Nonlinear Subharmonic Dynamics of Spectrally Stable Lugiato-Lefever Periodic Waves

We study the nonlinear dynamics of perturbed, spectrally stable $T$-periodic stationary solutions of the Lugiato-Lefever equation (LLE), a damped nonlinear Schrödinger equation with forcing that arises in nonlinear optics. It is known that for each $N\in\mathbb{N}$, such a $T$-periodic wave train is (orbitally) asymptotically stable against $NT$-periodic, i.e. subharmonic, perturbations. Unfortunately, in such results both the allowable size of initial perturbations as well as the exponential decay rates of perturbations depend on $N$ and, in fact, tend to zero as $N\to\infty$, leading to a lack of uniformity in the period of the perturbation. In recent work, the authors performed a delicate decomposition of the associated linearized solution operator and obtained linear estimates which are uniform in $N$. The dynamical description suggested by this uniform linear theory indicates that the corresponding nonlinear iteration can only be closed if one allows for a spatio-temporal phase modulation of the underlying wave. However, such a modulated perturbation is readily seen to satisfy a quasilinear equation, yielding an inherent loss of regularity. We regain regularity by transferring a nonlinear damping estimate, which has recently been obtained for the LLE in the case of localized perturbations to the case of subharmonic perturbations. Thus, we obtain a nonlinear, subharmonic stability result for periodic stationary solutions of the LLE that is uniform in $N$. This in turn yields an improved nonuniform subharmonic stability result providing an $N$-independent ball of initial perturbations which eventually exhibit exponential decay at an $N$-dependent rate. Finally, we argue that our results connect in the limit $N \to \infty$ to previously established stability results against localized perturbations, thereby unifying existing theories.

Transverse dynamics of two-dimensional traveling periodic gravity-capillary water waves

We study the transverse dynamics of two-dimensional traveling periodic waves for the gravity--capillary water-wave problem. The governing equations are the Euler equations for the irrotational flow of an inviscid fluid layer with free surface under the forces of gravity and surface tension. We focus on two open sets of dimensionless parameters $(α,β)$, where $α$ and $β$ are the inverse square of the Froude number and the Weber number, respectively. For each arbitrary but fixed pair $(α,β)$ in one of these sets, two-dimensional traveling periodic waves bifurcate from the trivial constant flow. In one open set we find a one-parameter family of periodic waves, whereas in the other open set we find two geometrically distinct one-parameter families of periodic waves. Starting from a transverse spatial dynamics formulation of the governing equations, we investigate the transverse linear instability of these periodic waves and the induced dimension-breaking bifurcation. The two results share a common analysis of the purely imaginary spectrum of the linearization at a periodic wave. We apply a simple general criterion for the transverse linear instability problem and a Lyapunov center theorem for the dimension-breaking bifurcation. For parameters $(α,β)$ in the open set where there is only one family of periodic waves, we prove that these waves are linearly transversely unstable. For the other open set, we show that the waves with larger wavenumber are transversely linearly unstable. We also identify an open subset of parameters for which both families of periodic waves are tranversely linearly unstable. For each of these transversely linearly unstable periodic waves, a dimension-breaking bifurcation occurs in which three-dimensional doubly periodic waves bifurcate from the two-dimensional periodic wave.

Nonlinear Modulational Dynamics of Spectrally Stable Lugiato-Lefever Periodic Waves

We consider the nonlinear stability of spectrally stable periodic waves in the Lugiato-Lefever equation (LLE), a damped nonlinear Schrödinger equation with forcing that arises in nonlinear optics. So far, nonlinear stability of such solutions has only been established against co-periodic perturbations by exploiting the existence of a spectral gap. In this paper, we consider perturbations which are localized, i.e., integrable on the line. Such localized perturbations naturally yield the absence of a spectral gap, so we must rely on a substantially different method with origins in the stability analysis of periodic waves in reaction-diffusion systems. The relevant linear estimates have been obtained in recent work by the first three authors through a delicate decomposition of the associated linearized solution operator. Since its most critical part just decays diffusively, the nonlinear iteration can only be closed if one allows for a spatio-temporal phase modulation. However, the modulated perturbation satisfies a quasilinear equation yielding an apparent loss of regularity. To overcome this obstacle, we incorporate tame estimates on the unmodulated perturbation, which satisfies a semilinear equation in which no derivatives are lost, yet where decay is too slow to close an independent iteration scheme. We obtain nonlinear stability of periodic steady waves in the LLE against localized perturbations with precisely the same decay rates as predicted by the linear theory.

Linear instability of breathers for the focusing nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation

Relying upon tools from the theory of integrable systems, we discuss the linear instability of the Kuznetsov-Ma breathers and the Akhmediev breathers of the focusing nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation. We use the Darboux transformation to construct simultaneously the breathers and the exact solutions of the Lax system associated with the breathers. We obtain a full description of the Lax spectra for the two breathers, including multiplicities of eigenvalues. Solutions of the linearized NLS equations are then obtained from the eigenfunctions and generalized eigenfunctions of the Lax system. While we do not attempt to prove completeness of eigenfunctions, we aim to determine the entire set of solutions of the linearized NLS equations generated by the Lax system in appropriate function spaces.

