Suppressing Electroweak Precision Observables in 5D Warped Models

We elaborate on a recently proposed mechanism to suppress large contributions to the electroweak precision observables in five dimensional (5D) warped models, without the need for an extended 5D gauge sector. The main ingredient is a modification of the AdS metric in the vicinity of the infrared (IR) brane corresponding to a strong deviation from conformality in the IR of the 4D holographic dual. We compute the general low energy effective theory of the 5D warped Standard Model, emphasizing additional IR contributions to the wave function renormalization of the light Higgs mode. We also derive expressions for the S and T parameters as a function of a generic 5D metric and zero-mode wave functions. We give an approximate formula for the mass of the radion that works even for strong deviation from the AdS background. We proceed to work out the details of an explicit model and derive bounds for the first KK masses of the various bulk fields. The radion is the lightest new particle although its mass is already at about 1/3 of the mass of the lightest resonances, the KK states of the gauge bosons. We examine carefully various issues that can arise for extreme choices of parameters such as the possible reintroduction of the hierarchy problem, the onset of nonperturbative physics due to strong IR curvature or the creation of new hierarchies near the Planck scale. We conclude that a KK scale of 1 TeV is compatible with all these constraints.

Warped 5D Standard Model Consistent with EWPT

For a 5D Standard Model propagating in an AdS background with an IR localized Higgs, compatibility of bulk KK gauge modes with EWPT yields a phenomenologically unappealing KK spectrum (m > 12.5 TeV) and leads to a "little hierarchy problem". For a bulk Higgs the solution to the hierarchy problem reduces the previous bound only by sqrt(3). As a way out, models with an enhanced bulk gauge symmetry SU(2)_R x U(1)_(B-L) were proposed. In this note we describe a much simpler (5D Standard) Model, where introduction of an enlarged gauge symmetry is no longer required. It is based on a warped gravitational background which departs from AdS at the IR brane and a bulk propagating Higgs. The model is consistent with EWPT for a range of KK masses within the LHC reach.

Warped Electroweak Breaking Without Custodial Symmetry

We propose an alternative to the introduction of an extra gauge (custodial) symmetry to suppress the contribution of KK modes to the T parameter in warped theories of electroweak breaking. The mechanism is based on a general class of warped 5D metrics and a Higgs propagating in the bulk. The metrics are nearly AdS in the UV region but depart from AdS in the IR region, towards where KK fluctuations are mainly localized, and have a singularity outside the slice between the UV and IR branes. This gravitational background is generated by a bulk stabilizing scalar field which triggers a natural solution to the hierarchy problem. Depending on the model parameters, gauge-boson KK modes can be consistent with present bounds on EWPT for m > 1 TeV at 95% CL. The model contains a light Higgs mode which unitarizes the four-dimensional theory. The reduction in the precision observables can be traced back to a large wave function renormalization for this mode.

Gravitational Backreaction Effects on the Holographic Phase Transition

We study radion stabilization in the compact Randall-Sundrum model by introducing a bulk scalar field, as in the Goldberger and Wise mechanism, but (partially) taking into account the backreactions from the scalar field on the metric. Our generalization reconciles the radion potential found by Goldberger and Wise with the radion mass obtained with the so-called superpotential method where backreaction is fully considered. Moreover we study the holographic phase transition and its gravitational wave signals in this model. The improved control over backreactions opens up a large region in parameter space and leads, compared to former analysis, to weaker constraints on the rank N of the dual gauge theory. We conclude that, in the regime where the 1/N expansion is justified, the gravitational wave signal is detectable by LISA.

Soft-Wall Stabilization

We propose a general class of five-dimensional soft-wall models with AdS metric near the ultraviolet brane and four-dimensional Poincaré invariance, where the infrared scale is determined dynamically. A large UV/IR hierarchy can be generated without any fine-tuning, thus solving the electroweak/Planck scale hierarchy problem. Generically, the spectrum of fluctuations is discrete with a level spacing (mass gap) provided by the inverse length of the wall, similar to RS1 models with Standard Model fields propagating in the bulk. Moreover two particularly interesting cases arise. They can describe: (a) a theory with a continuous spectrum above the mass gap which can model unparticles corresponding to operators of a CFT where the conformal symmetry is broken by a mass gap, and; (b) a theory with a discrete spectrum provided by linear Regge trajectories as in AdS/QCD models.

Conformal Neutrinos: an Alternative to the See-saw Mechanism

We analyze a scenario where the right-handed neutrinos make part of a strongly coupled conformal field theory and acquire an anomalous dimension γ<1 at a large scale Λ. Their Yukawa couplings to the Higgs become irrelevant at the fixed point and they are suppressed at low scales giving rise naturally to a small (sub-meV) Dirac neutrino mass which breaks the conformal invariance. We derive an upper bound on γfrom loop-induced flavor changing neutral currents. Neutrino Yukawa couplings can be sizable at electroweak scales and therefore the invisible decay of the Higgs in the neutrino channel can be comparable to the c\bar c and τ\barτmodes and predict interesting Higgs phenomenology. If lepton number is violated in the conformal theory an irrelevant Majorana mass operator for right-handed neutrinos appears for γ>1/2 giving rise to an inverse see-saw mechanism. In this case light sterile neutrinos do appear and neutrino oscillation experiments are able to probe our model.

