DNN predictions for pp reference $p_\mathrm{T}$ spectra at unmeasured $\sqrt{s}$

Studies of the properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma in high-energy heavy-ion collisions commonly facilitate proton-proton (pp) collisions at the same center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair as a reference measurement. In this paper, a deep neural network-based approach for interpolating and extrapolating pp reference transverse-momentum spectra to unmeasured energies is presented. The model is trained with ALICE data from LHC Runs 1 and 2 and provides predictions for center-of-mass energies relevant to LHC Run 3 and beyond.

Machine Learning Power Week 2023: Clustering in Hadronic Calorimeters

In both high-energy physics and industry applications, a crowd-sourced approach to difficult problems is becoming increasingly common. These innovative approaches are ideal for the development of future facilities where the simulations can be publicly distributed, such as the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). In this paper, we discuss a so-called ``Power Week" where graduate students were able to learn about machine learning while also contributing to an unsolved problem at a future facility. Here, the problem of interest was the clustering of the forward hadronic calorimeter in the foreseen electron-proton/ion collider experiment (ePIC) detector at the EIC. The different possible approaches, developed over the course of a single week, and their performance are detailed and summarised. Feedback on the format of the week and recommendations for future similar programs are provided in the hopes to inspire future learning opportunities for students that also serve as a crowd-sourced approaches to unsolved problems.

Particle production as a function of system size and underlying-event activity measured with ALICE at the LHC

High-energy collisions in ALICE allow for the study of soft and hard QCD particle production. The correlation between transverse momentum spectra and event multiplicity is a sensitive observable providing insights into the different production mechanisms. In these proceedings we report on this observable for unidentified charged-particles, obtained using a 2d-unfolding procedure. Particle production is compared at different collision energies, as well as for pp, p--Pb and Pb--Pb collisions at the same energy. In order to understand the role of autocorrelations in small systems, it was proposed to exploit the usage of the underlying event as a multiplicity estimator to factorize the hardest and the softer components of the events. For this purpose, in these proceedings the charged particle transverse momentum distributions are also presented as a function of underlying-event activity in pp collisions.

Bayesian unfolding of charged particle $p_{\mathrm{T}} $ spectra with ALICE at the LHC

The study of the Quark-Gluon Plasma created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions at the CERN-LHC is complemented by reference measurements in proton-lead (p--Pb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions, where the effects of multiple-parton interactions and hadronization beyond independent string fragmentation can be investigated. In these proceedings, we present a Bayesian unfolding procedure to reconstruct the correlation between transverse momentum ($ p_{\mathrm{T}}$) spectra of charged particles and the corresponding charged-particle multiplicities $N_{\mathrm{ch}}$. The unfolded spectra are presented in single multiplicity ($ΔN_{\mathrm{ch}}$ = 1) bins and are used to derive moments of the $p_{\mathrm{T}} $ distributions. We illustrate the unfolding procedure of the $ p_{\mathrm{T}} $ spectra with a Monte Carlo simulation for pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{\mathrm{s}}= 5.02$ TeV.
