Gravitational charges and radiation in asymptotically locally de Sitter spacetimes

We present a comprehensive discussion of gravitational charges and radiation in four-dimensional asymptotically locally de Sitter (AldS) spacetimes. Such spacetimes have compact spatial sections and possess spacelike past and future infinities, $\mathscr{I}^\pm$. We show that the variational problem is well-posed if one specifies a conformal class up to three-dimensional diffeomorpshims at $\mathscr{I}^\pm$, provided one adds at $\mathscr{I}^\pm$ suitable local terms. These are analogues of the AdS covariant counterterms of holographic renormalisation. Radiation is possible only when the conformal class at infinity is non-trivial. Bulk diffeomorphisms that asymptote to conformal Killing vectors at $\mathscr{I}^\pm$ lead to gravitational charges that are conserved under radial translations, while transformations that asymptote to a general three-dimensional vector imply that the gravitational charges satisfy flux-balance laws. We also present quantities that are invariant under temporal translations, if gravitational flux is absent, but otherwise satisfy flux-balance laws. We derive these results using first principles application of Noether's method as well as covariant phase space methods. We apply our formalism to several exact solutions, including the Robinson-Trautman-dS class, which we use to demonstrate the existence of conserved charges even in the absence of asymptotic conformal Killing vectors and the existence of monotonic charges, including the Bondi mass.

Predictions with limited data: Bayesian (X)PINNs, entanglement surfaces and overconfidence

Solving differential equations from limited or noisy data remains a key challenge for physics-informed neural networks (PINNs), which are typically applied to already known and smooth solutions. In this work, we explore Bayesian PINNs and extended PINNs, (B-(X)PINNs), to solve non-linear second order differential equation typical for high energy theory, where data is only available from the boundary domain, to benchmark suitable approaches to PINNs in this category. In particular, we consider an entangling surface; a differential equation typical in holography. We perform asymptotic analysis to generate analytical training data from the boundary domain. We also explore the meaning of overconfidence in models that are constrained by physical priors and argue that standard overconfidence metrics are not suitable to consider when dealing with B-PINNs. Overconfidence can be a natural feature and not a bug in systems with soft or hard constraints on the loss function; one have to look at when the overconfidence is an artifact of the model adhering to the physics constraints. To diagnose this effect, we introduce an information density quantity, and a local physics-constraint coupling (PCC) metric, to capture locally to what extent the enforced physics collapses the posterior distribution. We also consider these quantities for a Liouville-type equation and the Van der Pol equation to probe apparent overconfidence further.

Replica analysis of entanglement properties

In this paper we develop a systematic analysis of the properties of entanglement entropy in curved backgrounds using the replica approach. We explore the analytic $(q-1)$ expansion of R\'enyi entropy $S_q$ and its variations; our setup applies to generic variations, from symmetry transformations to variations of the background metric or entangling region. Our methodology elegantly reproduces and generalises results from the literature on entanglement entropy in different dimensions, backgrounds, and states. We use our analytic expansions to explore the behaviour of entanglement entropy in static black hole backgrounds under specific scaling transformations, and we explain why this behaviour is key to determining whether there are islands of entanglement.

Flat holography and celestial shockwaves

In this paper we systematically develop the flat/CFT holographic dictionary, building on AdS/CFT holography. After analysing the behaviour of scalar field modes on hyperbolic slices of Minkowski and performing the holographic renormalisation for the associated onshell action, we obtain a holography dictionary between the bulk theory and the corresponding dual theory on the celestial sphere. We propose that a single scalar field in the bulk is dual to two series of operators on the celestial sphere; the scaling dimension of these operators takes values on the principal series. The real time features of the bulk theory, such as the dynamical and the casual structure, are encoded in the construction of correlation functions on the boundary via the coefficients of the bulk modes. Moreover, we will see that the two series of operators can be interpreted as ingoing and outgoing waves in the bulk. We illustrate our dictionary with the example of a single shock wave. Our results lay foundations for further computation within the flat/celestial CFT correspondence.

Holography, cellulations and error correcting codes

Quantum error correction codes associated with the hyperbolic plane have been explored extensively in the context of the AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence. In this paper we initiate a systematic study of codes associated with holographic geometries in higher dimensions, relating cellulations of the spatial sections of the geometries to stabiliser codes. We construct analogues of the HaPPY code for three-dimensional hyperbolic space (AdS$_4$), using both absolutely maximally entangled (AME) and non-AME codes. These codes are based on uniform regular tessellations of hyperbolic space but we note that AME codes that preserve the discrete symmetry of the polytope of the tessellation do not exist above two dimensions. We also explore different constructions of stabiliser codes for hyperbolic spaces in which the logical information is associated with the boundary and discuss their potential interpretation. We explain how our codes could be applied to interesting classes of holographic dualities based on gravity-scalar theories (such as JT gravity) through toroidal reductions of hyperbolic spaces.

