Stratification of $\mathrm{SU}(r)$-character varieties of twisted Hopf links

We describe the geometry of the character variety of representations of the fundamental group of the complement of a Hopf link with $n$ twists, namely $Γ_{n}=\langle x,y \,| \, [x^n,y]=1 \rangle$ into the group $\mathrm{SU}(r)$. For arbitrary rank, we provide geometric descriptions of the loci of irreducible and totally reducible representations. In the case $r = 2$, we provide a complete geometric description of the character variety, proving that this $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-character variety is a deformation retract of the larger $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$-character variety, as conjectured by Florentino and Lawton. In the case $r = 3$, we also describe different strata of the $\mathrm{SU}(3)$-character variety according to the semi-simple type of the representation.

Hodge-Deligne polynomials of SL(2,C)-character varieties for curves of small genus

We compute the Hodge-Deligne polynomials of the moduli spaces of representations of the fundamental group of a complex surface into SL(2,C), for the case of small genus g, and allowing the holonomy around a fixed point to be any matrix of SL(2,C), that is Id, -Id, diagonalisable, or of either of the two Jordan types. For this, we introduce a new geometric technique, based on stratifying the space of representations, and on the analysis of the behaviour of the Hodge-Deligne polynomial under fibrations.

On character varieties of singular manifolds

In this paper, we construct a lax monoidal Topological Quantum Field Theory that computes virtual classes, in the Grothendieck ring of algebraic varieties, of $G$-representation varieties over manifolds with conic singularities, which we will call nodefolds. This construction is valid for any algebraic group $G$, in any dimension and also in the parabolic setting. In particular, this TQFT allow us to compute the virtual classes of representation varieties over complex singular planar curves. In addition, in the case $G = \mathrm{SL}_{2}(k)$, the virtual class of the associated character variety over a nodal closed orientable surface is computed both in the non-parabolic and in the parabolic scenarios.

Representation variety for the rank one affine group

The aim of this paper is to study the virtual classes of representation varieties of surface groups onto the rank one affine group. We perform this calculation by three different approaches: the geometric method, based on stratifying the representation variety into simpler pieces; the arithmetic method, focused on counting their number of points over finite fields; and the quantum method, which performs the computation by means of a Topological Quantum Field Theory. We also discuss the corresponding moduli spaces of representations and character varieties, which turn out to be non-equivalent due to the non-reductiveness of the underlying group.

Hodge polynomials of the SL(2,C)-character variety of an elliptic curve with two marked points

We compute the Hodge polynomials for the moduli space of representations of an elliptic curve with two marked points into SL(2,C). When we fix the conjugacy classes of the representations around the marked points to be diagonal and of modulus one, the character variety is diffeomorphic to the moduli space of strongly parabolic Higgs bundles, whose Betti numbers are known. In that case we can recover some of the Hodge numbers of the character variety. We extend this result to the moduli space of doubly periodic instantons.

Moduli spaces of framed $G$--Higgs bundles and symplectic geometry

Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface, $D\, \subset\, X$ a reduced effective divisor, $G$ a connected complex reductive affine algebraic group and $H_x\, \subsetneq\, G_x$ a Zariski closed subgroup for every $x\, \in\, D$. A framed principal $G$--bundle is a pair $(E_G,\, ϕ)$, where $E_G$ is a holomorphic principal $G$--bundle on $X$ and $ϕ$ assigns to each $x\, \in\, D$ a point of the quotient space $(E_G)_x/H_x$. A framed $G$--Higgs bundle is a framed principal $G$--bundle $(E_G,\, ϕ)$ together with a section $θ\, \in\, H^0(X,\, \text{ad}(E_G)\otimes K_X\otimes{\mathcal O}_X(D))$ such that $θ(x)$ is compatible with the framing $ϕ$ for every $x\, \in\, D$. We construct a holomorphic symplectic structure on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{FH}(G)$ of stable framed $G$--Higgs bundles. Moreover, we prove that the natural morphism from $\mathcal{M}_{FH}(G)$ to the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{H}(G)$ of $D$-twisted $G$--Higgs bundles $(E_G,\, θ)$ that forgets the framing, is Poisson. These results generalize \cite{BLP} where $(G,\, \{H_x\}_{x\in D})$ is taken to be $(\text{GL}(r,{\mathbb C}),\, \{\text{I}_{r\times r}\}_{x\in D})$. We also investigate the Hitchin system for $\mathcal{M}_{FH}(G)$ and its relationship with that for $\mathcal{M}_{H}(G)$.

On Higgs Bundles on Nodal Curves

This is a review article on some applications of generalised parabolic structures to the study of torsion free sheaves and $L$-twisted Hitchin pairs on nodal curves. In particular, we survey on the relation between representations of the fundamental group of a nodal curve and the moduli spaces of generalised parabolic bundles and generalised parabolic $L$-twisted Hitchin pairs on its normalisation as well as on an analogue of the Hitchin map for generalised parabolic $L$-twisted Hitchin pairs.

