Flavour Physics: the questions, the clues and the challenges

Flavour physics addresses some of the questions for which the Standard Model does not provide a satisfactory and complete answer: the origin of the replication of the fundamental constituents and of their mass hierarchy. This paper reviews some of the theoretical approaches and the experimental strategies that can lead us to a more complete picture. Results included in this review are |V_{cb}|= 0.0382 +/- 0.0032, |V_{ub}/V_{cb}|=0.085 +/- 0.023 and a preliminary measurement of the branching fraction of B -> pi^+ pi ^- = (0.47 ({+0.18}-{-0.15}) +/- 0.06) x 10^{-5}.}

Getting Ready for CP Violation in B decays

We review some recent results on b decays relevant to future CP violation studies. In particular, some new data on rare hadronic B decays will be presented, as well as inclusive searches for evidence for gluonic penguins and first hints of final state interaction phases in B decays to D* rho. The results discussed are based on data collected by the CLEO experiment including up to 5.8 x 10 ^6 B Bbar pairs.

Progress towards CLEO III: the silicon tracker and the LiF-TEA Ring Imaging Cherenkov Detector

We describe the two major components of CLEO III: the Silicon Vertex Detector and the Ring Imaging Cherenkov Detector (RICH). The Silicon Vertex Detector is a four layer barrel-style device which spans the radial distance from 2.5 cm to 10.1 cm and covers 93% of the solid angle. It is being constructed using double-sided silicon sensors read out by front end electronics devices especially designed for this application. The RICH system consists of LiF radiators and multiwire proportional chambers containing a mixture of CH4 and TEA gases. The radiators are both flat and "sawtooth." Results from a test beam run of final CLEO III RICH modules will be presented, as well as test beam data on sensors to be employed in the Silicon Vertex Tracker.

B Decay Studies at Cleo

Weak decays of heavy flavored hadrons are sensitive probes of several facets of the Standard Model. In particular the experimental study of B meson semileptonic decaysis starting to pin down the quark mixing parameters in the Cabibbo Kobayashi Maskawa matrix. In addition, some features of the non--perturbative regime of the strong interaction are probed by these decays. New results from the CLEO experiment at the CESR electron-positron collider, based on a data sample of up to 3.5 inverse femtobarn, provide crucial information on both of these aspects of heavy flavor phenomenology.

The Ring Imaging Detector for Cleo III

The CLEO detector will undergo major improvements in conjunction with a high luminosity upgrade of the CESR electron positron collider, that should increase the luminosity of this machine by a factor of 10. The most innovative feature of the planned CLEO detector is the addition of a state of the art particle identification system, based on a proximity focused Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector. The goal is to achieve good hadron identification at all the momenta relevant to the study of decays of B mesons produced at the upsilon(4S) resonance. This detector design will be discussed, including details of the mechanical design and the readout electronics. The performance of a prototype module will be described.