Charges, conserved quantities and fluxes in de Sitter spacetime

We discuss the definition of conserved quantities in asymptotically locally de Sitter spacetimes. One may define an analogue of holographic charges at future and past infinity and at other Cauchy surfaces $I_t$ as integrals over the intersection of timelike surfaces $C$ and the Cauchy surface $I_t$. In general, the charges $Q^t$ defined on the Cauchy surface $I_t$ depend on $C$, but if gravitational flux is absent the charges are independent of $C$. On the other hand, if there is a net gravitational flux entering or leaving the spacetime region bounded by $C_1, C_2$ and two Cauchy surfaces then $ΔQ^t(C_1, C_2) = Q^t(C_1)-Q^t(C_2)$ changes by the same amount.

Renormalized entanglement entropy and curvature invariants

Renormalized entanglement entropy can be defined using the replica trick for any choice of renormalization scheme; renormalized entanglement entropy in holographic settings is expressed in terms of renormalized areas of extremal surfaces. In this paper we show how holographic renormalized entanglement entropy can be expressed in terms of the Euler invariant of the surface and renormalized curvature invariants. For a spherical entangling region in an odd-dimensional CFT, the renormalized entanglement entropy is proportional to the Euler invariant of the holographic entangling surface, with the coefficient of proportionality capturing the (renormalized) F quantity. Variations of the entanglement entropy can be expressed elegantly in terms of renormalized curvature invariants, facilitating general proofs of the first law of entanglement.

Generalised proofs of the first law of entanglement entropy

In this paper we develop generalised proofs of the holographic first law of entanglement entropy using holographic renormalisation. These proofs establish the holographic first law for non-normalizable variations of the bulk metric, hence relaxing the boundary conditions imposed on variations in earlier works. Boundary and counterterm contributions to conserved charges computed via covariant phase space analysis have been explored previously. Here we discuss in detail how counterterm contributions are treated in the covariant phase approach to proving the first law. Our methodology would be applicable to generalizing other holographic information analyses to wider classes of gravitational backgrounds.

Supersymmetry anomaly in the superconformal Wess-Zumino model

We present a comprehensive analysis of supersymmetry anomalies in the free and massless Wess-Zumino (WZ) model in perturbation theory. At the classical level the model possesses ${\mathcal N}=1$ superconformal symmetry, which is partially broken by quantum anomalies. The form of the anomalies and the part of the symmetry they break depend on the multiplet of conserved currents used. It was previously shown that the R-symmetry anomaly of the conformal current multiplet induces an anomaly in Q-supersymmetry, which appears first in 4-point functions. Here we confirm this result by an explicit 1-loop computation using a supersymmetric Pauli-Villars regulator. The conformal current multiplet does not exist in the regulated theory because the regulator breaks conformal invariance, R-symmetry and S-supersymmetry explicitly. The minimal massive multiplet is the Ferrara-Zumino (FZ) one and the supersymmetry preserved by the regulator is a specific field dependent combination of Q- and S- supersymmetry of the conformal multiplet. While this supersymmetry is non anomalous, conformal invariance, R-symmetry and the original Q- and S-supersymmetries are explicitly broken by finite contact terms, both in the regulated and renormalized theories. A conformal current multiplet does exist for the renormalized theory and may be obtained from the FZ multiplet by a set of finite local counterterms that eliminate the explicit symmetry breaking, thus restoring superconformal invariance up to anomalies. However, this necessarily renders both Q- and S-supersymmetries anomalous, as is manifest starting at 4-point functions of conformal multiplet currents. The paper contains a detailed discussion of a number of issues and subtleties related to Ward identities that may be useful in a wider context.

Cosmic branes and asymptotic structure

Superrotations of asymptotically flat spacetimes in four dimensions can be interpreted in terms of including cosmic strings within the phase space of allowed solutions. In this paper we explore the implications of the inclusion of cosmic branes on the asymptotic structure of vacuum spacetimes in dimension d > 4. We first show that only cosmic (d-3)-branes are Riemann flat in the neighbourhood of the brane, and therefore only branes of such dimension passing through the celestial sphere can respect asymptotic local flatness. We derive the asymptotically locally flat boundary conditions associated with including cosmic branes in the phase space of solutions. We find the asymptotic expansion of vacuum spacetimes in d=5 with such boundary conditions; the expansion is polyhomogenous, with logarithmic terms arising at subleading orders in the expansion. The asymptotically locally flat boundary conditions identified here are associated with an extended asymptotic symmetry group, which may be relevant to soft scattering theorems and memory effects.

Anomalous Supersymmetry

We show that supersymmetry is anomalous in ${\cal N}=1$ superconformal quantum field theories (SCFTs) with an anomalous R-symmetry. This anomaly was originally found in holographic SCFTs at strong coupling. Here we show that this anomaly is present in general and demonstrate it for the massless superconformal Wess-Zumino model via a one loop computation. The anomaly appears first in four-point functions of two supercurrents with either two R-currents or with an R-current and an energy momentum tensor. In fact, the Wess-Zumino consistency conditions together with the standard R-symmetry anomaly imply the existence of the anomaly. We outline the implications of this anomaly.

