A Microscopic Derivation Of Coupled Spde's With A Kpz Flavor

We consider an interacting particles system composed of a Hamiltonian part and perturbed by a conservative stochastic noise so that the full system conserves two quantities: energy and volume. The Hamiltonian part is regulated by a scaling parameter vanishing in the limit. We study the form of the fluctuations of these quantities at equilibrium and derive coupled stochastic partial differential equations with a KPZ flavor.

An open microscopic model of heat conduction: evolution and non-equilibrium stationary states

We consider a one-dimensional chain of coupled oscillators in contact at both ends with heat baths at different temperatures, and subject to an external force at one end. The Hamiltonian dynamics in the bulk is perturbed by random exchanges of the neighbouring momenta such that the energy is locally conserved. We prove that in the stationary state the energy and the volume stretch profiles, in large scale limit, converge to the solutions of a diffusive system with Dirichlet boundary conditions. As a consequence the macroscopic temperature stationary profile presents a maximum inside the chain higher than the thermostats temperatures, as well as the possibility of uphill diffusion (energy current against the temperature gradient). Finally, we are also able to derive the non-stationary macroscopic coupled diffusive equations followed by the energy and volume stretch profiles.

Non-local Conservation Law from Stochastic Particle Systems

In this paper we consider an interacting particle system in $\mathbb{R}^d$ modelled as a system of $N$ stochastic differential equations driven by Lévy processes. The limiting behaviour as the size $N$ grows to infinity is achieved as a law of large numbers for the empirical density process associated with the interacting particle system. We prove that the empirical process converges, uniformly in the space variable, to the solution of the $d$-dimensional fractal conservation law.

Derivation of the stochastic Burgers equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions from the WASEP

We consider the weakly asymmetric simple exclusion process on the discrete space $\{1,...,n-1\}$, in contact with stochastic reservoirs, both with density $ρ\in{(0,1)}$ at the extremity points, and starting from the invariant state, namely the Bernoulli product measure of parameter $ρ$. Under time diffusive scaling $tn^2$ and for $ρ=\frac12$, when the asymmetry parameter is taken of order $1/ \sqrt n$, we prove that the density fluctuations at stationarity are macroscopically governed by the energy solution of the stochastic Burgers equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions, which is shown to be unique and different from the Cole-Hopf solution.

Macroscopic evolution of mechanical and thermal energy in a harmonic chain with random flip of velocities

We consider an unpinned chain of harmonic oscillators with periodic boundary conditions, whose dynamics is perturbed by a random flip of the sign of the velocities. The dynamics conserves the total volume (or elongation) and the total energy of the system. We prove that in a diffusive space-time scaling limit the profiles corresponding to the two conserved quantities converge to the solution of a diffusive system of differential equations. While the elongation follows a simple autonomous linear diffusive equation, the evolution of the energy depends on the gradient of the square of the elongation.

Equilibrium fluctuations for the weakly asymmetric discrete Atlas model

This contribution aims at presenting and generalizing a recent work of Hernandez, Jara and Valentim [DOI:10.1016/j.spa.2016.06.026]. We consider the weakly asymmetric version of the so-called discrete Atlas model, which has been introduced there. Precisely, we look at some equilibrium fluctuation field of a weakly asymmetric zero-range process which evolves on a discrete half-line, with a source of particles at the origin. We prove that its macroscopic evolution is governed by a stochastic heat equation with Neumann or Robin boundary conditions, depending on the range of the parameters of the model.

Second order Boltzmann-Gibbs principle for polynomial functions and applications

In this paper we give a new proof of the second order Boltzmann-Gibbs principle. The proof does not impose the knowledge on the spectral gap inequality for the underlying model and it relies on a proper decomposition of the antisymmetric part of the current of the system in terms of polynomial functions. In addition, we fully derive the convergence of the equilibrium fluctuations towards 1) a trivial process in case of supper-diffusive systems, 2) an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process or the unique energy solution of the stochastic Burgers equation, in case of weakly asymmetric diffusive systems. Examples and applications are presented for weakly and partial asymmetric exclusion processes, weakly asymmetric speed change exclusion processes and hamiltonian systems with exponential interactions.

Convergence to the Stochastic Burgers Equation from a degenerate microscopic dynamics

In this paper we prove the convergence to the stochastic Burgers equation from one-dimensional interacting particle systems, whose dynamics allow the degeneracy of the jump rates. To this aim, we provide a new proof of the second order Boltzmann-Gibbs principle introduced in [Gonçalves, Jara 2014]. The main technical difficulty is that our models exhibit configurations that do not evolve under the dynamics - the blocked configurations - and are locally non-ergodic. Our proof does not impose any knowledge on the spectral gap for the microscopic models. Instead, it relies on the fact that, under the equilibrium measure, the probability to find a blocked configuration in a finite box is exponentially small in the size of the box. Then, a dynamical mechanism allows to exchange particles even when the jump rate for the direct exchange is zero.

