A consistent truncation of IIB supergravity on manifolds admitting a Sasaki-Einstein structure

We present a consistent truncation of IIB supergravity on manifolds admitting a Sasaki-Einstein structure, which keeps the metric and five real scalar fields. This theory can be further truncated to a constrained one-parameter family that depends on only the metric and one scalar, as well as to a theory with a metric and three scalars. The reduced theory admits supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric AdS_5 and AdS_4 x R solutions. We analyze the spectrum around the AdS critical points and identify the dual operators.

Topologically Massive Gravity and the AdS/CFT Correspondence

We set up the AdS/CFT correspondence for topologically massive gravity (TMG) in three dimensions. The first step in this procedure is to determine the appropriate fall off conditions at infinity. These cannot be fixed a priori as they depend on the bulk theory under consideration and are derived by solving asymptotically the non-linear field equations. We discuss in detail the asymptotic structure of the field equations for TMG, showing that it contains leading and subleading logarithms, determine the map between bulk fields and CFT operators, obtain the appropriate counterterms needed for holographic renormalization and compute holographically one- and two-point functions at and away from the 'chiral point' (mu = 1). The 2-point functions at the chiral point are those of a logarithmic CFT (LCFT) with c_L = 0, c_R = 3l/G_N and b = -3l/G_N, where b is a parameter characterizing different c = 0 LCFTs. The bulk correlators away from the chiral point (mu \neq 1) smoothly limit to the LCFT ones as mu \to 1. Away from the chiral point, the CFT contains a state of negative norm and the expectation value of the energy momentum tensor in that state is also negative, reflecting a corresponding bulk instability due to negative energy modes.

Non-relativistic holography

We consider holography for d-dimensional scale invariant but non-Lorentz invariant field theories, which do not admit the full Schrodinger symmetry group. We find new realizations of the corresponding (d+1)-dimensional gravity duals, engineered with a variety of matter Lagrangians, and their finite temperature generalizations. The thermodynamic properties of the finite temperature backgrounds are precisely those expected for anisotropic, scale invariant field theories. The brane and string theory realizations of such backgrounds are briefly discussed, along with their holographic interpretation in terms of marginal but non Lorentz invariant deformations of conformal field theories. We initiate discussion of holographic renormalization in these backgrounds, and note that such systematic renormalization is necessary to obtain the correct behavior of correlation functions.

Precision holography for non-conformal branes

We set up precision holography for the non-conformal branes preserving 16 supersymmetries. The near-horizon limit of all such p-brane solutions with p \leq 4, including the case of fundamental string solutions, is conformal to AdS_{p+2} x S^{8-p} with a linear dilaton. We develop holographic renormalization for all these cases. In particular, we obtain the most general asymptotic solutions with appropriate Dirichlet boundary conditions, find the corresponding counterterms and compute the holographic 1-point functions, all in complete generality and at the full non-linear level. The result for the stress energy tensor properly defines the notion of mass for backgrounds with such asymptotics. The analysis is done both in the original formulation of the method and also using a radial Hamiltonian analysis. The latter formulation exhibits most clearly the existence of an underlying generalized conformal structure. In the cases of Dp-branes, the corresponding dual boundary theory, the maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory SYM_{p+1}, indeed exhibits the generalized conformal structure found at strong coupling. We compute the holographic 2-point functions of the stress energy tensor and gluon operator and show they satisfy the expected Ward identities and the constraints of generalized conformal structure. The holographic results are also manifestly compatible with the M-theory uplift, with the asymptotic solutions, counterterms, one and two point functions etc of the IIA F1 and D4 appropriately descending from those of M2 and M5 branes, respectively. We present a few applications including the computation of condensates in Witten's model of holographic YM_4 theory.

The fuzzball proposal for black holes

The fuzzball proposal states that associated with a black hole of entropy S there are exp S horizon-free non-singular solutions that asymptotically look like the black hole but generically differ from the black hole up to the horizon scale. These solutions, the fuzzballs, are considered to be the black hole microstates while the original black hole represents the average description of the system. The purpose of this report is to review current evidence for the fuzzball proposal, emphasizing the use of AdS/CFT methods in developing and testing the proposal. In particular, we discuss the status of the proposal for 2 and 3 charge black holes in the D1-D5 system, presenting new derivations and streamlining the discussion of their properties. Results to date support the fuzzball proposal but further progress is likely to require going beyond the supergravity approximation and sharpening the definition of a "stringy fuzzball". We outline how the fuzzball proposal could resolve longstanding issues in black hole physics, such as Hawking radiation and information loss. Our emphasis throughout is on connecting different developments and identifying open problems and directions for future research.

