Boundary bilinear control of semilinear parabolic PDEs: quadratic convergence of the SQP method

We analyze a bilinear control problem governed by a semilinear parabolic equation. The control variable is the Robin coefficient on the boundary. First-order necessary and second-order sufficient optimality conditions are derived. A sequential quadratic programming algorithm is then proposed to compute local solutions. Starting the iterations from an initial point in an $L^2$-neighborhood of the local solution we prove stability and quadratic convergence of the algorithm in $L^p$ ($p < \infty$) and $L^\infty$ assuming that the local solution satisfies a no-gap second-order sufficient optimality condition and a strict complementarity condition.

Dirichlet control problems with energy regularization governed by non-coercive elliptic equations

The present study investigates a linear-quadratic Dirichlet control problem governed by a non-coercive elliptic equation posed on a possibly non-convex polygonal domain. Tikhonov regularization is carried out in an energy seminorm. The regularity of the solutions is established in appropriate weighted Sobolev spaces, and the finite element discretization of the problem is analyzed. In order to recover the optimal rate of convergence in polygonal non-convex domains, graded meshes are required. In addressing this particular problem, it is also necessary to introduce a discrete projection in the sense of $H^{1/2}(Γ)$ to deal with the non-homogeneous boundary condition. A thorough examination of the approximation properties of the discrete controls reveals that the discrete problems are strongly convex uniformly with respect to the discretization parameter. All these ingredients lead to optimal error estimates. Practical computational considerations and numerical examples are discussed at the end of the paper.

Analysis of a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin scheme for the tangential control of the Stokes system

We consider an unconstrained tangential Dirichlet boundary control problem for the Stokes equations with an $ L^2 $ penalty on the boundary control. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we obtain well-posedness and regularity results for the tangential Dirichlet control problem on a convex polygonal domain. The analysis contains new features not found in similar Dirichlet control problems for the Poisson equation; an interesting result is that the optimal control has higher local regularity on the individual edges of the domain compared to the global regularity on the entire boundary. Second, we propose and analyze a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method to approximate the solution. For convex polygonal domains, our theoretical convergence rate for the control is optimal with respect to the global regularity on the entire boundary. We present numerical experiments to demonstrate the performance of the HDG method.

Quadratic convergence of an SQP method for some optimization problems with applications to control theory

We analyze a sequential quadratic programming algorithm for solving a class of abstract optimization problems. Assuming that the initial point is in an $L^2$ neighborhood of a local solution that satisfies no-gap second-order sufficient optimality conditions and a strict complementarity condition, we obtain stability and quadratic convergence in $L^q$ for all $q\in[p,\infty]$ where $p\geq 2$ depends on the problem. Many of the usual optimal control problems of partial differential equations fit into this abstract formulation. Some examples are given in the paper. Finally, a computational comparison with other versions of the SQP method is presented.

Error estimates for the discretization of bilinear control problems governed by semilinear elliptic PDEs

This paper studies an optimal control problem governed by a semilinear elliptic equation, in which the control acts in a multiplicative or bilinear way as the reaction coefficient of the equation. We focus on the numerical discretization of the problem. The discretization is carried out by using the finite element method, with piecewise constant functions for the control and continuous piecewise linear functions for the state and the adjoint state. We first prove convergence of the solutions of the discrete problems to solutions of the continuous problem. We also demonstrate that strict local solutions of the continuous problem can be approximated by local solutions of the discrete problems. Next we obtain an error estimate of order $O(h)$ for the difference between continuous and discrete locally optimal controls. To obtain this result we assume no-gap second order sufficient optimality conditions. As it is usual in this kind of discretization, a superconvergence phenomenon of order $O(h^2)$ is observed in numerical experiments for the error estimates of the state and adjoint state. The last part of the paper is dedicated to explain this behaviour. A numerical experiment confirming these results is included.

