space is only valid for type N solutions, but that a simple twistor space double copy is possible for non-type N solutions, where we use anyons to illustrate our arguments.

Double Copy for Massive Scalar Field Theories

We explore extensions of the double copy to massive theories and find a new cubic theory with a local double copy. We consider the nonlinear sigma model and the special galileon theory, massless versions of which are known to be related through the double copy. We show that by performing a Kaluza-Klein reduction of these theories from five dimensions down to four, a double copy relation exists between the resulting massive four-dimensional scalar field theories. This requires the vanishing contribution of new galileon terms arising in high dimensions. We further explore if other interactions that do not arise from a dimensional reduction of the nonlinear sigma model could be double copied and find a new cubic interaction which satisfies the BCJ relations up to 5-point amplitudes.

Massive Double Copy in the High-Energy Limit

The exploration of the massive double copy is still in its infancy, and only a few examples in limited contexts are known. In this paper, we analyze the newly discovered double copy for topologically massive theories beyond tree-level amplitudes in the high-energy (eikonal) limit. We find that contrary to the simple double copy relation that occurs in the massless $d\geq4$ case, the massive double copy requires information outside the eikonal limit to give correct results. However, a simple double copy relation arises for the phase shift. Additionally, we relate the eikonal amplitudes to the corresponding shockwave backgrounds and find a classical double copy relation that is manifest only for the appropriate choice of boundary conditions. This analysis hints towards the existence of a topologically massive double copy at all loop orders.

Phase Transitions in de Sitter: Quantum Corrections

We investigate the decay rate of a false vacuum state in de Sitter space at high Hubble rates, using two methods: the Hawking-Moss instanton method which is fully quantum mechanical but relies on the saddle-point approximation, and the Starobinsky-Yokoyama stochastic approach which is non-perturbative but does not include quantum effects. We use the flux-over-population method to compute the Hawking-Moss decay rate at one-loop order, and demonstrate that in its domain of validity, it is reproduced by the stochastic calculation using the one-loop constraint effective potential. This suggests that the stochastic approach together with the constraint effective potential can be used to accurately describe vacuum decay beyond the saddle-point approximation.

Cotton Double Copy for Gravitational Waves

We construct a double copy relation between the Cotton spinor and the dual field strength spinor of topologically massive theories, as the three-dimensional analogue of the Weyl double copy. The relationship holds in curved backgrounds for wave solutions. We give an explicit proof for Type N spacetimes and show examples satisfying the Cotton double copy.

Cosmology and Signals of Light Pseudo-Dirac Dark Matter

In this paper, we analyze the cosmological evolution, allowed parameter space, and observational prospects for a dark sector consisting of thermally produced pseudo-Dirac fermions with a small mass splitting, coupled to the Standard Model through a dark photon. This scenario is particularly notable in the context of sub-GeV dark matter, where the mass-off-diagonal leading interaction limits applicability of both CMB energy injection constraints and standard direct detection searches. We present the first general study of the thermal history of pseudo-Dirac DM with splittings from 100 eV to MeV, focusing on the depletion of the heavier "excited" state abundance via scatterings and decays, and on the distinctive signals arising from its small surviving abundance. We analyze CMB energy injection bounds on both DM annihilation and decay, accelerator-based probes, and new line-like direct-detection signals from the excited DM down-scattering on either nuclei or electrons, as well as future search prospects in each channel. We also comment on the relevance of this signal to the few-keV Xenon1T electron excess and on possible diurnal modulation of this signal, and introduce a signal-strength parametrization to facilitate the comparison of future experimental results to theoretical expectations.

Massive Double Copy in Three Spacetime Dimensions

Recent explorations on how to construct a double copy of massive gauge fields have shown that, while any amplitude can be written in a form consistent with colour-kinematics duality, the double copy is generically unphysical. In this paper, we explore a new direction in which we can obtain a sensible double copy of massive gauge fields due to the special kinematics in three-dimensional spacetimes. To avoid the appearance of spurious poles at 5-points, we only require that the scattering amplitudes satisfy one BCJ relation. We show that the amplitudes of Topologically Massive Yang-Mills satisfy this relation and that their double copy at three, four, and five-points is Topologically Massive Gravity.