Anatomy of bubbling solutions

We present a comprehensive analysis of holography for the bubbling solutions of Lin-Lunin-Maldacena. These solutions are uniquely determined by a coloring of a 2-plane, which was argued to correspond to the phase space of free fermions. We show that in general this phase space distribution does not determine fully the 1/2 BPS state of N=4 SYM that the gravitational solution is dual to, but it does determine it enough so that vevs of all single trace 1/2 BPS operators in that state are uniquely determined to leading order in the large N limit. These are precisely the vevs encoded in the asymptotics of the LLM solutions. We extract these vevs for operators up to dimension 4 using holographic renormalization and KK holography and show exact agreement with the field theory expressions.

Holographic Coulomb branch vevs

We compute holographically the vevs of all chiral primary operators for supergravity solutions corresponding to the Coulomb branch of N=4 SYM and find exact agreement with the corresponding field theory computation. Using the dictionary between 10d geometries and field theory developed to extract these vevs, we propose a gravity dual of a half supersymmetric deformation of N=4 SYM by certain irrelevant operators.

Matching of correlators in AdS_3/CFT_2

Recently exact agreement has been found between three-point correlators of chiral operators computed in string theory on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 with NS-NS flux and those computed in the symmetric orbifold CFT. However, it has also been shown that these correlators disagree with those computed in supergravity, under any identification of single particle operators which respects the symmetries. In this note we resolve this disagreement: the key point is that mixings with multi-particle operators are not suppressed even at large N in extremal correlators. Allowing for such mixings, orbifold/string theory operators and supergravity operators can be matched such that both non-extremal and extremal three point functions agree, giving further evidence for the non-renormalization of the chiral ring.

Fuzzballs with internal excitations

We construct general 2-charge D1-D5 horizon-free non-singular solutions of IIB supergravity on T^4 and K3 describing fuzzballs with excitations in the internal manifold; these excitations are characterized by arbitrary curves. The solutions are obtained via dualities from F1-P solutions of heterotic and type IIB on T^4 for the K3 and T^4 cases, respectively. We compute the holographic data encoded in these solutions, and show that the internal excitations are captured by vevs of chiral primaries associated with the middle cohomology of T^4 or K3. We argue that each geometry is dual to a specific superposition of R ground states determined in terms of the Fourier coefficients of the curves defining the supergravity solution. We compute vevs of chiral primaries associated with the middle cohomology and show that they indeed acquire vevs in the superpositions corresponding to fuzzballs with internal excitations, in accordance with the holographic results. We also address the question of whether the fuzzball program can be implemented consistently within supergravity.

Fuzzball solutions for black holes and D1-brane--D5-brane microstates

We revisit the relation between fuzzball solutions and D1-D5 microstates. A consequence of the fact that the R ground states (in the usual basis) are eigenstates of the R-charge is that only neutral operators can have non-vanishing expectation values on these states. We compute the holographic 1-point functions of the fuzzball solutions and find that charged chiral primaries have non-zero expectation values, except when the curve characterizing the solution is circular. The non-zero vevs reflect the fact that a generic curve breaks R-symmetry completely. This implies that fuzzball solutions (excepting circular ones) can only correspond to superpositions of R states and we give a proposal for the superposition corresponding to a given curve. We also address the question of what would be the geometric dual of a given R ground state.

Kaluza-Klein Holography

We construct a holographic map between asymptotically AdS_5 x S^5 solutions of 10d supergravity and vacuum expectation values of gauge invariant operators of the dual QFT. The ingredients that enter in the construction are (i) gauge invariant variables so that the KK reduction is independent of any choice of gauge fixing; (ii) the non-linear KK reduction map from 10 to 5 dimensions (constructed perturbatively in the number of fields); (iii) application of holographic renormalization. A non-trivial role in the last step is played by extremal couplings. This map allows one to reliably compute vevs of operators dual to any KK fields. As an application we consider a Coulomb branch solution and compute the first two non-trivial vevs, involving operators of dimension 2 and 4, and reproduce the field theory result, in agreement with non-renormalization theorems. This constitutes the first quantitative test of the gravity/gauge theory duality away from the conformal point involving a vev of an operator dual to a KK field (which is not one of the gauged supergravity fields).

General 2 charge geometries

Two charge BPS horizon free supergravity geometries are important in proposals for understanding black hole microstates. In this paper we construct a new class of geometries in the NS1-P system, corresponding to solitonic strings carrying fermionic as well as bosonic condensates. Such geometries are required to account for the full microscopic entropy of the NS1-P system. We then briefly discuss the properties of the corresponding geometries in the dual D1-D5 system.