Heteroclinic orbits for a system of amplitude equations for orthogonal domain walls

Using a variational method, we prove the existence of heteroclinic solutions for a 6dimensional system of ordinary differential equations. We derive this system from the classical B{é}nard-Rayleigh problem near the convective instability threshold. The constructed heteroclinic solutions provide first order approximations for domain walls between two orthogonal convective rolls.

Linear Modulational and Subharmonic Dynamics of Spectrally Stable Lugiato-Lefever Periodic Waves

We study the linear dynamics of spectrally stable $T$-periodic stationary solutions of the Lugiato-Lefever equation (LLE), a damped nonlinear Schrödinger equation with forcing that arises in nonlinear optics. Such $T$-periodic solutions are nonlinearly stable to $NT$-periodic, i.e. subharmonic, perturbations for each $N\in\mathbb{N}$ with exponential decay rates of perturbations of the form $e^{-δ_N t}$. However, both the exponential rates of decay $δ_N$ and the allowable size of the initial perturbations tend to $0$ as $N\to\infty$, so that this result is non-uniform in $N$ and, in fact, empty in the limit $N=\infty$. The primary goal of this paper is to introduce a methodology, in the context of the LLE, by which a uniform stability result for subharmonic perturbations may be achieved, at least at the linear level. The obtained uniform decay rates are shown to agree precisely with the polynomial decay rates of localized, i.e. integrable on the real line, perturbations of such spectrally stable periodic solutions of the LLE. This work both unifies and expands on several existing works in the literature concerning the stability and dynamics of such waves, and sets forth a general methodology for studying such problems in other contexts.

Transverse instability of periodic and generalized solitary waves for a fifth-order KP model

We consider a fifth-order Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation which arises as a two-dimensional model in the classical water-wave problem. This equation possesses a family of generalized line solitary waves which decay exponentially to periodic waves at infinity. We prove that these solitary waves are transversely spectrally unstable and that this instability is induced by the transverse instability of the periodic tails. We rely upon a detailed spectral analysis of some suitably chosen linear operators.

Counting unstable eigenvalues in Hamiltonian spectral problems via commuting operators

We present a general counting result for the unstable eigenvalues of linear operators of the form $JL$ in which $J$ and $L$ are skew- and self-adjoint operators, respectively. Assuming that there exists a self-adjoint operator $K$ such that the operators $JL$ and $JK$ commute, we prove that the number of unstable eigenvalues of $JL$ is bounded by the number of nonpositive eigenvalues of~$K$. As an application, we discuss the transverse stability of one-dimensional periodic traveling waves in the classical KP-II (Kadomtsev--Petviashvili) equation. We show that these one-dimensional periodic waves are transversely spectrally stable with respect to general two-dimensional bounded perturbations, including periodic and localized perturbations in either the longitudinal or the transverse direction, and that they are transversely linearly stable with respect to doubly periodic perturbations.

Transverse spectral stability of small periodic traveling waves for the KP equation

The Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation possesses a four-parameter family of one-dimensional periodic traveling waves. We study the spectral stability of the waves with small amplitude with respect to two-dimensional perturbations which are either periodic in the direction of propagation, with the same period as the one-dimensional traveling wave, or non-periodic (localized or bounded). We focus on the so-called KP-I equation (positive dispersion case), for which we show that these periodic waves are unstable with respect to both types of perturbations. Finally, we briefly discuss the KP-II equation, for which we show that these periodic waves are spectrally stable with respect to perturbations which are periodic in the direction of propagation, and have long wavelengths in the transverse direction.

Stability of small periodic waves for the nonlinear Schroedinger equation

The nonlinear Schroedinger equation possesses three distinct six-parameter families of complex-valued quasi-periodic travelling waves, one in the defocusing case and two in the focusing case. All these solutions have the property that their modulus is a periodic function of x-ct for some real c. In this paper we investigate the stability of the small amplitude travelling waves, both in the defocusing and the focusing case. Our first result shows that these waves are orbitally stable within the class of solutions which have the same period and the same Floquet exponent as the original wave. Next, we consider general bounded perturbations and focus on spectral stability. We show that the small amplitude travelling waves are stable in the defocusing case, but unstable in the focusing case. The instability is of side-band type, and therefore cannot be detected in the periodic set-up used for the analysis of orbital stability.

Orbital stability of periodic waves for the nonlinear Schroedinger equation

The nonlinear Schroedinger equation has several families of quasi-periodic travelling waves, each of which can be parametrized up to symmetries by two real numbers: the period of the modulus of the wave profile, and the variation of its phase over a period (Floquet exponent). In the defocusing case, we show that these travelling waves are orbitally stable within the class of solutions having the same period and the same Floquet exponent. This generalizes a previous work where only small amplitude solutions were considered. A similar result is obtained in the focusing case, under a non-degeneracy condition which can be checked numerically. The proof relies on the general approach to orbital stability as developed by Grillakis, Shatah, and Strauss, and requires a detailed analysis of the Hamiltonian system satisfied by the wave profile.