The Baryogenesis Window in the MSSM

Electroweak baryogenesis provides an attractive explanation of the origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry that relies on physics at the weak scale and thus it is testable at present and near future high-energy physics experiments. Although this scenario may not be realized within the Standard Model, it can be accommodated within the MSSM provided there are new CP-violating phases and the lightest stop mass is smaller than the top-quark mass. In this work we provide an evaluation of the values of the stop (m_{\tilde t}) and Higgs (m_H) masses consistent with the requirements of electroweak baryogenesis based on an analysis that makes use of the renormalization group improved Higgs and stop potentials, and including the dominant two-loop effects at high temperature. We find an allowed window in the (m_{\tilde t},m_H)-plane, consistent with all present experimental data, where there is a strongly first-order electroweak phase transition and where the electroweak vacuum is metastable but sufficiently long-lived. In particular we obtain absolute upper bounds on the Higgs and stop masses, m_H\lesssim 127 GeV and m_{\tilde t}\lesssim 120 GeV, implying that this scenario will be probed at the LHC.

The Effective Theory of the Light Stop Scenario

Electroweak baryogenesis in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model may be realized within the light stop scenario, where the right-handed stop mass remains close to the top-quark mass to allow for a sufficiently strong first order electroweak phase transition. All other supersymmetric scalars are much heavier to comply with the present bounds on the Higgs mass and the electron and neutron electric dipole moments. Heavy third generation scalars render it necessary to resum large logarithm contributions to perform a trustable Higgs mass calculation. We have studied the one--loop RGE improved effective theory below the heavy scalar mass scale and obtained reliable values of the Higgs mass. Moreover, assuming a common mass $\tilde m$ for all heavy scalar particles, and values of all gaugino masses and the Higgsino mass parameter about the weak scale, and imposing gauge coupling unification, a two-loop calculation yields values of the mass $\tilde m$ in the interval between three TeV and six hundred TeV. Furthermore for a stop mass around the top quark mass, this translates into an upper bound on the Higgs mass of about 150 GeV. The Higgs mass bound becomes even stronger, of about 129 GeV, for the range of stop and gaugino masses consistent with electroweak baryogenesis. The collider phenomenology implications of this scenario are discussed in some detail.

A Confining Strong First-Order Electroweak Phase Transition

In the Randall-Sundrum model where the radion is stabilized by a Goldberger-Wise (GW) potential there is a supercooled transition from a deconfined to a confined phase at temperatures orders of magnitude below the typical Standard Model critical temperature. When the Higgs is localized at the IR brane the electroweak phase transition is delayed and becomes a strong first-order one where the Universe expands by a few e-folds. This generates the possibility of having the out-of-equilibrium condition required by electroweak baryogenesis in the electroweak phase transition. We have studied numerically the region of the GW parameter space where the theory is consistent and the latter possibility is realized. We have found that in most of the parameter space the nucleation temperature is so low that sphalerons are totally inactive inside the bubbles. The condition for sphalerons to be inactive after reheating imposes an upper bound on the reheating temperature that is weaker for heavy Higgs bosons so that the out-of-equilibrium condition seems to favor heavy over light Higgses. The condition for sphalerons to be active outside the bubbles puts an upper bound on the number of e-folds at the phase transition, roughly consistent with the critical value required by low-scale inflation to solve the cosmological horizon problem.

Unparticles-Higgs Interplay

We show that scalar unparticles coupled to the Standard Model Higgs at the renormalizable level can have a dramatic impact in the breaking of the electroweak symmetry already at tree level. In particular one can get the proper electroweak scale without the need of a Higgs mass term in the Lagrangian. By studying the mixed unparticle-Higgs propagator and spectral function we also show how unparticles can shift the Higgs mass away from its Standard Model value, λv^2, and influence other Higgs boson properties. Conversely, we study in some detail how electroweak symmetry breaking affects the unparticle sector by breaking its conformal symmetry and generating a mass gap. We also show that, for Higgs masses above that gap, unparticles can increase quite significantly the Higgs width.

Novel Effects in Electroweak Breaking from a Hidden Sector

The Higgs boson offers a unique window to hidden sector fields S_i, singlets under the Standard Model gauge group, via the renormalizable interactions |H|^2 S_i^2. We prove that such interactions can provide new patterns for electroweak breaking, including radiative breaking by dimensional transmutation consistent with LEP bounds, and trigger the strong enough first order phase transition required by electroweak baryogenesis.

Splitting Extended Supersymmetry

We show how splitting supersymmetry reconciles a class of intersecting brane models with unification. The gauge sector in these models arises in multiplets of extended supersymmetry while matter states are in N=1 representations. A deformation of the angles between the branes gives large masses to squarks and sleptons, as well as supersymmetry breaking contributions to other string states. The latter generate at one-loop heavy Dirac masses for Winos and gluinos and can induce a mass term for the Higgsino doublets. We find that this scenario is compatible with gauge coupling unification at high scale for both cases where the gauge sector is N=2 and N=4 supersymmetric. Moreover a neutralino, combination of neutral Higgsinos and Binos, is a natural candidate for dark matter.

