Scattering perspective on gravitational lensing

Gravitational waves propagating across gravitational potentials undergo lensing effects that, in the wave-optics regime, manifest as frequency-dependent amplitude and phase modulations. In this work, we revisit the diffraction integral formalism of gravitational lensing and demonstrate that it admits a natural and transparent interpretation within the framework of scattering theory. We establish a direct correspondence between the lensing amplification factor and the scattering amplitude of waves propagating in curved spacetime, clarifying how familiar lensing limits map onto distinct scattering regimes. In particular, we show that the diffraction integral matches exactly the eikonal limit of the scattering amplitude at lowest post-Minkowskian order, after a change in coordinates and the inclusion of finite-distance effects. We further extend the standard formalism by including subleading corrections to the post-Minkowskian and eikonal approximations. Our results provide a unified theoretical framework for the interpretation of lensed gravitational-wave signals and open the way to more accurate waveform modeling for future lensed observations.

Causal Effective Field Theories

Physical principles such as unitarity, causality, and locality can constrain the space of consistent effective field theories (EFTs) by imposing two-sided bounds on the allowed values of Wilson coefficients. In this paper, we consider the bounds that arise from the requirement of low-energy causality alone, without appealing to any assumptions about UV physics. We focus on shift-symmetric theories, and consider bounds that arise from the propagation around both a homogeneous and a spherically-symmetric background. We find that low-energy causality, namely the requirement that there are no resolvable time advances within the regime of validity of the EFT, produces two-sided bounds in agreement with compact positivity constraints previously obtained from $2 \rightarrow 2$ scattering amplitude dispersion relations using full crossing symmetry.

An Effective Field Theory for Binary Cosmic Strings

We extend the effective field theory (EFT) formalism for gravitational radiation from a binary system of compact objects to the case of extended objects. In particular, we study the EFT for a binary system consisting of two infinitely-long cosmic strings with small velocity and small spatial substructure, or "wiggles". The complexity of the system requires the introduction of two perturbative expansion parameters, constructed from the velocity and size of the wiggles, in contrast with the point particle case, for which a single parameter is sufficient. This further requires us to assign new power counting rules in the system. We integrate out the modes corresponding to potential gravitons, yielding an effective action for the radiation gravitons. We show that this action describes a changing quadrupole, sourced by the bending modes of the string, which in turn generates gravitational waves. We study the ultraviolet divergences in this description, and use them to obtain the classical renormalization group flow of the string tension in such a setting.

Field Theories and Fluids for an Interacting Dark Sector

We consider the relationship between fluid models of an interacting dark sector, and the field theoretical models that underlie such descriptions. This question is particularly important in light of suggestions that such interactions may help alleviate a number of current tensions between different cosmological datasets. We construct consistent field theory models for an interacting dark sector that behave exactly like the coupled fluid ones, even at the level of linear perturbations, and can be trusted deep in the nonlinear regime. As a specific example, we focus on the case of a Dirac, Born-Infeld (DBI) field conformally coupled to a quintessence field. We show that the fluid linear regime breaks before the field gradients become large; this means that the field theory is valid inside a large region of the fluid nonlinear regime.

The WKB approximation and tunneling in theories with non-canonical kinetic terms

Tunneling is a fascinating aspect of quantum mechanics that renders the local minima of a potential meta-stable, with important consequences for particle physics, for the early hot stage of the universe, and more speculatively, for the behavior of the putative multiverse. While this phenomenon has been studied extensively for systems which have canonical kinetic terms, many theories of fundamental physics contain fields with non-canonical kinetic structures. It is therefore desirable to have a detailed framework for calculating tunneling rates and initial states after tunneling for these theories. In this work, we present such a rigorous formulation and illustrate its use by applying it to a number of examples.