Non-coercive Neumann boundary control problems

The article examines a linear-quadratic Neumann control problem that is governed by a non-coercive elliptic equation. Due to the non-self-adjoint nature of the linear control-to-state operator, it is necessary to independently study both the state and adjoint state equations. The article establishes the existence and uniqueness of solutions for both equations, with minimal assumptions made about the problem's data. Next, the regularity of these solutions is studied in three frameworks: Hilbert-Sobolev spaces, Sobolev-Slobodecki\uı spaces, and weighted Sobolev spaces. These regularity results enable a numerical analysis of the finite element approximation of both the state and adjoint state equations. The results cover both convex and non-convex domains and quasi-uniform and graded meshes. Finally, the optimal control problem is analyzed and discretized. Existence and uniqueness of the solution, first-order optimality conditions, and error estimates for the finite element approximation of the control are obtained. Numerical experiments confirming these results are included. A significant highlight is that the discretization error estimates known from the literature, are improved even for the coercive case.

Bilinear control of semilinear elliptic PDEs: Convergence of a semismooth Newton method

In this paper, we carry out the analysis of the semismooth Newton method for bilinear control problems related to semilinear elliptic PDEs. We prove existence, uniqueness and regularity for the solution of the state equation, as well as differentiability properties of the control to state mapping. Then, first and second order optimality conditions are obtained. Finally, we prove the superlinear convergence of the semismooth Newton method to local solutions satisfying no-gap second order sufficient optimality conditions as well as a strict complementarity condition.

Semismooth Newton Method for Boundary Bilinear Control

We study a control-constrained optimal control problem governed by a semilinear elliptic equation. The control acts in a bilinear way on the boundary, and can be interpreted as a heat transfer coefficient. A detailed study of the state equation is performed and differentiability properties of the control-to-state mapping are shown. First and second order optimality conditions are derived. Our main result is the proof of superlinear convergence of the semismooth Newton method to local solutions satisfying no-gap second order sufficient optimality conditions as well as a strict complementarity condition.

A New Global Divergence Free and Pressure-Robust HDG Method for Tangential Boundary Control of Stokes Equations

In [ESAIM: M2AN, 54(2020), 2229-2264], we proposed an HDG method to approximate the solution of a tangential boundary control problem for the Stokes equations and obtained an optimal convergence rate for the optimal control {that reflects its global regularity}. However, the error estimates depend on the pressure, and the velocity is not divergence free. The importance of pressure-robust numerical methods for fluids was addressed by John et al. [SIAM Review, 59(2017), 492-544]. In this work, we devise a new HDG method to approximate the solution of the Stokes tangential boundary control problem; the HDG method is also of independent interest for solving the Stokes equations. This scheme yields a $\mathbf{H}(\mathrm{div})$ conforming, globally divergence free, and pressure-robust solution. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time such a numerical scheme has been obtained for an optimal boundary control problem for the Stokes equations. We also provide numerical experiments to show the performance of the new HDG method and the advantage over the non pressure-robust scheme.

Critical cones for sufficient second order conditions in PDE constrained optimization

In this paper, we analyze optimal control problems governed by semilinear parabolic equations. Box constraints for the controls are imposed and the cost functional involves the state and possibly a sparsity-promoting term, but not a Tikhonov regularization term. Unlike finite dimensional optimization or control problems involving Tikhonov regularization, second order sufficient optimality conditions for the control problems we deal with must be imposed in a cone larger than the one used to obtain necessary conditions. Different extensions of this cone have been proposed in the literature for different kinds of minima: strong or weak minimizers for optimal control problems. After a discussion on these extensions, we propose a new extended cone smaller than those considered until now. We prove that a second order condition based on this new cone is sufficient for a strong local minimum.

Analysis of control problems of nonmontone semilinear elliptic equations

In this paper we study optimal control problems governed by a semilinear elliptic equation. The equation is nonmonotone due to the presence of a convection term, despite the monotonocity of the nonlinear term. The resulting operator is neither monotone nor coervive. However, by using conveniently a comparison principle we prove existence and uniqueness of solution for the state equation. In addition, we prove some regularity of the solution and differentiability of the relation control-to-state. This allows us to derive first and second order conditions for local optimality.

