Universal Hitchin moduli spaces

We study metric aspects of the universal moduli space of solutions to Hitchin's equations as the complex structure $J$ varies over the Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}$ of a closed surface $Σ$. Our approach is gauge theoretical and builds on the theory of Kähler fibrations and the moment map interpretation of constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics. Our first main result establishes that, over the moduli space of cscK metrics, the universal moduli space of solutions to Hitchin's equations carries a natural complex structure together with a family of pseudo-Kähler metrics forming a Kähler fibration with a Kähler Ehresmann connection. We then investigate a second universal moduli space, constructed from the space of flat $G$-connections over $\mathcal{T}$, which admits a nontrivial $J$-dependent Kähler fibration structure discovered by Hitchin. Using symplectic reduction, we build universal moduli spaces of solutions to the harmonicity equations depending on a coupling constant $α$, obtaining natural complex and pseudo-Kähler structures and an explicit Kähler potential. The main novelty here is that this moduli space is defined by a system coupling the scalar curvature with a cubic term in the Higgs field. Finally, we propose a conjectural relationship between the two resulting families of moduli spaces in the weak-coupling limit $α\to 0$, inspired by the twistor geometry of Hitchin's hyperkähler moduli space.

A parabolic flow for the large volume heterotic $G_2$ system

We introduce a geometric flow of conformally coclosed $G_2$-structures, whose fixed points are large volume solutions of the heterotic $G_2$ system, with vanishing scalar torsion class $τ_0 = 0$. After conformal rescaling, it becomes a flow of coclosed $G_2$-structures, related to Grigorian's modified $G_2$ coflow, which is coupled to a flow for a dilaton function. Our main results establish fundamental short-time existence and Shi-type smoothing properties of this flow, as well as a classification of its fixed points. By a classical rigidity result in the string theory literature, the fixed points on a compact manifold correspond to torsion-free $G_2$-structures, that is, to metrics with holonomy contained in $G_2$. Thus, we establish in the affirmative a folklore question in the special holonomy community, about the existence of a well-posed flow for coclosed $G_2$-structures with fixed points given by torsion-free $G_2$-structures. The flow also satisfies a monotonicity formula for the $G_2$-dilaton functional (volume scale in string theory), which allows us to strengthen the rigidity result with an alternative proof. The monotonicity of the $G_2$-dilaton functional, combined with the Shi-type estimates, leads to a general result on the convergence of nonsingular solutions. A dimension reduction analysis reveals an interesting link with natural flows for $SU(3)$-structures, previously introduced in the literature.

Gauge theory for string algebroids

We introduce a moment map picture for holomorphic string algebroids where the Hamiltonian gauge action is described by means of inner automorphisms of Courant algebroids. The zero locus of our moment map is given by the solutions of the Calabi system, a coupled system of equations which provides a unifying framework for the classical Calabi problem and the Hull-Strominger system. Our main results are concerned with the geometry of the moduli space of solutions, and assume a technical condition which is fulfilled in examples. We prove that the moduli space carries a pseudo-Kähler metric with Kähler potential given by the dilaton functional, a topological formula for the metric, and an infinitesimal Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau type theorem.

$\mathrm{G}_2$-structures with torsion and the deformed Shatashvili-Vafa vertex algebra

We construct representations of the deformed Shatashvili-Vafa vertex algebra $\mathrm{SV}_a$, with parameter $a \in \mathbb{C}$, as recently proposed in the physics literature by Fiset and Gaberdiel. The geometric input for our construction are integrable $\mathrm{G}_2$-structures with closed torsion, solving the heterotic $\mathrm{G}_2$ system with $α'=0$ on the group manifolds $S^3\times T^4$ and $S^3\times S^3\times S^1$. From considerations in string theory, one expects the chiral algebra of these backgrounds to include $\mathrm{SV}_a$, and we provide a mathematical realization of this expectation by obtaining embeddings of $\mathrm{SV}_a$ in the corresponding superaffine vertex algebra and the chiral de Rham complex. In our examples, the parameter $a$ is proportional to the scalar torsion class of the $\mathrm{G}_2$ structure, $a \sim τ_0$, as expected from previous work in the semi-classical limit by the second author, jointly with De la Ossa and Marchetto.

Pluriclosed flow and the Hull-Strominger system

We define a natural extension of pluriclosed flow aiming at constructing solutions of the Hull-Strominger system. We give several geometric formulations of this flow, which yield a series of a priori estimates for the flow and also for the Hull-Strominger system. The evolution equations are derived using the theory of string algebroids, a class of Courant algebroids which occur naturally in higher gauge theory. Using this, we interpret the flow as generalized Ricci flow and also as a higher/coupled version of Hermitian-Yang-Mills flow, proving furthermore that it is compatible with symmetry reduction. Regarding our main analytical results, we prove a priori $C^{\infty}$ estimates for uniformly parabolic solutions. This in particular settles the question of smooth regularity of uniformly elliptic solutions of the Hull-Strominger system, generalizing Yau's $C^3$ estimate for the complex Monge-Ampère equation. We prove global existence and convergence results for the flow on special backgrounds, and discuss a conjectural relationship of the flow to the geometrization of Reid's fantasy.