One point functions for black hole microstates

We compute one point functions of chiral primary operators in the D1-D5 orbifold CFT, in classes of states corresponding to microstates of two and three charge black holes. Black hole microstates describable by supergravity solutions correspond to coherent superpositions of states in the orbifold theory and we develop methods for approximating one point functions in such superpositions in the large N limit. We show that microstates built from long strings (large twist operators) have one point functions that are suppressed by powers of N. Accordingly, even when these microstates admit supergravity descriptions, the characteristic scales in these solutions are comparable to higher derivative corrections to supergravity.

(A)dS$\mathbf{_4}$ in Bondi gauge

We obtain the general asymptotic solutions of Einstein gravity with or without cosmological constant in Bondi gauge. The Bondi gauge was originally introduced in the context of gravitational radiation in asymptotically flat gravity. In the original work, initial conditions were prescribed at a null hypersurface and the Einstein equations were shown to take a nested form, which may be used to explicitly integrate them asymptotically. We streamline the derivation of the general asymptotic solution in the asymptotically flat case, and derive the most general asymptotic solutions for the case of non-zero cosmological constant of either sign (asymptotically locally AdS and dS solutions). With non-zero cosmological constant, we present integration schemes which rely on either prescribing data on the conformal boundary or on a null hypersurface and part of the conformal boundary. We explicitly work out the transformation to Fefferman-Graham gauge and identity how to extract the holographic data directly in Bondi coordinates. We illustrate the discussion with a number of examples and show that for asymptotically AdS${}_4$ spacetimes the Bondi mass is constant.

TT deformations in general dimensions

It has recently been proposed that Zamoldchikov's $T \bar{T}$ deformation of two-dimensional CFTs describes the holographic theory dual to AdS$_3$ at finite radius. In this note we use the Gauss-Codazzi form of the Einstein equations to derive a relationship in general dimensions between the trace of the quasi-local stress tensor and a specific quadratic combination of this stress tensor, on constant radius slices of AdS. We use this relation to propose a generalization of Zamoldchikov's $T \bar{T}$ deformation to conformal field theories in general dimensions. This operator is quadratic in the stress tensor and retains many but not all of the features of $T \bar{T}$. To describe gravity with gauge or scalar fields, the deforming operator needs to be modified to include appropriate terms involving the corresponding R currents and scalar operators and we can again use the Gauss-Codazzi form of the Einstein equations to deduce the forms of the deforming operators. We conclude by discussing the relation of the quadratic stress tensor deformation to the stress energy tensor trace constraint in holographic theories dual to vacuum Einstein gravity.

Correlation functions in the D1-D5 orbifold CFT

The D1-D5 system has an orbifold point in its moduli space, at which it may be described by an ${\cal N} = (4,4)$ supersymmetric sigma model with target space $M^N/S(N)$ where $M$ is $\mathbb{T}^4$ or $K3$. In this paper we consider correlation functions involving chiral operators constructed from twist fields: we find explicit expressions for processes involving a twist $n$ operator joining $n$ twist operators of arbitrary twist. These expressions are universal, in that they are independent of the choice of $M$, and the final results can be expressed in a compact form. We explain how these results are relevant to the black hole microstate programme: one point functions of chiral operators can be used to reconstruct AdS$_3$ near horizon regions of D1-D5 microstates and to match microstates constructed in supergravity with the CFT.

Generalized conformal structure, dilaton gravity and SYK

A theory admits generalized conformal structure if the only scale in the quantum theory is set by a dimensionful coupling. SYK is an example of a theory with generalized conformal structure and in this paper we investigate the consequences of this structure for correlation functions and for the holographic realization of SYK. The Ward identities associated with the generalized conformal structure of SYK are implemented holographically in gravity/multiple scalar theories, which always have a parent AdS$_3$ origin. For questions involving only the graviton/running scalar sector, one can always describe the bulk running in terms of a single scalar but multiple running scalars are in general needed once one includes the bulk fields corresponding to all SYK operators. We then explore chaos in holographic theories with generalized conformal structure. The four point function explored by Maldacena, Shenker and Stanford exhibits exactly the same chaotic behaviour in any such theory as in holographic realizations of conformal theories i.e. the dimensionful coupling scale does not affect the chaotic exponential growth.

Non-conformal entanglement entropy

We explore the behaviour of renormalized entanglement entropy in a variety of holographic models: non-conformal branes; the Witten model for QCD; UV conformal RG flows driven by explicit and spontaneous symmetry breaking and Schrödinger geometries. Focussing on slab entangling regions, we find that the renormalized entanglement entropy captures features of the previously defined entropic c-function but also captures deep IR behaviour that is not seen by the c-function. In particular, in theories with symmetry breaking, the renormalized entanglement entropy saturates for large entangling regions to values that are controlled by the symmetry breaking parameters.

The holographic F theorem

The F theorem states that, for a unitary three dimensional quantum field theory, the F quantity defined in terms of the partition function on a three sphere is positive, stationary at fixed point and decreases monotonically along a renormalization group flow. We construct holographic renormalization group flows corresponding to relevant deformations of three-dimensional conformal field theories on spheres, working to quadratic order in the source. For these renormalization group flows, the F quantity at the IR fixed point is always less than F at the UV fixed point, but F increases along the RG flow for deformations by operators of dimension $3/2 < Δ< 5/2$. Therefore the strongest version of the F theorem is in general violated.
