Technical report on a long-wave unstable thin film equation with convection

In this technical report, we consider a nonlinear 4th-order degenerate parabolic partial differential equation that arises in modelling the dynamics of an incompressible thin liquid film on the outer surface of a rotating horizontal cylinder in the presence of gravity. The parameters involved determine a rich variety of qualitatively different flows. Depending on the initial data and the parameter values, we prove the existence of nonnegative periodic weak solutions. In addition, we prove that these solutions and their gradients cannot grow any faster than linearly in time; there cannot be a finite-time blow-up. Finally, we present numerical simulations of solutions.

On computing the instability index of a non-selfadjoint differential operator associated with coating and rimming flows

We study the problem of finding the instability index of certain non-selfadjoint fourth order differential operators that appear as linearizations of coating and rimming flows, where a thin layer of fluid coats a horizontal rotating cylinder. The main result reduces the computation of the instability index to a finite-dimensional space of trigonometric polynomials. The proof uses Lyapunov's method to associate the differential operator with a quadratic form, whose maximal positive subspace has dimension equal to the instability index. The quadratic form is given by a solution of Lyapunov's equation, which here takes the form of a fourth order linear PDE in two variables. Elliptic estimates for the solution of this PDE play a key role. We include some numerical examples.

On the nature of ill-posedness of the forward-backward heat equation

We study the Cauchy problem with periodic initial data for the forward-backward heat equation defined by the J-self-adjoint linear operator L depending on a small parameter. The problem has been originated from the lubrication approximation of a viscous fluid film on the inner surface of the rotating cylinder. For a certain range of the parameter we rigorously prove the conjecture, based on the numerical evidence, that the set of eigenvectors of the operator $L$ does not form a Riesz basis in $Ł^2 (-π,π)$. Our method can be applied to a wide range of the evolutional problems given by $PT-$symmetric operators.

Spectrum of a non-self-adjoint operator associated with the periodic heat equation

We study the spectrum of the linear operator $L = - \partial_θ - ε\partial_θ (\sin θ\partial_θ)$ subject to the periodic boundary conditions on $θ\in [-π,π]$. We prove that the operator is closed in $L^2([-π,π])$ with the domain in $H^1_{\rm per}([-π,π])$ for $|ε| < 2$, its spectrum consists of an infinite sequence of isolated eigenvalues and the set of corresponding eigenfunctions is complete. By using numerical approximations of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, we show that all eigenvalues are simple, located on the imaginary axis and the angle between two subsequent eigenfunctions tends to zero for larger eigenvalues. As a result, the complete set of linearly independent eigenfunctions does not form a basis in $H^1_{\rm per}([-π,π])$.

Feshbach Resonance Management of Bose-Einstein Condensates in Optical Lattices

We analyze gap solitons in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in optical lattice potentials under Feshbach resonance management. Starting with an averaged Gross-Pitaevsky (GP) equation with a periodic potential, we employ an envelope wave approximation to derive coupled-mode equations describing the slow BEC dynamics in the first spectral gap of the optical lattice. We construct exact analytical formulas describing gap soliton solutions and examine their spectral stability using the Chebyshev interpolation method. We show that these gap solitons are unstable far from the threshold of local bifurcation and that the instability results in the distortion of their shape. We also predict the threshold of the power of gap solitons near the local bifurcation limit.

Two-pulse solutions in the fifth-order KdV equation : rigorous theory and numerical approximations

We revisit existence and stability of two-pulse solutions in the fifth-order Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equation with two new results. First, we modify the Petviashvili method of successive iterations for numerical (spectral) approximations of pulses and prove convergence of iterations in a neighborhood of two-pulse solutions. Second, we prove structural stability of embedded eigenvalues of negative Krein signature in a linearized KdV equation. Combined with stability analysis in Pontryagin spaces, this result completes the proof of spectral stability of the corresponding two-pulse solutions. Eigenvalues of the linearized problem are approximated numerically in exponentially weighted spaces where embedded eigenvalues are isolated from the continuous spectrum. Approximations of eigenvalues and full numerical simulations of the fifth-order KdV equation confirm stability of two-pulse solutions related to the minima of the effective interaction potential and instability of two-pulse solutions related to the maxima points.
