Random matrix approach to three-dimensional QCD with a Chern-Simons term

We propose a random matrix theory for QCD in three dimensions with a Chern-Simons term at level $k$ which spontaneously breaks the flavor symmetry according to U($2N_{\rm f}$) $\to $ U($N_{\rm f}+k$)$\times$U($N_{\rm f}-k$). This random matrix model is obtained by adding a complex part to the action for the $k=0$ random matrix model. We derive the pattern of spontaneous symmetry breaking from the analytical solution of the model. Additionally, we obtain explicit analytical results for the spectral density and the spectral correlation functions for the Dirac operator at finite matrix dimension, that become complex. In the microscopic domain where the matrix size tends to infinity, they are expected to be universal, and give an exact analytical prediction to the spectral properties of the Dirac operator in the presence of a Chern-Simons term. Here, we calculate the microscopic spectral density. It shows exponentially large (complex) oscillations which cancel the phase of the $k=0$ theory.

Preserving Topology while Breaking Chirality: From Chiral Orthogonal to Anti-symmetric Hermitian Ensemble

We consider a parameter dependent ensemble of two real random matrices with Gaussian distribution. It describes the transition between the symmetry class of the chiral Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (Cartan class B$|$DI) and the ensemble of antisymmetric Hermitian random matrices (Cartan class B$|$D). It enjoys the special feature that, depending on the matrix dimension $N$, it has exactly $ν=0$ $(1)$ zero-mode for $N$ even (odd), throughout the symmetry transition. This "topological protection" is reminiscent of properties of topological insulators. We show that our ensemble represents a Pfaffian point process which is typical for such transition ensembles. On a technical level, our results follow from the applicability of the Harish-Chandra integral over the orthogonal group. The matrix valued kernel determining all eigenvalue correlation functions is explicitly constructed in terms of skew-orthogonal polynomials, depending on the topological index $ν=0,1$. These polynomials interpolate between Laguerre and even (odd) Hermite polynomials for $ν=0$ $(1)$, in terms of which the two limiting symmetry classes can be solved. Numerical simulations illustrate our analytical results for the spectral density and an expansion for the distribution of the smallest eigenvalue at finite $N$.

Secrecy Rate of Cooperative MIMO in Presence of a Location Constrained Eavesdropper

We propose and study the cooperative MIMO architecture to enable and to improve the secrecy transmissions between clusters of mobile devices in the presence of an eavesdropper with certain location constraint. The cooperative MIMO system in this paper (referred to as Reconfigurable Distributed MIMO) is formed by temporarily activating clusters of nearby trusted mobile devices, with each cluster being centrally coordinated by its corresponding cluster head. We assume that the transmitters apply a practical eigen-direction precoding scheme to transmit the confidential signal and artificial noise, while the eavesdropper can be located in multiple possible locations in the proximity. We first obtain the expression of the secrecy rate, where the required average mutual information between the transmitters and the eavesdropper is characterized by closed-form approximations. The proposed approximations are especially useful in the secrecy rate maximization, where the original non-convex problem can be solved by the successive convex approximations. Numerical results show that the secrecy rate can be significantly improved by leveraging the location constraint of the eavesdropper, compared to the existing result. We also demonstrate that the secrecy rate can be further improved by increasing the cluster size.

Symmetry Crossover Protecting Chirality in Dirac Spectra

We consider a random matrix model in the hard edge limit (local spectral statistics at the origin in the limit of large matrix size) which interpolates between the Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE) and the chiral Gaussian unitary ensemble (chGUE). We show that this model is equivalent to the low-energy limit of certain QCD-like theories in the epsilon-regime. Moreover, we present a detailed derivation of the microscopic level density as well as the partially quenched and unquenched partition functions. Some of these results have been announced in a former letter by us. Our derivation relies on the supersymmetry method and is performed here step by step. Additionally, we compute the chiral condensate and the pion condensate for the quenched as well as unquenched settings. We also investigate the limits to GUE and chGUE and confirm our conjecture that the non-uniformity of the GUE limit would carry over to the hard edge limit.

