Hamiltonian analysis of fermions coupled to the Holst action

We report three manifestly Lorentz-invariant Hamiltonian formulations of minimally and nonminimally coupled fermion fields to the Holst action. These formulations are achieved by making a suitable parametrization of both the tetrad and the Lorentz connection, which allows us to integrate out some auxiliary fields without spoiling the local Lorentz symmetry. They have the peculiarity that their noncanonical symplectic structures as well as the phase-space variables for the gravitational sector are real. Moreover, two of these Hamiltonian formulations involve half-densitized fermion fields. We also impose the time gauge on these formulations, which leads to real connections for the gravitational configuration variables. Finally, we perform a symplectomorphism in one of the manifestly Lorentz-invariant Hamiltonian formulations and analyze the resulting formulation, which becomes the Hamiltonian formulation of fermion fields minimally coupled to the Palatini action for particular values of the coupling parameters.

Straightforward Hamiltonian analysis of $BF$ gravity in $n$ dimensions

We perform, in a manifestly $SO(n-1,1)$ [$SO(n)$] covariant fashion, the Hamiltonian analysis of general relativity in $n$ dimensions written as a constrained $BF$ theory. We solve the constraint on the $B$ field in a way naturally adapted to the foliation of the spacetime that avoids explicitly the introduction of the vielbein. This leads to a form of the action involving a presymplectic structure, which is reduced by doing a suitable parametrization of the connection and then, after integrating out some auxiliary fields, the Hamiltonian form involving only first-class constraints is obtained.

Off-shell Noether currents and potentials for first-order general relativity

We report off-shell Noether currents obtained from off-shell Noether potentials for first-order general relativity described by $n$-dimensional Palatini and Holst Lagrangians including the cosmological constant. These off-shell currents and potentials are achieved by using the corresponding Lagrangian and the off-shell Noether identities satisfied by diffeomorphisms generated by arbitrary vector fields, local $SO(n)$ or $SO(n-1,1)$ transformations, `improved diffeomorphisms', and the `generalization of local translations' of the orthonormal frame and the connection. A remarkable aspect of our approach is that we do {\it not} use Noether's theorem in its direct form. By construction, the currents are off-shell conserved and lead naturally to the definition of off-shell Noether charges. We also study what we call the `half off-shell' case for both Palatini and Holst Lagrangians. In particular, we find that the resulting diffeomorphism and local $SO(3,1)$ or $SO(4)$ off-shell Noether currents and potentials for the Holst Lagrangian generically depend on the Immirzi parameter, which holds even in the `half off-shell' and on-shell cases. We also study Killing vector fields in the `half off-shell' and on-shell cases. The current theoretical framework is illustrated for the `half off-shell' case in static spherically symmetric and Friedmann--Lemaitre--Robertson--Walker spacetimes in four dimensions.

Canonical analysis of $BF$ gravity in $n$ dimensions

In this paper we perform in a manifestly $SO(n-1,1)$ [or, alternatively $SO(n)$] covariant fashion, the canonical analysis of general relativity in $n$ dimensions written as a constrained $BF$ theory. Since the Lagrangian action of the theory can be written in two classically equivalent ways, we analyze each case separately. We show that for either action the canonical analysis can be accomplished without introducing second-class constraints during the whole process. Furthermore, in each case the resulting Hamiltonian formulation is the same as the canonical formulation with only first-class constraints recently obtained in M. Montesinos, R. Escobedo, J. Romero, and M. Celada, Phys. Rev. D 101, 024042 (2020) from the $n$-dimensional Palatini action.

Canonical analysis with no second-class constraints of $BF$ gravity with Immirzi parameter

In this paper we revisit the canonical analysis of $BF$ gravity with the Immirzi parameter and a cosmological constant. By examining the constraint on the $B$ field, we realize that the analysis can be performed in a Lorentz-covariant fashion while utterly avoiding the introduction of second-class constraints during the whole process. Finally, we make contact with the description of the phase space of first-order general relativity in terms of canonical variables with manifest Lorentz covariance subject to first-class constraints only recently introduced.

Canonical analysis of Holst action without second-class constraints

We perform the canonical analysis of the Holst action for general relativity with a cosmological constant without introducing second-class constraints. Our approach consists in identifying the dynamical and nondynamical parts of the involved variables from the very outset. After integrating out the nondynamical variables associated with the connection, we obtain the description of phase space in terms of manifestly $SO(3,1)$ [or $SO(4)$, depending on the signature] covariant canonical variables and first-class constraints only. We impose the time gauge on them and show that the Ashtekar-Barbero formulation of general relativity emerges. Later, we discuss a family of canonical transformations that allows us to construct new $SO(3,1)$ [or $SO(4)$] covariant canonical variables for the phase space of the theory and compare them with the ones already reported in the literature, pointing out the presence of a set of canonical variables not considered before. Finally, we resort to the time gauge again and find that the theory, when written in terms of the new canonical variables, either collapses to the $SO(3)$ ADM formalism or to the Ashtekar-Barbero formalism with a rescaled Immirzi parameter.