Coupled $\operatorname{G}_2$-instantons

We introduce the coupled instanton equations for a metric, a spinor, a three-form, and a connection on a bundle, over a spin manifold. Special solutions in dimensions $6$ and $7$ arise, respectively, from the Hull--Strominger and the heterotic $\operatorname{G}_2$ system. The equations are motivated by recent developments in theoretical physics and can be recast using generalized geometry; we investigate how coupled instantons relate to generalized Ricci-flat metrics and also to Killing spinors on a Courant algebroid. We present two open questions regarding how these different geometric conditions are intertwined, for which a positive answer is expected from recent developments in the physics literature by De la Ossa, Larfors and Svanes, and in the mathematics literature on Calabi--Yau manifolds, in recent work by the second-named author with González Molina. We give a complete solution to the first of these problems, providing a new method for the construction of instantons in arbitrary dimensions. For $\operatorname{G}_2$-structures with torsion coupled to $\operatorname{G}_2$-instantons, in dimension $7$, we also establish results around the second problem. The last part of the present work carefully studies the approximate solutions to the heterotic $\operatorname{G}_2$-system constructed by the third and fourth authors on contact Calabi--Yau $7$-manifolds, for which we prove the existence of approximate coupled $\operatorname{G}_2$-instantons and generalized Ricci-flat metrics.

Vertex algebras from the Hull-Strominger system

Motivated by the programme on mirror symmetry for non-Kähler manifolds, we construct representations of the $N=2$ superconformal vertex algebra associated to solutions of the Hull-Strominger system. The construction is via embeddings of the $N=2$ superconformal vertex algebra in the chiral de Rham complex of a string Courant algebroid. Our results require that the connection $\nabla$, one of the unknowns of the system, is Hermitian-Yang-Mills. Our main theorem proves that any solution of the Hull-Strominger system satisfying this condition has an associated $N=2$ embedding.

(0,2) Mirror Symmetry on homogeneous Hopf surfaces

In this work we find the first examples of (0,2) mirror symmetry on compact non-Kähler complex manifolds. For this we follow Borisov's approach to mirror symmetry using vertex algebras and the chiral de Rham complex. Our examples of (0,2) mirrors are given by pairs of Hopf surfaces endowed with a Bismut-flat pluriclosed metric. Requiring that the geometry is homogeneous, we reduce the problem to the study of Killing spinors on a quadratic Lie algebra and the construction of embeddings of the $N=2$ superconformal vertex algebra in the superaffine vertex algebra, combined with topological T-duality.

Futaki Invariants and Yau's Conjecture on the Hull-Strominger system

We find a new obstruction to the existence of solutions of the Hull-Strominger system, which goes beyond the balanced property of the Calabi-Yau manifold $(X,Ω)$ and the Mumford-Takemoto slope stability of the bundle over it. The basic principle is the construction of a (possibly indefinite) Hermitian-Einstein metric on the holomorphic string algebroid associated to a solution of the system, provided that the connection $\nabla$ on the tangent bundle is Hermitian-Yang Mills. Using this, we define a family of Futaki invariants obstructing the existence of solutions in a given balanced class. Our results are motivated by a strong version of a conjecture by Yau on the existence problem for these equations.

Harmonic metrics for the Hull-Strominger system and stability

We investigate stability conditions related to the existence of solutions of the Hull-Strominger system with prescribed balanced class. We build on recent work by the authors, where the Hull-Strominger system is recasted using non-Hermitian Yang-Mills connections and holomorphic Courant algebroids. Our main development is a notion of harmonic metric for the Hull-Strominger system, motivated by an infinite-dimensional hyperKähler moment map and related to a numerical stability condition, which we expect to exist generically for families of solutions. We illustrate our theory with an infinite number of continuous families of examples on the Iwasawa manifold.

Canonical metrics on holomorphic Courant algebroids

The solution of the Calabi Conjecture by Yau implies that every Kähler Calabi-Yau manifold $X$ admits a metric with holonomy contained in $\textrm{SU}(n)$, and that these metrics are parametrized by the positive cone in $H^{1,1}(X,\mathbb{R})$. In this work we give evidence of an extension of Yau's theorem to non-Kähler manifolds, where $X$ is replaced by a compact complex manifold with vanishing first Chern class endowed with a holomorphic Courant algebroid $Q$ of Bott-Chern type. The equations that define our notion of best metric correspond to a mild generalization of the Hull-Strominger system, whereas the role of $H^{1,1}(X,\mathbb{R})$ is played by an affine space of 'Aeppli classes' naturally associated to $Q$ via Bott-Chern secondary characteristic classes.

