First double red giant Algol system with active mass transfer

Double red giant stars are very important for studies of the stability of mass transfer, common-envelope evolution, and the formation of double white dwarfs with short orbital periods. However, no double red giant system undergoing mass transfer has yet been found. We present the discovery of a close Algol-type binary system composed of two red giant stars. This is the first known semi-detached system observed during the very short phase when the accretor has expanded into a red giant just before entering the common envelope phase. The $H_α$ line suggests that the system has recently lost some material, which is now moving toward us. We present a consistent analysis of all the available spectroscopic and photometric observations of this system, constraining its orbital parameters and the fundamental properties of the components. Our findings are supported by a binary evolution model that successfully reproduces the currently observed parameters. The model suggests that the system will eventually merge into a single star.

Photometric Analysis of TCP J20171288$+$1156589 -- WZ Sge Type Dwarf Nova with Delayed Ordinary Superhumps Emergence

We present the results of photometric analysis of WZ Sge type dwarf nova TCP J20171288$+$1156589. This object exhibited an outburst with a large amplitude of $>7.9$ magnitudes and was observed for over a month. The photometric evolution of the superoutburst was atypical for WZ Sge-type dwarf novae. Periodogram analisys reveals early superhumps with the most probable period of $0.0611\pm0.0001$ days during the initial decline. After a plateau phase of approximately 11 days, ordinary superhumps (likely stage B) emerged with a period of $0.0616\pm0.0001$ days, corresponding to a superhump excess of $ε=0.008$ correspondingly. This delay in the onset of ordinary superhumps is an unusual feature among WZ Sge stars. We evaluated the main parameters of the system: mass ratio $q=M_{RD}/M_{WD}=0.06\pm0.005$, yielding component masses of $M_{WD}\sim1.0\pm0.15M_{\odot}$ for the white dwarf and $M_{RD}=0.06\pm0.01M_{\odot}$ for the donor. The estimated distance to the system is $\sim850$ pc, and the binary separation is $a=0.67\pm0.03R_{\odot}$.

Broad line region echo from highly accreting intermediate-mass black hole candidate SDSS J144850.08+160803.1. The first probe of intra-night variability and reverberation mapping

Elusive intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) can be used as ``time-squeezing'' machines, enabling studies of AGN geometry via reverberation mapping on much shorter timescales than their supermassive siblings. Constraints on the BLR radius for IMBH candidates across a broad range of Eddington ratios help probe the unexplored faint end of the radius-luminosity ($R-L$) relation in AGNs. This opens up the opportunity to build a more robust $M_{BH}$ estimator. The present study is aimed at: (a) confirming a highly accreting IMBH candidate and (b) demonstrating the feasibility of the first photometric BLR RM campaign for IMBHs with high Eddington rates. SDSS J144850.08+160803.1 was identified as an IMBH candidate from a broad H$α$-selected spectroscopic sample from SDSS. We carried out XMM-Newton X-ray observations to confirm its AGN status, along with narrowband H$α$ and broadband SDSS g' monitoring over five months (March-July 2024) using a 60-cm telescope at the Caucasus Mountain Observatory. These time series allowed us both to probe the short-timescale variability and extract the time lag between the BLR and AD continuum. XMM-Newton detected J1448+16 as a bright X-ray point source with a photon index of $Γ= 2.32^{+0.15}_{-0.13}$ and X-ray luminosity of $L_{2-10\,\rm{keV}}=(3.3^{+0.5}_{-0.4})\times10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$, confirming its AGN activity. From the SDSS optical spectrum and X-ray properties, we estimated a BH mass of $\sim(0.9-2.4)~\times10^{5}M_{\odot}$ and Eddington rate of $\sim37-112\%$. We report high-amplitude $\sim55\%$ intra-night ($\sim1.7$~h) H$α$ variability for this IMBH and extract a tentative BLR RM radius estimate of $\sim1-8~\mathrm{days}$. This work is a proof of concept for further high-Eddington-rate IMBH variability studies and BLR RM campaigns, which will be essential for an efficient calibration of the $R-L$ relation at the faint end.

TCP J07222683$+$6220548: a new AM CVn type system with infrequent outbursts

We present the discovery of TCP J07222683$+$6220548, a new ultracompact binary system of the AM CVn type. This system was first identified displaying a $ΔV = 7.6$ mag outburst on 2025-01-20.9416 UTC by the New Milky Way wide-field survey for transients and later independently detected by ASAS-SN and ZTF. The outburst peaked at $V_{\rm max} = 12.45$ and lasted for seven days, followed by a series of rebrightenings. No previous outbursts are found in archival data. Positive superhumps with a period of $0.032546 \pm 0.000084$ d ($46.87 \pm 0.12$ min), barely detectable during the main outburst, became clearly visible during the first rebrightening that lasted from day 18 to day 24 after the initial outburst. No convincing change in the superhump period was detected. Dense time-series photometry follow-up by a pair of 0.5-m INASAN robotic telescopes, together with VSNET and AAVSO observers, was essential for identifying TCP J07222683$+$6220548 as an AM CVn system and triggering confirmation spectroscopy with the 2.5-m CMO SAI telescope. Some outbursting AM CVn systems lacking such detailed follow-up may remain unrecognized among the newly discovered cataclysmic variable candidates.