GUE-chGUE Transition preserving Chirality at finite Matrix Size

We study a random matrix model which interpolates between the the singular values of the Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE) and of the chiral Gaussian unitary ensemble (chGUE). This symmetry crossover is analogous to the one realized by the Hermitian Wilson Dirac operator in lattice QCD, but our model preserves chiral symmetry of chGUE exactly unlike the Hermitian Wilson Dirac operator. This difference has a crucial impact on the statistics of near-zero eigenvalues, though both singular value statistics build a Pfaffian point process. The model in the present work is motivated by the Dirac operator of 3d staggered fermions, 3d QCD at finite isospin chemical potential, and 4d QCD at high temperature. We calculate the spectral statistics at finite matrix dimension. For this purpose we derive the joint probability density of the singular values, the skew-orthogonal polynomials and the kernels for the $k$-point correlation functions. The skew-orthogonal polynomials are constructed by the method of mixing bi-orthogonal and skew-orthogonal polynomials, which is an alternative approach to Mehta's one. We compare our results with Monte Carlo simulations and study the limits to chGUE and GUE. As a side product we also calculate a new type of a unitary group integral.

Symmetry Transition Preserving Chirality in QCD: A Versatile Random Matrix Model

We consider a random matrix model which interpolates between the chiral Gaussian unitary ensemble and the Gaussian unitary ensemble while preserving chiral symmetry. This ensemble describes flavor symmetry breaking for staggered fermions in 3d QCD as well as in 4d QCD at high temperature or in 3d QCD at finite isospin chemical potential. Our model is an Osborn-type two-matrix model which is equivalent to the elliptic ensemble but we consider the singular value statistics rather than the complex eigenvalue statistics. We report on exact results for the partition function and the microscopic level density of the Dirac operator in the $\varepsilon$-regime of QCD. We compare these analytical results with Monte Carlo simulations of the matrix model.

Multiplicative Convolution of Real Asymmetric and Real Antisymmetric Matrices

The singular values of products of standard complex Gaussian random matrices, or sub-blocks of Haar distributed unitary matrices, have the property that their probability distribution has an explicit, structured form referred to as a polynomial ensemble. It is furthermore the case that the corresponding bi-orthogonal system can be determined in terms of Meijer G-functions, and the correlation kernel given as an explicit double contour integral. It has recently been shown that the Hermitised product $X_M \cdots X_2 X_1A X_1^T X_2^T \cdots X_M^T$, where each $X_i$ is a standard real complex Gaussian matrix, and $A$ is real anti-symmetric shares exhibits analogous properties. Here we use the theory of spherical functions and transforms to present a theory which, for even dimensions, includes these properties of the latter product as a special case. As an example we show that the theory also allows for a treatment of this class of Hermitised product when the $X_i$ are chosen as sub-blocks of Haar distributed real orthogonal matrices.

Additive Matrix Convolutions of Pólya Ensembles and Polynomial Ensembles

Recently subclasses of polynomial ensembles for additive and multiplicative matrix convolutions were identified which were called Pólya ensembles (or polynomial ensembles of derivative type). Those ensembles are closed under the respective convolutions and, thus, build a semi-group when adding by hand a unit element. They even have a semi-group action on the polynomial ensembles. Moreover in several works transformations of the bi-orthogonal functions and kernels of a given polynomial ensemble were derived when performing an additive or multiplicative matrix convolution with particular Pólya ensembles. For the multiplicative matrix convolution on the complex square matrices the transformations were even done for general Pólya ensembles. In the present work we generalize these results to the additive convolution on Hermitian matrices, on Hermitian anti-symmetric matrices, on Hermitian anti-self-dual matrices and on rectangular complex matrices. For this purpose we derive the bi-orthogonal functions and the corresponding kernel for a general Pólya ensemble which was not done before. With the help of these results we find transformation formulas for the convolution with a fixed matrix or a random matrix drawn from a general polynomial ensemble. As an example we consider Pólya ensembles with an associated weight which is a Pólya frequency function of infinite order. But we also explicitly evaluate the Gaussian unitary ensemble as well as the complex Laguerre (aka Wishart, Ginibre or chiral Gaussian unitary) ensemble. All results hold for finite matrix dimension. Furthermore we derive a recursive relation between Toeplitz determinants which appears as a by-product of our results.