Canonical analysis of $n$-dimensional Palatini action without second-class constraints

We carry out the canonical analysis of the $n$-dimensional Palatini action with or without a cosmological constant $(n\geq3)$ introducing neither second-class constraints nor resorting to any gauge fixing. This is accomplished by providing an expression for the spatial components of the connection that allows us to isolate the nondynamical variables present among them, which can later be eliminated from the action by using their own equation of motion. As a result, we obtain the description of the phase space of general relativity in terms of manifestly $SO(n-1,1)$ [or $SO(n)$] covariant variables subject to first-class constraints only, with no second-class constraints arising during the process. Afterwards, we perform, at the covariant level, a canonical transformation to a set of variables in terms of which the above constraints take a simpler form. Finally, we impose the time gauge and make contact with the $SO(n-1)$ ADM formalism.

Revisiting the solution of the second-class constraints of the Holst action

In this paper we revisit the nonmanifestly Lorentz-covariant canonical analysis of the Holst action with a cosmological constant. We take a viewpoint close to that of F. Cianfrani and G. Montani [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 091301 (2009)] and realize that the solution of the second-class constraints that the authors provide is incomplete, thus not accounting for the correct local dynamics of general relativity. We then mend their approach by adding the missing degrees of freedom to the solution and give a complete description of the resulting theory, which preserves Lorentz invariance but turns out to be endowed with a noncanonical symplectic structure. Later on and without resorting to any gauge condition, we perform a Darboux transformation to bring this theory into a canonical form. Finally, we show that in the time gauge both formulations, namely the noncanonical and the canonical ones, lead to the Ashtekar-Barbero variables.

$SU(1,1)$ Barbero-like variables derived from Holst action

We work on a spacetime manifold foliated by timelike leaves. In this setting, we explore the solution of the second-class constraints arising during the canonical analysis of the Holst action with a cosmological constant. The solution is given in a manifestly Lorentz-covariant fashion, and the resulting canonical formulation is expressed using several sets of real variables that are related to one another by canonical transformations. By applying a gauge fixing to this formulation, we obtain a description of gravity as an $SU(1,1)$ gauge theory that resembles the Ashtekar-Barbero formulation.

The gauge symmetries of first-order general relativity with matter fields

In $n$-dimensional spacetimes ($n>3$), there exists an internal gauge symmetry of the Palatini action with a cosmological constant that is the natural generalization of the so-called "local translations" of three-dimensional general relativity. We report the extension of this symmetry to include the minimal coupling of Yang-Mills and fermion fields to the Palatini action with a cosmological constant. We show that, as in the case of three-dimensional local translations, the extended symmetry depends on the energy-momentum tensor of the corresponding matter field and, for fermions, it contains an additional term that in four dimensions is proportional to the axial fermion current. We also report the extension of the analog of this internal gauge symmetry for the Holst action with a cosmological constant by incorporating minimally coupled scalar and Yang-Mills fields, as well as a non-minimally coupled fermion field. In the last case, the extended symmetry is affected by both the Immirzi parameter and the energy-momentum tensor and, for fermions, it also depends on the axial fermion current.

Polynomial $BF$-type action for general relativity and anti-self-dual gravity

We report a gravitational $BF$-type action principle propagating two (complex) degrees of freedom that, besides the gauge connection and the $B$ field, only employs an additional Lagrange multiplier. The action depends on two parameters and remarkably is polynomial in the $B$ field. For a particular choice of the involved parameters the action provides an alternative description of (complex) general relativity with a nonvanishing cosmological constant, whereas another choice corresponds to anti-self-dual gravity. Generic values of the parameters produce "close neighbors" of general relativity, although there is a peculiar choice of the parameters that leads to a Hamiltonian theory with two scalar constraints. Given the nontrivial form of the resulting scalar constraint for these models, we consider a more general setting where the scalar constraint is replaced with an arbitrary analytic function of some fundamental variables and show that the Poisson algebra involving this constraint together with the Gauss and vector constraints of the Ashtekar formalism closes, thus generating an infinite family of gravitational models that propagate the same number of degrees of freedom as general relativity.