Properties of branes in curved spacetimes

A generic property of curved manifolds is the existence of focal points. We show that branes located at focal points of the geometry satisfy special properties. Examples of backgrounds to which our discussion applies are AdS_m x S^n and plane wave backgrounds. As an example, we show that a pair of AdS_2 branes located at the north and south pole of the S^5 in AdS_5 x S^5 are half supersymmetric and that they are dual to a two-monopole solution of N=4 SU(N) SYM theory. Our second example involves spacelike branes in the (Lorentzian) plane wave. We develop a modified lightcone gauge for the open string channel, analyze in detail the cylinder diagram and establish open-closed duality. When the branes are located at focal points of the geometry the amplitude acquires most of the characteristics of flat space amplitudes. In the open string channel the special properties are due to stringy modes that become massless.

Open strings in the plane wave background I: Quantization and symmetries

We systematically investigate open strings in the plane wave background of type IIB string theory. We carefully analyze possible boundary conditions for open strings and find static as well as time-dependent branes. The branes fall into equivalence classes depending on whether they are related by the action of target space isometries. In particular static branes localized at the origin of transverse space and certain time-dependent branes fall into the same equivalence class. We analyze thoroughly the symmetries of all branes we discuss. Apart from symmetries descending from target space isometries, the worldsheet action being free admits a countably infinite number of other global worldsheet symmetries. We find that one can use such worldsheet symmetries to restore seemingly broken target space symmetries. In particular, we show that D-branes localized at arbitrary constant positions which were thought to be 1/4 supersymmetric in fact have sixteen supercharges whilst D-branes which were thought to be non-supersymmetric have eight supercharges. We discuss in detail the quantization in all cases.

Worldvolume supersymmetries for branes in plane waves

We study the worldvolume supersymmetries of M2 branes in the maximally supersymmetric plane wave background of M theory. For certain embeddings the standard probe analysis indicates that the worldvolume theory has less than 16 supersymmetries. We show that at the quadratic level the worldvolume theory admits additional linearly realized supersymmetries, and that the spectra of the branes are organized into multiplets of these symmetries. We find however that these supersymmetries are not respected by worldvolume interactions. Our analysis was motivated by recent work showing that D-branes in the maximally supersymmetric plane wave background of IIB string theory admit supersymmetries beyond those of the probe analysis. The construction of the additional supercharges in this case was specific to a string worldsheet that is a strip and the present results suggest that string interactions do not preserve these symmetries.

An overview of branes in the plane wave background

We give an overview of D-branes in the maximally supersymmetric plane wave background of IIB supergravity. We start by reviewing the results of the probe analysis. We then present the open string analysis and show how certain spacetime symmetries are restored using worldsheet symmetries. We discuss the construction of these branes as boundary states and summarize what is known about the dual gauge theory description.

Open strings in the plane wave background II: Superalgebras and Spectra

In hep-th/0211011 we started a systematic investigation of open strings in the plane wave background. In this paper we continue the analysis by discussing the superalgebras of conserved charges, the spectra of open strings, and the spectra of DBI fluctuations around D-brane embeddings. We also derive the gluing conditions for corresponding boundary states and analyze their symmetries. All results are consistent with each other, and confirm the existence of additional supersymmetries as previously discussed. We further show that for every symmetry current one can construct a (countably) infinite number of related currents that contain more worldsheet derivatives, and discuss non-local symmetries.

Branes in AdS and pp-wave spacetimes

We find half supersymmetric AdS-embeddings in AdS_5 x S^5 corresponding to all quarter BPS orthogonal intersections of D3-branes with Dp-branes. A particular case is the Karch-Randall embedding AdS_4 x S^2. We explicitly prove that these embeddings are supersymmetric by showing that the kappa symmetry projections are compatible with half of the target space Killing spinors and argue that all these cases lead to AdS/dCFT dualities involving a CFT with a defect. We also find an asymptotically AdS_4 x S^2 embedding that corresponds to a holographic RG-flow on the defect. We then consider the pp-wave limit of the supersymmetric AdS-embeddings and show how it leads to half supersymmetric D-brane embeddings in the pp-wave background. We systematically analyze D-brane embeddings in the pp-wave background along with their supersymmetry. We construct all supersymmetric D-branes wrapped along the light-cone using operators in the dual gauge theory: the open string states are constructed using defect fields. We also find supersymmetric D1 (monopoles) and D3 (giant gravitons) branes that wrap only one of the light-cone directions. These correspond to non-perturbative states in the dual gauge theory.
