On a class of toric manifolds arising from simplicial complexes

Given an arbitrary abstract simplicial complex $K$ on $[m]:=\{1,2,\ldots, m\}$, different from the simplex $Δ_{[m]}$ with $m$ vertices, we introduce and study a canonical $(2m-2)$-dimensional toric manifold $X_K$, associated to the canonical $(m-1)$-dimensional complete regular fan $Σ_K$. This construction yields an infinite family of toric manifolds that are not quasitoric and provides a topological proof of the Dehn-Sommerville relations for the associated Bier sphere $\mathrm{Bier}(K)$. Finally, we classify the canonical real and complex moment-angle manifolds of Lusternik-Schnirelmann category $\leq 2$ and prove a criterion for orientability of the canonical real toric manifolds.

Polytopality of simple games

The Bier sphere $Bier(\mathcal{G}) = Bier(K) = K\ast_ΔK^\circ$ and the canonical fan $Fan(Γ) = Fan(K)$ are combinatorial/geometric companions of a simple game $\mathcal{G} = (P,Γ)$ (equivalently the associated simplicial complex $K$), where $P$ is the set of players, $Γ\subseteq 2^P$ is the set of wining coalitions, and $K = 2^P\setminus Γ$ is the simplicial complex of losing coalitions. We characterize roughly weighted majority games as the games $Γ$ such that $Bier(\mathcal{G})$ (respectively $Fan(Γ)$) is canonically polytopal (canonically pseudo-polytopal) and show, by an experimental/theoretical argument, that all simple games with at most five players are polytopal.

Polytopal Bier spheres and Kantorovich-Rubinstein polytopes of weighted cycles

The problem of deciding if a given triangulation of a sphere can be realized as the boundary sphere of a simplicial, convex polytope is known as the "Simplicial Steinitz problem". It is known by an indirect and non-constructive argument that a vast majority of Bier spheres are non-polytopal. Contrary to that, we demonstrate that the Bier spheres associated to threshold simplicial complexes are all polytopal. Moreover, we show that all Bier spheres are starshaped. We also establish a connection between Bier spheres and Kantorovich-Rubinstein polytopes by showing that the boundary sphere of the KR-polytope associated to a polygonal linkage (weighted cycle) is isomorphic to the Bier sphere of the associated simplicial complex of "short sets".

Combinatorics of `unavoidable complexes'

The partition number $π(K)$ of a simplicial complex $K\subset 2^{[n]}$ is the minimum integer $ν$ such that for each partition $A_1\uplus\ldots\uplus A_ν= [n]$ of $[n]$ at least one of the sets $A_i$ is in $K$. A complex $K$ is $r$-unavoidable if $π(K)\leq r$. Motivated by the problems of Tverberg-Van Kampen-Flores type, and inspired by the `constraint method' of Blagojević, Frick, and Ziegler, arXiv:1401.0690 [math.CO], we study the combinatorics of $r$-unavoidable complexes.

Signed polyomino tilings by n-in-line polyominoes and Groebner bases

Conway and Lagarias observed that a triangular region T(m) in a hexagonal lattice admits signed tiling by three-in-line polyominoes (tribones) if and only if m=9d-1 or m=9d for some integer d. We apply the theory of Groebner bases over integers to show that T(m) admits a signed tiling by n-in-line polyominoes (n-bones) if and only if m=dn^2-1 or m=dn^2 for some integer d. Explicit description of the Groebner basis allows us to calculate the "Groebner discrete volume" of a lattice region by applying the division algorithm to its `Newton polynomial'. Among immediate consequences is a description of the tile homology group of the $n$-in-line polyomino.