Chiral condensate and Dirac spectrum of one- and two-flavor QCD at nonzero $θ$-angle

In the $ε$-domain of QCD we have obtained exact analytical expressions for the eigenvalue density of the Dirac operator at fixed $θ\ne 0$ for both one and two flavors. These results made it possible to explain how the different contributions to the spectral density conspire to give a chiral condensate at fixed $θ$ that does not change sign when the quark mass (or one of the quark masses for two flavors) crosses the imaginary axis, while the chiral condensate at fixed topological charge does change sign. From QCD at nonzero density we have learnt that the discontinuity of the chiral condensate may move to a different location when the spectral density increases exponentially with the volume with oscillations on the order of the inverse volume. This is indeed what happens when the product of the quark masses becomes negative, but the situation is more subtle in this case: the contribution of the "quenched" part of the spectral density diverges in the thermodynamic limit at nonzero $θ$, but this divergence is canceled exactly by the contribution from the zero modes. We conclude that the zero modes are essential for the continuity of the chiral condensate and that their contribution has to be perfectly balanced against the contribution from the nonzero modes. Lattice simulations at nonzero $θ$-angle can only be trusted if this is indeed the case.

Global Symmetries of Naive and Staggered Fermions in Arbitrary Dimensions

It is well-known that staggered fermions do not necessarily satisfy the same global symmetries as the continuum theory. We analyze the mechanism behind this phenomenon for arbitrary dimension and gauge group representation. For this purpose we vary the number of lattice sites between even and odd parity in each single direction. Since the global symmetries are manifest in the lowest eigenvalues of the Dirac operator, the spectral statistics and also the symmetry breaking pattern will be affected. We analyze these effects and compare our predictions with Monte-Carlo simulations of naive Dirac operators in the strong coupling limit.

Products of Random Matrices from Polynomial Ensembles

Very recently we have shown that the spherical transform is a convenient tool for studying the relation between the joint density of the singular values and that of the eigenvalues for bi-unitarily invariant random matrices. In the present work we discuss the implications of these results for products of random matrices. In particular, we derive a transformation formula for the joint densities of a product of two independent bi-unitarily invariant random matrices, the first from a polynomial ensemble and the second from a polynomial ensemble of derivative type. This allows us to re-derive and generalize a number of recent results in random matrix theory, including a transformation formula for the kernels of the corresponding determinantal point processes. Starting from these results, we construct a continuous family of random matrix ensembles interpolating between the products of different numbers of Ginibre matrices and inverse Ginibre matrices. Furthermore, we make contact to the asymptotic distribution of the Lyapunov exponents of the products of a large number of bi-unitarily invariant random matrices of fixed dimension.

Asymptotic Coincidence of the Statistics for Degenerate and Non-Degenerate Correlated Real Wishart Ensembles

The correlated Wishart model provides the standard benchmark when analyzing time series of any kind. Unfortunately, the real case, which is the most relevant one in applications, poses serious challenges for analytical calculations. Often these challenges are due to square root singularities which cannot be handled using common random matrix techniques. We present a new way to tackle this issue. Using supersymmetry, we carry out an anlaytical study which we support by numerical simulations. For large but finite matrix dimensions, we show that statistical properties of the fully correlated real Wishart model generically approach those of a correlated real Wishart model with doubled matrix dimensions and doubly degenerate empirical eigenvalues. This holds for the local and global spectral statistics. With Monte Carlo simulations we show that this is even approximately true for small matrix dimensions. We explicitly investigate the $k$-point correlation function as well as the distribution of the largest eigenvalue for which we find a surprisingly compact formula in the doubly degenerate case. Moreover we show that on the local scale the $k$-point correlation function exhibits the sine and the Airy kernel in the bulk and at the soft edges, respectively. We also address the positions and the fluctuations of the possible outliers in the data.

Shift of Symmetries of Naive Fermions in QCD-like Lattice Theories

We study the global symmetries of naive lattices Dirac operators in QCD-like theories in any dimension larger than two. In particular we investigate how the chosen number of lattice sites in each direction affects the global symmetries of the Dirac operator. These symmetries are important since they do not only determine the infra-red spectrum of the Dirac operator but also the symmetry breaking pattern and, thus, the lightest pseudo-scalar mesons. We perform the symmetry analysis and discuss the possible zero modes and the degree of degeneracy of the lattice Dirac operators. Moreover we explicitly identify a "reduced" lattice Dirac operator which is the naive Dirac operator apart from the degeneracy. We verify our predictions by comparing Monte Carlo simulations of QCD-like theories in the strong coupling limit with the corresponding random matrix theories.

