Austere Submanifolds in Complex Projective Space

For an arbitrary submanifold $M \subset \mathbb{C}P^n$ we determine conditions under which it is austere, i.e., the normal bundle of $M$ is special Lagrangian with respect to Stenzel's Ricci-flat Kähler metric on $T\mathbb{C}P^n$. We also classify austere surfaces in $\mathbb{C}P^n$.

Ruled Austere Submanifolds of Dimension Four

We classify 4-dimensional austere submanifolds in Euclidean space ruled by 2-planes. The algebraic possibilities for second fundamental forms of an austere 4-fold M were classified by Bryant, falling into three types which we label A, B, and C. We show that if M is 2-ruled of Type A, then the ruling map from M into the Grassmannian of 2-planes in R^n is holomorphic, and we give a construction for M starting with a holomorphic curve in an appropriate twistor space. If M is 2-ruled of Type B, then M is either a generalized helicoid in R^6 or the product of two classical helicoids in R^3. If M is 2-ruled of Type C, then M is either a one of the above, or a generalized helicoid in R^7. We also construct examples of 2-ruled austere hypersurfaces in R^5 with degenerate Gauss map.

Austere Submanifolds of Dimension Four: Examples and Maximal Types

Austere submanifolds in Euclidean space were introduced by Harvey and Lawson in connection with their study of calibrated geometries. The algebraic possibilities for second fundamental forms of 4-dimensional austere submanifolds were classified by Bryant, into three types which we label A, B, and C. In this paper, we show that type A submanifolds correspond exactly to real Kahler submanifolds, we construct new examples of such submanifolds in R^6 and R^10, and we obtain classification results on submanifolds of types B and C with maximal second fundamental forms.

Special Lagrangians of cohomogeneity one in the resolved conifold

In this paper, which is a natural continuation of our previous paper math.DG/0504557, we describe some special Lagrangians of cohomogeneity one in the resolved conifold. Our main result gives a foliation of the resolved conifold by T^2-invariant special Lagrangians, where the generic leaf is topologically T^2 X R. We also obtain a family of SO(3)-invariant special Lagrangians. These special Lagrangian families in both the deformed and the resolved conifold approach asymptotically the same special Lagrangian cones in the conifold.

Cohomogeneity One Special Lagrangian Submanifolds in the Deformed Conifold

In this paper we describe the cohomogeneity one special Lagrangian 3-folds in the cotangent bundle of the 3-sphere, also known in the physics literature as a deformed conifold. Our main result gives a global foliation of the deformed conifold by T^2-invariant special Lagrangian 3-folds, where the generic leaf is topologically T^2 X R. In the limit, these special Lagrangians asymptotically approach a special Lagrangian cone on a torus in the conifold. Using moment map techniques we also recover the family of SO(n)-invariant special Lagrangian n-folds in the cotangent bundle of the n-sphere obtained by H. Anciaux.

Bundle Constructions of Calibrated Submanifolds in R^7 and R^8

We construct calibrated submanifolds of R^7 and R^8 by viewing them as total spaces of vector bundles and taking appropriate sub-bundles which are naturally defined using certain surfaces in R^4. We construct examples of associative and coassociative submanifolds of R^7 and of Cayley submanifolds of R^8. This construction is a generalization of the Harvey-Lawson bundle construction of special Lagrangian submanifolds of R^{2n}.

Second Order Families of Special Lagrangian Submanifolds in C^4

This paper extends to dimension 4 the results in the article "Second Order Families of Special Lagrangian 3-folds" by Robert Bryant. We consider the problem of classifying the special Lagrangian 4-folds in C^4 whose fundamental cubic at each point has a nontrivial stabilizer in SO(4). Points on special Lagrangian 4-folds where the SO(4)-stabilizer is nontrivial are the analogs of the umbilical points in the classical theory of surfaces. In proving existence for the families of special Lagrangian 4-folds, we used the method of exterior differential systems in Cartan-Kahler theory. This method is guaranteed to tell us whether there are any families of special Lagrangian submanifolds with a certain symmetry, but does not give us an explicit description of the submanifolds. To derive an explicit description, we looked at foliations by submanifolds and at other geometric particularities. In this manner, we settled many of the cases and described the families of special Lagrangian submanifolds in an explicit way.