Differential Speckle Polarimetry of Betelgeuse in 2019-2020: the rise is different from the fall

Recently published episodic spectral (Levesque and Massey, 2020) and high angular resolution (Montarges et al, 2020) observations of Betelgeuse suggest that the deep minimum of 2019-2020 was caused by an enhanced dust abundance in the stellar atmosphere. Detailed monitoring of such events may prove useful for constructing consistent physical models of mass loss by evolved stars. For such observations it is fundamentally important to employ methods resolving an inhomogeneous stellar atmosphere. We present the differential speckle polarimetric observations of Betelgeuse at 2.5-m telescope of Caucasian Mountain Observatory of SAI MSU covering the period of 2019-2020 minimum. The observations were secured on 17 dates at wavelengths 465, 550, 625 and 880 nm. The circumstellar reflection nebula with the angular size of $\approx0.1^{\prime\prime}$ was detected for all the dates and at all wavelengths. The morphology of the nebula changed significantly over the observational period. Net polarized brightness of the envelope remained constant until February 2020, while the stellar $V$ band flux decreased 2.5 times. Starting from mid-February 2020, polarized flux of the envelope rose 2.1 times, at the same time the star returned to the pre-minimum state of October 2019. Basing on these data and our low resolution spectrum obtained on 2020-04-06 we confirm a conclusion that the minimum is caused by the formation of a dust cloud located on the line of sight. A quantitative characterisation of this cloud will be possible when the data on its thermal radiation are employed.

Chemical composition of metal-poor stars in Coma Berenices ultra-faint dwarf galaxy as a proxy to individual chemical enrichment events

We present NLTE abundances and atmospheric parameters for three metal-poor stars ([Fe/H]<-2) in Coma Berenices ultra-faint dwarf galaxy (UFD). The derived results are based on new photometric observations obtained with the 2.5-m telescope of the SAI MSU Caucasian observatory and spectra from the archive of the 10-m Keck telescope. Effective temperatures were determined from V-I, V-K, V-J colours. For each star, Teffs derived from different colours agree within 20K. Surface gravities (log g) were calculated using a relation between log g, MV, BC, distance, Teff, and mass, adopted as 0.8MSun. The NLTE abundances for Na, Mg, Ca, Ti, Fe, Ni, Sr, and Ba were determined. A revision of atmospheric parameters and abundances, based on new photometric observations and accurate modelling of spectral line formation resulted in reinterpretation of the star formation history in Coma Berenices UFD. The derived chemical abundance patterns for three stars differ from each other and from that, which is typical for the MW halo stars of similar [Fe/H]. The S1 star shows solar [alpha/Fe] and unprecedentedly low [Na/Mg] of -1.46, which is the lowest value among metal-poor stars known to date. Abundance pattern of the S1 star is well reproduced by nucleosynthesis model in metal-free massive stars explosion. The stars S2 and S3, in contrast to S1, show high [alpha/Fe] ratios, for example, [Mg/Fe]=0.8 in S2, while stars with -3.5<[Fe/H]<-2 in the other dwarf galaxies and the MW show a typical ratio [Ca,Mg/Fe] of 0.3 dex. All the three stars show low Sr and Ba abundances. These peculiarities in chemical composition argue for a small number of nucleosynthesis events contributed to chemical abundances of these stars. A wide range of metallicity, 0.65 dex, observed in Coma Berenices is likely produced by inhomogeneous mixing of the interstellar medium, but not an increase in [Fe/H] during a prolonged star formation.

The frequency distribution of the height above the Galactic plane for the novae

In order to examine the hypothesis of the existence of two different kinds of nova populations in the Galaxy - 'disk' novae and 'bulge' novae - the frequency distribution in the z-direction was obtained for 64 novae. The fact that large number of fast novae related to disk novae are found at a significant distance from the Galactic plane (up to z~3700 pc) can't result from photometric measurements errors. Slow novae considered to belong to bulge novae show more close concentration to the Galactic plane (z<1700 pc). A Kolmogorov-Smirnov test run on the data showed that the two populations hypothesis probability amounts to 95.56%.