Spectral correlation functions of the sum of two independent complex Wishart matrices with unequal covariances

We compute the spectral statistics of the sum H of two independent complex Wishart matrices, each of which is correlated with a different covariance matrix. Random matrix theory enjoys many applications including sums and products of random matrices. Typically ensembles with correlations among the matrix elements are much more difficult to solve. Using a combination of supersymmetry, superbosonisation and bi-orthogonal functions we are able to determine all spectral k-point density correlation functions of H for arbitrary matrix size N. In the half-degenerate case, when one of the covariance matrices is proportional to the identity, the recent results by Kumar for the joint eigenvalue distribution of H serve as our starting point. In this case the ensemble has a bi-orthogonal structure and we explicitly determine its kernel, providing its exact solution for finite N. The kernel follows from computing the expectation value of a single characteristic polynomial. In the general non-degenerate case the generating function for the k-point resolvent is determined from a supersymmetric evaluation of the expectation value of k ratios of characteristic polynomials. Numerical simulations illustrate our findings for the spectral density at finite N and we also give indications how to do the asymptotic large-N analysis.

Exact Relation between Singular Value and Eigenvalue Statistics

We use classical results from harmonic analysis on matrix spaces to investigate the relation between the joint density of the singular values and of the eigenvalues of complex random matrices which are bi-unitarily invariant (also known as isotropic or unitary rotation invariant). We prove that one of these joint densities determines the other one. Moreover we construct an explicit formula relating both joint densities at finite matrix dimension. This relation covers probability densities as well as signed densities. With the help of this relation we derive general analytical relations among the corresponding kernels and biorthogonal functions for a specific class of polynomial ensembles. Furthermore we show how to generalize the relation between the eigenvalue and singular value statistics to certain situations when the ensemble is deformed by a term which breaks the bi-unitary invariance.

Phase Diagram of Dynamical Twisted Mass Wilson Fermions at Finite Isospin Chemical Potential

We consider the phase diagram of twisted mass Wilson fermions of two-flavor QCD in the parameter space of the quark mass, the isospin chemical potential, the twist angle and the lattice spacing. This work extends earlier studies in the continuum and those at zero chemical potential. We evaluate the phase diagram as well as the spectrum of the (pseudo-)Goldstone bosons using the chiral Lagrangian for twisted mass Wilson fermions at non-zero isospin chemical potential. The phases are obtained from a mean field analysis. At zero twist angle we find that already an infinitesimal isospin chemical potential destroys the Aoki phase. The reason is that in this phase we have massless Goldstone bosons with a non-zero isospin charge. At finite twist angle only two different phases are present, one phase which is continuously connected to the Bose condensed phase at non-zero chemical potential and another phase which is continuously connected to the normal phase. For either zero or maximal twist the phase diagram is more complicated as the saddle point equations allow for more solutions.

The Smallest Eigenvalue Distribution in the Real Wishart-Laguerre Ensemble with Even Topology

We consider rectangular random matrices of size $p\times n$ belonging to the real Wishart-Laguerre ensemble also known as the chiral Gaussian orthogonal ensemble. This ensemble appears in many applications like QCD, mesoscopic physics, and time series analysis. We are particularly interested in the distribution of the smallest non-zero eigenvalue and the gap probability to find no eigenvalue in an interval $[0,t]$. While for odd topology $ν=n-p$ explicit closed results are known for finite and infinite matrix size, for even $ν>2$ only recursive expressions in $p$ are available. The smallest eigenvalue distribution as well as the gap probability for general even $ν$ is equivalent to expectation values of characteristic polynomials raised to a half-integer. The computation of such averages is done via a combination of skew-orthogonal polynomials and bosonisation methods. The results are given in terms of Pfaffian determinants both at finite $p$ and in the hard edge scaling limit ($p\to\infty$ and $ν$ fixed) for an arbitrary even topology $ν$. Numerical simulations for the correlated Wishart ensemble illustrate the universality of our results in this particular limit. These simulations point to a validity of the hard edge scaling limit beyond the invariant case.

Discretization effects in $N_c=2$ QCD and Random Matrix Theory

We summarize the analytical solution of the Chiral Perturbation Theory for the Hermitian Wilson Dirac operator of $N_c=2$ QCD with quarks in the fundamental representation. Results have been obtained for the quenched microscopic spectral density, the distribution of the chiralities over the real modes and the chiral condensate. The analytical results are compared with results from a Monte Carlo simulation of the corresponding Random Matrix Theory.