Symplectic geometry of a moduli space of framed Higgs bundles

Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface and $D$ an effective divisor on $X$. Let ${\mathcal N}_H(r,d)$ denote the moduli space of $D$-twisted stable Higgs bundles (a special class of Hitchin pairs) on $X$ of rank $r$ and degree $d$. It is known that ${\mathcal N}_H(r,d)$ has a natural holomorphic Poisson structure which is in fact symplectic if and only if $D$ is the zero divisor. We prove that ${\mathcal N}_H(r,d)$ admits a natural enhancement to a holomorphic symplectic manifold which is called here ${\mathcal M}_H(r,d)$. This ${\mathcal M}_H(r,d)$ is constructed by trivializing, over $D$, the restriction of the vector bundles underlying the $D$-twisted Higgs bundles; such objects are called here as framed Higgs bundles. We also investigate the symplectic structure on the moduli space ${\mathcal M}_H(r,d)$ of framed Higgs bundles as well as the Hitchin system associated to it.

A lax monoidal Topological Quantum Field Theory for representation varieties

We construct a lax monoidal Topological Quantum Field Theory that computes Deligne-Hodge polynomials of representation varieties of the fundamental group of any closed manifold into any complex algebraic group $G$. As byproduct, we obtain formulas for these polynomials in terms of homomorphisms between the space of mixed Hodge modules on $G$. The construction is developed in a categorical-theoretic framework allowing its application to other situations.

Bohr--Sommerfeld Lagrangians of moduli spaces of Higgs bundles

Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus at least two. Let $M_H(r,d)$ denote the moduli space of semistable Higgs bundles on $X$ of rank $r$ and degree $d$. We prove that the compact complex Bohr-Sommerfeld Lagrangians of $M_H(r,d)$ are precisely the irreducible components of the nilpotent cone in $M_H(r,d)$. This generalizes to Higgs $G$-bundles and also to the parabolic Higgs bundles.

Integrable systems and Torelli theorems for the moduli spaces of parabolic bundles and parabolic Higgs bundles

We prove a Torelli theorem for the moduli space of semistable parabolic Higgs bundles over a smooth complex projective algebraic curve under the assumption that the parabolic weight system is generic. When the genus is at least two, using this result we also prove a Torelli theorem for the moduli space of semistable parabolic bundles of rank at least two with generic parabolic weights. The key input in the proofs is a method of J.C. Hurtubise, Integrable systems and algebraic surfaces, Duke Math. Jour. 83 (1996), 19--49.

The Topology of Parabolic Character Varieties of Free Groups

Let G be a complex affine algebraic reductive group, and let K be a maximal compact subgroup of G. Fix elements h_1,...,h_m in K. For n greater than or equal to 0, let X (respectively, Y) be the space of equivalence classes of representations of the free group of m+n generators in G (respectively, K) such that for each i between 1 and m, the image of the i-th free generator is conjugate to h_i. These spaces are parabolic analogues of character varieties of free groups. We prove that Y is a strong deformation retraction of X. In particular, X and Y are homotopy equivalent. We also describe explicit examples relating X to relative character varieties.

On moduli spaces of Hitchin pairs

Let $X$ be a compact Riemann surface $X$ of genus at--least two. Fix a holomorphic line bundle $L$ over $X$. Let $\mathcal M$ be the moduli space of Hitchin pairs $(E ,ϕ\in H^0(End(E)\otimes L))$ over $X$ of rank $r$ and fixed determinant of degree $d$. We prove that, for some numerical conditions, $\mathcal M$ is irreducible, and that the isomorphism class of the variety $\mathcal M$ uniquely determines the isomorphism class of the Riemann surface $X$.

Moduli of Parabolic Higgs Bundles and Atiyah Algebroids

In this paper we study the geometry of the moduli space of (non-strongly) parabolic Higgs bundles over a Riemann surface with marked points. We show that this space possesses a Poisson structure, extending the one on the dual of an Atiyah algebroid over the moduli space of parabolic vector bundles. By considering the case of full flags, we get a Grothendieck-Springer resolution for all other flag types, in particular for the moduli spaces of twisted Higgs bundles, as studied by Markman and Bottacin and used in the recent work of Laumon-Ngô. We discuss the Hitchin system, and demonstrate that all these moduli spaces are integrable systems in the Poisson sense.

Torelli theorem for the Deligne--Hitchin moduli space

Fix integers $g\geq 3$ and $r\geq 2$, with $r\geq 3$ if $g=3$. Given a compact connected Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g$, let $\MDH(X)$ denote the corresponding $\text{SL}(r, {\mathbb C})$ Deligne--Hitchin moduli space. We prove that the complex analytic space $\MDH(X)$ determines (up to an isomorphism) the unordered pair $\{X, \overline{X}\}$, where $\overline{X}$ is the Riemann surface defined by the opposite almost complex structure on $X$.