Supersymmetry and Electroweak Breaking in the Interval

Hypermultiplets are considered in the five-dimensional interval where all fields are continuous and the boundary conditions are dynamically obtained from the action principle. The orbifold boundary conditions are obtained as particular cases. We can interpret the Scherk-Schwarz supersymmetry breaking as a misalignment of boundary conditions while a new source of supersymmetry breaking corresponding to a mismatch of different boundary parameters is identified. The latter can be viewed as coming from boundary supersymmetry breaking masses for hyperscalars and the nature of the corresponding supersymmetry breaking parameter is analyzed. For some regions of the parameter space where supersymmetry is broken (either by Scherk-Schwarz boundary conditions or by boundary hyperscalar masses) electroweak symmetry breaking can be triggered at the tree level.

Five-dimensional Massive Vector Fields and Radion Stabilization

We provide a description of the five-dimensional Higgs mechanism in supersymmetric gauge theories compactified on the orbifold S^1/Z_2 by means of the N=1 superfield formalism. Goldstone bosons absorbed by vector multiplets can come either from hypermultiplets or from gauge multiplets of opposite parity (Hosotani mechanism). Supersymmetry is broken by the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism. In the presence of massive hypermultiplets and gauge multiplets, with different supersymmetric masses, the radion can be stabilized with positive (de Sitter) vacuum energy. The masses of vector and hypermultiplets can be fine-tuned to have zero (Minkowski) vacuum energy.

Electroweak Baryogenesis and New TeV Fermions

New fermions, strongly coupled to the Standard Model Higgs boson provide a well motivated extension of the Standard Model (SM). In this work we show that, once new physics at heavier scales is added to stabilize the Higgs potential, such an extension of the SM can strengthen the first order electroweak phase transition and make the electroweak baryogenesis mechanism feasible. We propose a SM extension with TeV Higgsinos, Winos and Binos that satisfy the following properties: a) The electroweak phase transition is strong enough to avoid sphaleron erasure in the broken phase for values of the Higgs mass mH < 300 GeV; b) It provides large CP-violating currents that lead to the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe for natural values of the CP-violating phase; c) It also provides a natural Dark Matter candidate that can reproduce the observed dark matter density; d) It is consistent with electroweak precision measurements; e) It may arise from a softly broken supersymmetric theory with an extra (asymptotically free) gauge sector; e) It may be tested by electron electric dipole moment experiments in the near future.

Localized anomalies in orbifold gauge theories

We apply the path-integral formalism to compute the anomalies in general orbifold gauge theories (including possible non-trivial Scherk-Schwarz boundary conditions) where a gauge group G is broken down to subgroups H_f at the fixed points y=y_f. Bulk and localized anomalies, proportional to δ(y-y_f), do generically appear from matter propagating in the bulk. The anomaly zero-mode that survives in the four-dimensional effective theory should be canceled by localized fermions (except possibly for mixed U(1) anomalies). We examine in detail the possibility of canceling localized anomalies by the Green-Schwarz mechanism involving two- and four-forms in the bulk. The four-form can only cancel anomalies which do not survive in the 4D effective theory: they are called globally vanishing anomalies. The two-form may cancel a specific class of mixed U(1) anomalies. Only if these anomalies are present in the 4D theory this mechanism spontaneously breaks the U(1) symmetry. The examples of five and six-dimensional Z_N orbifolds are considered in great detail. In five dimensions the Green-Schwarz four-form has no physical degrees of freedom and is equivalent to canceling anomalies by a Chern-Simons term. In all other cases, the Green-Schwarz forms have some physical degrees of freedom and leave some non-renormalizable interactions in the low energy effective theory. In general, localized anomaly cancellation imposes strong constraints on model building.

Electroweak baryogenesis and the Higgs and stop masses

In this talk we review the actual situation concerning electroweak phase transition and baryogenesis in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. A strong enough phase transition requires light Higgs and stop eigenstates. For a Higgs mass in the range 110--115 GeV, there is a stop window in the range 105--165 GeV. If the Higgs is heavier than 115 GeV, stronger constrains are imposed on the space of supersymmetric parameters. A baryon-to-entropy ratio is generated by the chargino sector provided that the $μ$ parameter has a CP-violating phase larger than $\sim$ 0.04.

Finite temperature field theory and phase transitions

We review different aspects of field theory at zero and finite temperature, related to the theory of phase transitions. We discuss different renormalization conditions for the effective potential at zero temperature, emphasizing in particular the MS-bar renormalization scheme. Finite temperature field theory is discussed in the real and imaginary time formalisms, showing their equivalence in simple examples. Bubble nucleation by thermal tunneling, and the subsequent development of the phase transition is described in some detail. Some attention is also devoted to the breakdown of the perturbative expansion and the infrared problem in the finite temperature field theory. Finally the application to baryogenesis at the electroweak phase transition is done in the Standard Model and in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. In all cases we have translated the condition of not washing out any previously generated baryon asymmetry by upper bounds on the Higgs mass.