Crossover to the stochastic Burgers equation for the WASEP with a slow bond

We consider the weakly asymmetric simple exclusion process in the presence of a slow bond and starting from the invariant state, namely the Bernoulli product measure of parameter $ρ\in(0,1)$. The rate of passage of particles to the right (resp. left) is $\frac1{\vphantom{n^β}2}+\frac{a}{2n^{\vphantomβγ}}$ (resp. $\frac1{\vphantom{n^β}2}-\frac{a}{2n^{\vphantomβγ}}$) except at the bond of vertices $\{-1,0\}$ where the rate to the right (resp. left) is given by $\fracα{2n^β}+\frac{a}{2n^{\vphantomβγ}}$ (resp. $\fracα{2n^β}-\frac{a}{2n^{\vphantomβγ}}$). Above, $α>0$, $γ\geq β\geq 0$, $a\geq 0$. For $β<1$, we show that the limit density fluctuation field is an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process defined on the Schwartz space if $γ>\frac12$, while for $γ= \frac12$ it is an energy solution of the stochastic Burgers equation. For $γ\geqβ=1$, it is an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process associated to the heat equation with Robin's boundary conditions. For $γ\geqβ> 1$, the limit density fluctuation field is an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process associated to the heat equation with Neumann's boundary conditions.

Nonlinear Perturbation of a Noisy Hamiltonian Lattice Field Model: Universality Persistence

In [2] it has been proved that a linear Hamiltonian lattice field perturbed by a conservative stochastic noise belongs to the 3/2-Lévy/Diffusive universality class in the nonlinear fluctuating theory terminology [15], i.e. energy superdiffuses like an asymmetric stable 3/2-Lévy process and volume like a Brownian motion. According to this theory this should remain valid at zero tension if the harmonic potential is replaced by an even potential. In this work we consider a quartic anharmonicity and show that the result obtained in the harmonic case persists up to some small critical value of the anharmonicity.

Interpolation process between standard diffusion and fractional diffusion

We consider a Hamiltonian lattice field model with two conserved quantities, energy and volume, perturbed by stochastic noise preserving the two previous quantities. It is known that this model displays anomalous diffusion of energy of fractional type due to the conservation of the volume [5, 3]. We superpose to this system a second stochastic noise conserving energy but not volume. If the intensity of this noise is of order one, normal diffusion of energy is restored while it is without effect if intensity is sufficiently small. In this paper we investigate the nature of the energy fluctuations for a critical value of the intensity. We show that the latter are described by an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process driven by a Lévy process which interpolates between Brownian motion and the maximally asymmetric 3/2-stable Lévy process. This result extends and solves a problem left open in [4].

The gradient flow approach to hydrodynamic limits for the simple exclusion process

We give a new approach to the well-known convergence to the hydrodynamic limit for the symmetric simple exclusion process (SSEP). More precisely, we characterize any possible limit of its empirical density measures as solutions to the heat equation by passing to the limit in the gradient flow structure of the particle system.

Microscopic derivation of an adiabatic thermodynamic transformation

We obtain macroscopic adiabatic thermodynamic transformations by space-time scalings of a microscopic Hamiltonian dynamics subject to random collisions with the environment. The microscopic dynamics is given by a chain of oscillators subject to a varying tension (external force) and to collisions with external independent particles of "infinite mass". The effect of each collision is to change the sign of the velocity without changing the modulus. This way the energy is conserved by the resulting dynamics. After a diffusive space-time scaling and cross-graining, the profiles of volume and energy converge to the solution of a deterministic diffusive system of equations with boundary conditions given by the applied tension. This defines an irreversible thermodynamic transformation from an initial equilibrium to a new equilibrium given by the final tension applied. Quasi-static reversible adiabatic transformations are then obtained by a further time scaling. Then we prove that the relations between the limit work, internal energy and thermodynamic entropy agree with the first and second principle of thermodynamics.

From normal diffusion to superdiffusion of energy in the evanescent flip noise limit

We consider a harmonic chain perturbed by an energy conserving noise depending on a parameter $γ$. When $γ$ is of order one, the energy diffuses according to the standard heat equation after a space-time diffusive scaling. On the other hand, when $γ=0$, the energy superdiffuses according to a 3/4 fractional heat equation after a subdiffusive space-time scaling. In this paper, we study the existence of a crossover between these two regimes as a function of $γ$.

Hydrodynamic limit for the velocity flip model

We study the diffusive scaling limit for a chain of $N$ coupled oscillators. In order to provide the system with good ergodic properties, we perturb the Hamiltonian dynamics with random flips of velocities, so that the energy is locally conserved. We derive the hydrodynamic equations by estimating the relative entropy with respect to the local equilibrium state modified by a correction term.