Optimal time delays in a class of reaction-diffusion equations

A class of semilinear parabolic reaction diffusion equations with multiple time delays is considered. These time delays and corresponding weights are to be optimized such that the associated solution of the delay equation is the best approximation of a desired state function. The differentiability of the mapping is proved that associates the solution of the delay equation to the vector of weights and delays. Based on an adjoint calculus, first-order necessary optimality conditions are derived. Numerical test examples show the applicability of the concept of optimizing time delays.

Measure Control of a Semilinear Parabolic Equation with a Nonlocal Time Delay

We study a control problem governed by a semilinear parabolic equation. The control is a measure that acts as the kernel of a possibly nonlocal time delay term and the functional includes a non-differentiable term with the measure-norm of the control. Existence, uniqueness and regularity of the solution of the state equation, as well as differentiability properties of the control-to-state operator are obtained. Next, we provide first order optimality conditions for local solutions. Finally, the control space is suitably discretized and we prove convergence of the solutions of the discrete problems to the solutions of the original problem. Several numerical examples are included to illustrate the theoretical results.

A New HDG Method for Dirichlet Boundary Control of Convection Diffusion PDEs I: High Regularity

We propose a new hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method to approximate the solution of a Dirichlet boundary control problem governed by an elliptic convection diffusion PDE. Even without a convection term, Dirichlet boundary control problems are well-known to be very challenging theoretically and numerically. Although there are many works in the literature on Dirichlet boundary control problems for the Poisson equation, the authors are not aware of any existing theoretical or numerical analysis works for convection diffusion Dirichlet control problems. We make two contributions. First, we obtain well-posedness and regularity results for the Dirichlet control problem. Second, under certain assumptions on the domain and the target state, we obtain optimal a priori error estimates in 2D for the control for the new HDG method. As far as the authors are aware, there are no existing comparable results in the literature. We present numerical experiments to demonstrate the performance of the HDG method.

A New HDG Method for Dirichlet Boundary Control of Convection Diffusion PDEs II: Low Regularity

In the first part of this work, we analyzed a Dirichlet boundary control problem for an elliptic convection diffusion PDE and proposed a new hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method to approximate the solution. For the case of a 2D polygonal domain, we also proved an optimal superlinear convergence rate for the control under certain assumptions on the domain and on the target state. In this work, we revisit the convergence analysis without these assumptions; in this case, the solution can have low regularity and we use a different analysis approach. We again prove an optimal convergence rate for the control, and present numerical results to illustrate the convergence theory.

Error estimates for Dirichlet control problems in polygonal domains

The paper deals with finite element approximations of elliptic Dirichlet boundary control problems posed on two-dimensional polygonal domains. Error estimates are derived for the approximation of the control and the state variables. Special features of unconstrained and control constrained problems as well as general quasi-uniform meshes and superconvergence meshes are carefully elaborated. Compared to existing results, the convergence rates for the control variable are not only improved but also fully explain the observed orders of convergence in the literature. Moreover, for the first time, results in non-convex domains are provided.

Optimization Methods for Dirichlet Control Problems

We discuss several optimization procedures to solve finite element approximations of linear-quadratic Dirichlet optimal control problems governed by an elliptic partial differential equation posed on a 2D or 3D Lipschitz domain. The control is discretized explicitely using continuous piecewise linear approximations. Unconstrained, control-constrained, state-constrained and control-and-state constrained problems are analyzed. A preconditioned conjugate method for a reduced problem in the control variable is proposed to solve the unconstrained problem, whereas semismooth Newton methods are discussed for the solution of constrained problems. State constraints are treated via a Moreau-Yosida penalization. Convergence is studied for both the continuous problems and the finite dimensional approximations. In the finite dimensional case, we are able to show convergence of the optimization procedures even in the absence of Tikhonov regularization parameter. Computational aspects are also treated and several numerical examples are included to illustrate the theoretical results.
