The Instrumented Baffle at the Input Mode Cleaner of Advanced Virgo Plus: Four years of Successful Operation as a Monitor of Stray Light

The suspended end mirror of the input mode cleaner cavity in the Advanced Virgo Plus interferometer was equipped with an instrumented baffle in spring 2021, serving as a demonstrator of the technology in preparation for the installation of large instrumented baffles in the main arms of the interferometer. This baffle includes tens of sensors positioned near the mirror to enable monitoring of stray light within the cavity. In this contribution, we assess the performance and stability of the instrument after four years of operation. After introducing the main characteristics of the baffle, we study the distribution of stray light and show that the instrumented baffle can be used to monitor laser stability and alignment within the cavity. Finally, we assess the noise level during the final stages of the O4b commissioning to monitor the impact of the baffle, and conclude that the baffle does not introduce any additional disturbance to the normal operation of the interferometer.

Search for Peak Structures in the Stochastic Gravitational-Wave Background in LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA O1-O4a Datasets

We present a dedicated search for gravitational-wave backgrounds with nontrivial peak structures using data from the first three and the initial part of the fourth observing runs of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA network. The analysis is motivated by a variety of early-Universe models characterized by signals with multiple peaks. We introduce a model independent parameterization of double-peaked spectra based on the superposition of two normalized broken power laws and perform a Bayesian inference study using the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA isotropic cross-correlation data. While no statistically significant evidence for a multi-peak background is found, the analysis provides constraints on the inter-peak slopes in correlation with the signal amplitude. These results exhibit LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA's ability to probe signals beyond a single peak structure and establish a foundation for future targeted searches for nontrivial gravitational waves background spectral shapes in future observing runs and the advanced detector era.

First constraints on compact binary environments from LIGO-Virgo data

The LIGO-Virgo analyses of signals from compact binary mergers observed so far have assumed isolated binary systems in a vacuum, neglecting the potential presence of astrophysical environments. We present here the first investigation of environmental effects on each of the events of GWTC-1 and two low-mass events from GWTC-2. We find no evidence for the presence of environmental effects. Most of the events decisively exclude the scenario of dynamical fragmentation of massive stars as their formation channel. GW170817 results in the most stringent upper bound on the medium density ($\lesssim 21\,\mathrm{g/cm^3}$). We find that environmental effects can substantially bias the recovered parameters in the vacuum model, even when these effects are not detectable. We forecast that the Einstein Telescope and B-DECIGO will be able to probe the environmental effects of accretion disks and superradiant boson clouds on compact binaries.

Detection of Early-Universe Gravitational Wave Signatures and Fundamental Physics

Detection of a gravitational-wave signal of non-astrophysical origin would be a landmark discovery, potentially providing a significant clue to some of our most basic, big-picture scientific questions about the Universe. In this white paper, we survey the leading early-Universe mechanisms that may produce a detectable signal -- including inflation, phase transitions, topological defects, as well as primordial black holes -- and highlight the connections to fundamental physics. We review the complementarity with collider searches for new physics, and multimessenger probes of the large-scale structure of the Universe.

Quantum gravity phenomenology at the dawn of the multi-messenger era -- A review

The exploration of the universe has recently entered a new era thanks to the multi-messenger paradigm, characterized by a continuous increase in the quantity and quality of experimental data that is obtained by the detection of the various cosmic messengers (photons, neutrinos, cosmic rays and gravitational waves) from numerous origins. They give us information about their sources in the universe and the properties of the intergalactic medium. Moreover, multi-messenger astronomy opens up the possibility to search for phenomenological signatures of quantum gravity. On the one hand, the most energetic events allow us to test our physical theories at energy regimes which are not directly accessible in accelerators; on the other hand, tiny effects in the propagation of very high energy particles could be amplified by cosmological distances. After decades of merely theoretical investigations, the possibility of obtaining phenomenological indications of Planck-scale effects is a revolutionary step in the quest for a quantum theory of gravity, but it requires cooperation between different communities of physicists (both theoretical and experimental). This review is aimed at promoting this cooperation by giving a state-of-the art account of the interdisciplinary expertise that is needed in the effective search of quantum gravity footprints in the production, propagation and detection of cosmic messengers.

Search for a scalar induced stochastic gravitational wave background in the third LIGO-Virgo observing run

Formation of primordial black holes from inflationary fluctuations is accompanied by a scalar induced gravitational wave background. We perform a Bayesian search of such background in the data from Advanced LIGO and Virgo's first, second and third observing runs, parametrizing the peak in the curvature power spectrum by a log-normal distribution. The search shows no evidence for such a background. We place 95\% confidence level upper limits on the integrated power of the curvature power spectrum peak which, for a narrow width, reaches down to $0.02$ at $10^{17}\,{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$. The resulting constraints are stronger than those arising from BBN or CMB observations. In addition, we find that LIGO and Virgo, at its design sensitivity, and the Einstein Telescope can compete with the constraints related to the abundance of the formed primordial black holes.

Search for new phenomena in events with a monojet and large missing transverse momentum at the LHC using the ATLAS detector

We report preliminary results on a search for new phenomena in an event sample with monojets and large missing transverse momentum in the final state. The analysis uses 1.00 fb-1 of data collected in 2011 with the ATLAS detector. Good agreement is observed between the number of events in data and the Standard Model predictions. The results are translated into improved limits on a model with Large Extra Dimensions.

Improved squark and gluino mass limits from searches for supersymmetry at hadron colliders

Squarks and gluinos have been searched for at hadron colliders in events with multiple jets and missing transverse energy. No excess has been observed to date, and from a comparison of experimental cross section limits and theoretical cross section predictions one can deduce lower bounds on the squark and gluino masses. We present an improved analysis of squark and gluino mass bounds which is based on state-of-the-art cross section calculations including the summation of large threshold corrections. For illustration, we consider experimental data obtained by the CDF collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron and discuss the impact of the improved cross section predictions on the squark and gluino mass limits.