Manifestly Lorentz-covariant variables for the phase space of general relativity

We present a manifestly Lorentz-covariant description of the phase space of general relativity with the Immirzi parameter. This formulation emerges after solving the second-class constraints arising in the canonical analysis of the Holst action. We show that the new canonical variables give rise to other Lorentz-covariant parametrizations of the phase space via canonical transformations. The resulting form of the first-class constraints in terms of new variables is given. In the time gauge, these variables and the constraints become those found by Barbero.

Reformulation of the symmetries of first-order general relativity

We report a new internal gauge symmetry of the n-dimensional Palatini action with cosmological term (n>3) that is the generalization of three-dimensional local translations. This symmetry is obtained through the direct application of the converse of Noether's second theorem on the theory under consideration. We show that diffeomorphisms can be expressed as linear combinations of it and local Lorentz transformations with field-dependent parameters up to terms involving the variational derivatives of the action. As a result, the new internal symmetry together with local Lorentz transformations can be adopted as the fundamental gauge symmetries of general relativity. Although their gauge algebra is open in general, it allows us to recover, without resorting to the equations of motion, the very well-known Lie algebra satisfied by translations and Lorentz transformations in three dimensions. We also report the analog of the new gauge symmetry for the Holst action with cosmological term, finding that it explicitly depends on the Immirzi parameter. The same result concerning its relation to diffeomorphisms and the open character of the gauge algebra also hold in this case. Finally, we consider the non-minimal coupling of a scalar field to gravity in n dimensions and establish that the new gauge symmetry is affected by this matter field. Our results indicate that general relativity in dimension greater than three can be thought of as a gauge theory.

$BF$ gravity

$BF$ gravity comprises all the formulations of gravity that are based on deformations of $BF$ theory. Such deformations consist of either constraints or potential terms added to the topological $BF$ action that turn some of the gauge degrees of freedom into physical ones, particularly giving rise to general relativity. The $BF$ formulations have provided new and deep insights into many classical and quantum aspects of the gravitational field, setting the foundations for the approach to quantum gravity known as spinfoam models. In this review, we present a self-contained and unified treatment of the $BF$ formulations of $D$-dimensional general relativity and other related models, focusing on the classical aspects of them and including some new results.

Plebanski-like action for general relativity and anti-self-dual gravity

We present a new $BF$-type action for complex general relativity with or without a cosmological constant resembling Plebanski's action, which depends on an SO(3,$\mathbb{C}$) connection, a set of 2-forms, a symmetric matrix, and a 4-form. However, it differs from the Plebanski formulation in the way that the symmetric matrix enters into the action. The advantage of this fact is twofold. First, as compared to Plebanski's action, the symmetric matrix can now be integrated out, which leads to a pure $BF$-type action principle for general relativity; the canonical analysis of the new action then shows that it has the same phase space of the Ashtekar formalism up to a canonical transformation induced by a topological term. Second, a particular choice of the parameters involved in the formulation produces a $BF$-type action principle describing conformally anti-self-dual gravity. Therefore, the new action unifies both general relativity and anti-self-dual gravity.

Barbero's formulation from a $BF$-type action with the Immirzi parameter

Starting from a constrained real $BF$-type action for general relativity that includes both the Immirzi parameter and the cosmological constant, we obtain the Ashtekar-Barbero variables used in the canonical approach to the quantization of the gravitational field. This is accomplished by explicitly solving the second-class constraints resulting from the Hamiltonian analysis of the considered action, and later imposing the time gauge. All throughout this work the tetrad formalism is left aside, obtaining the Ashtekar-Barbero variables entirely in terms of the $B$-fields that define the action.

Alternative derivation of Krasnov's action for general relativity

Starting from Plebanski's action for general relativity with cosmological constant, we show that by integrating out all the auxiliary fields Krasnov's action immediately emerges. We also perform the Hamiltonian analysis of the latter and show that the constraints are those of the Ashtekar formalism.

Lorentz-covariant Hamiltonian analysis of BF gravity with the Immirzi parameter

We perform the Lorentz-covariant Hamiltonian analysis of two Lagrangian action principles that describe general relativity as a constrained BF theory and that include the Immirzi parameter. The relation between these two Lagrangian actions has been already studied through a map among the fields involved. The main difference between these is the way the Immirzi parameter is included, since in one of them the Immirzi parameter is included explicitly in the BF terms, whereas in the other (the CMPR action) it is in the constraint on the B fields. In this work we continue the analysis of their relationship but at the Hamiltonian level. Particularly, we are interested in seeing how the above difference appears in the constraint structure of both action principles. We find that they both possess the same number of first-class and second-class constraints and satisfy a very similar (off-shell) Poisson-bracket algebra on account of the type of canonical variables employed. The two algebras can be transformed into each other by making a suitable change of variables