Non-Kähler Calabi-Yau geometry and pluriclosed flow

Hermitian, pluriclosed metrics with vanishing Bismut-Ricci form give a natural extension of Calabi-Yau metrics to the setting of complex, non-Kähler manifolds, and arise independently in mathematical physics. We reinterpret this condition in terms of the Hermitian-Einstein equation on an associated holomorphic Courant algebroid, and thus refer to solutions as Bismut Hermitian-Einstein. This implies Mumford-Takemoto slope stability obstructions, and using these we exhibit infinitely many topologically distinct complex manifolds in every dimension with vanishing first Chern class which do not admit Bismut Hermitian-Einstein metrics. This reformulation also leads to a new description of pluriclosed flow in terms of Hermitian metrics on holomorphic Courant algebroids, implying new global existence results, in particular on all complex non-Kähler surfaces of nonnegative Kodaira dimension. On complex manifolds which admit Bismut-flat metrics we show global existence and convergence of pluriclosed flow to a Bismut-flat metric, which in turn gives a classification of generalized Kähler structures on these spaces.

Gravitating vortices with positive curvature

We give a complete solution to the existence problem for gravitating vortices with non-negative topological constant $c \geqslant 0$. Our first main result builds on previous results by Yang and establishes the existence of solutions to the Einstein-Bogomol'nyi equations, corresponding to $c=0$, in all admissible Kähler classes. Our second main result completely solves the existence problem for $c>0$. Both results are proved by the continuity method and require that a GIT stability condition for an effective divisor on the Riemann sphere is satisfied. For the former, the continuity path starts from a given solution with $c = 0$ and deforms the Kähler class. For the latter result we start from the established solution in any fixed admissible Kähler class and deform the coupling constant $α$ towards $0$. A salient feature of our argument is a new bound $S_g \geqslant c$ for the curvature of gravitating vortices, which we apply to construct a limiting solution along the path via Cheeger-Gromov theory.

Generalized Ricci Flow

This book gives an introduction to fundamental aspects of generalized Riemannian, complex, and Kähler geometry. This leads to an extension of the classical Einstein-Hilbert action, which yields natural extensions of Einstein and Calabi-Yau structures as `canonical metrics' in generalized Riemannian and complex geometry. The generalized Ricci flow is introduced as a tool for constructing such metrics, and extensions of the fundamental Hamilton/Perelman regularity theory of Ricci flow are proved. These results are refined in the setting of generalized complex geometry, where the generalized Ricci flow is shown to preserve various integrability conditions, taking the form of pluriclosed flow and generalized Kähler-Ricci flow. This leads to global convergence results, and applications to complex geometry. A purely mathematical introduction to the physical idea of T-duality is given, and a discussion of its relationship to generalized Ricci flow.

$T$-Dual solutions and infinitesimal moduli of the $G_2$-Strominger system

We consider $G_2$-structures with torsion coupled with $G_2$-instantons, on a compact $7$-dimensional manifold. The coupling is via an equation for $4$-forms which appears in supergravity and generalized geometry, known as the Bianchi identity. First studied by Friedrich and Ivanov, the resulting system of partial differential equations describes compactifications of the heterotic string to three dimensions, and is often referred to as the $G_2$-Strominger system. We study the moduli space of solutions and prove that the space of infinitesimal deformations, modulo automorphisms, is finite dimensional. We also provide a new family of solutions to this system, on $T^3$-bundles over $K3$ surfaces and for infinitely many different instanton bundles, adapting a construction of Fu-Yau and the second named author. In particular, we exhibit the first examples of $T$-dual solutions for this system of equations.

Holomorphic string algebroids

We introduce the category of holomorphic string algebroids, whose objects are Courant extensions of Atiyah Lie algebroids of holomorphic principal bundles, as considered by Bressler, and whose morphisms correspond to inner morphisms of the underlying holomorphic Courant algebroids in the sense of Severa. This category provides natural candidates for Atiyah Lie algebroids of holomorphic principal bundles for the (complexified) string group and their morphisms. Our main results are a classification of string algebroids in terms of Cech cohomology, and the construction of a locally complete family of deformations of string algebroids via a differential graded Lie algebra.

On the Kähler-Yang-Mills-Higgs equations

In this paper we introduce a set of equations on a principal bundle over a compact complex manifold coupling a connection on the principal bundle, a section of an associated bundle with Kähler fibre, and a Kähler structure on the base. These equations are a generalization of the Kähler-Yang-Mills equations introduced by the authors. They also generalize the constant scalar curvature for a Kähler metric studied by Donaldson and others, as well as the Yang-Mills-Higgs equations studied by Mundet i Riera. We provide a moment map interpretation of the equations, construct some first examples, and study obstructions to the existence of solutions.
