A positive lower bound for $\liminf_{N\to\infty} \prod_{r=1}^N \left| 2\sin πr φ\right|$

Nearly 60 years ago, Erdős and Szekeres raised the question of whether $$\liminf_{N\to \infty} \prod_{r=1}^N \left| 2\sin πr α\right| =0$$ for all irrationals $α$. Despite its simple formulation, the question has remained unanswered. It was shown by Lubinsky in 1999 that the answer is yes if $α$ has unbounded continued fraction coefficients, and it was suggested that the answer is yes in general. However, we show in this paper that for the golden ratio $φ=(\sqrt{5}-1)/2$, $$\liminf_{N\to \infty} \prod_{r=1}^N \left| 2\sin πr φ\right| >0 ,$$ providing a negative answer to this long-standing open problem.

On the order of magnitude of Sudler products II

We study the asymptotic behavior of Sudler products $P_N(α)= \prod_{r=1}^{N}2|\sin πrα|$ for quadratic irrationals $α\in \mathbb{R}$. In particular, we verify the convergence of certain perturbed Sudler products along subsequences, and show that $\liminf_N P_N(α) = 0$ and $\limsup_N P_N(α)/N = \infty$ whenever the maximal digit in the continued fraction expansion of $α$ exceeds $23$. This generalizes results obtained for the period one case $α=[0; \overline{a}]$.

On the asymptotic behavior of Sudler products along subsequences

Let $α\in (0,1)$ and irrational. We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of sequences of certain trigonometric products (Sudler products) $(P_N(α))_{N\in\mathbb{N}}$ with $$P_N(α) =\prod_{r=1}^N|2\sin(πr α)|.$$ More precisely, we are interested in the asymptotic behaviour of subsequences of the form $(P_{q_n(α)}(α))_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$, where $q_n(α)$ is the $n$th best approximation denominator of $α$. Interesting upper and lower bounds for the growth of these subsequences are given, and convergence results, obtained by Mestel and Verschueren (see arXiv:1411.2252math[DS]) and Grepstad and Neumüller (see arXiv:1801.09416[math.NT]), are generalized to the case of irrationals with bounded continued fraction coefficients.

On the asymptotic behaviour of the sine product $\prod_{r=1}^n|2\sin(πr α)|$

In this paper we review recently established results on the asymptotic behaviour of the trigonometric product $P_n(α) = \prod_{r=1}^n |2\sin πr α|$ as $n\to \infty$. We focus on irrationals $α$ whose continued fraction coefficients are bounded. Our main goal is to illustrate that when discussing the regularity of $P_n(α)$, not only the boundedness of the coefficients plays a role; also their size, as well as the structure of the continued fraction expansion of $α$, is important.

Metrical star discrepancy bounds for lacunary subsequences of digital Kronecker-sequences and polynomial tractability

The star discrepancy $D_N^*(\mathcal{P})$ is a quantitative measure for the irregularity of distribution of a finite point set $\mathcal{P}$ in the multi-dimensional unit cube which is intimately related to the integration error of quasi-Monte Carlo algorithms. It is known that for every integer $N \ge 2$ there are point sets $\mathcal{P}$ in $[0,1)^d$ with $|\mathcal{P}|=N$ and $D_N^*(\mathcal{P}) =O((\log N)^{d-1}/N)$. However, for small $N$ compared to the dimension $d$ this asymptotically excellent bound is useless (e.g. for $N \le {\rm e}^{d-1}$). In 2001 it has been shown by Heinrich, Novak, Wasilkowski and Woźniakowski that for every integer $N \ge 2$ there exist point sets $\mathcal{P}$ in $[0,1)^d$ with $|\mathcal{P}|=N$ and $D_N^*(\mathcal{P}) \le C \sqrt{d/N}$. Although not optimal in an asymptotic sense in $N$, this upper bound has a much better (and even optimal) dependence on the dimension $d$. Unfortunately the result by Heinrich et al. and also later variants thereof by other authors are pure existence results and until now no explicit construction of point sets with the above properties are known. Quite recently Löbbe studied lacunary subsequences of Kronecker's $(n \boldsymbolα)$-sequence and showed a metrical discrepancy bound of the form $C \sqrt{d (\log d)/N}$ with implied absolute constant $C>0$ independent of $N$ and $d$. In this paper we show a corresponding result for digital Kronecker sequences, which are a non-archimedean analog of classical Kronecker sequences.

Asymptotic behaviour of the Sudler product of sines for quadratic irrationals

We study the asymptotic behaviour of the sequence of sine products $P_n(α) = \prod_{r=1}^n |2\sin πr α|$ for real quadratic irrationals $α$. In particular, we study the subsequence $Q_n(α)=\prod_{r=1}^{q_n} |2\sin πr α|$, where $q_n$ is the $n$th best approximation denominator of $α$, and show that this subsequence converges to a periodic sequence whose period equals that of the continued fraction expansion of $α$. This verifies a conjecture recently posed by Mestel and Verschueren.

A reduced fast construction of polynomial lattice point sets with low weighted star discrepancy

The weighted star discrepancy is a quantitative measure for the performance of point sets in quasi-Monte Carlo algorithms for numerical integration. We consider polynomial lattice point sets, whose generating vectors can be obtained by a component-by-component construction to ensure a small weighted star discre-pancy. Our aim is to significantly reduce the construction cost of such generating vectors by restricting the size of the set of polynomials from which we select the components of the vectors. To gain this reduction we exploit the fact that the weights of the spaces we consider decay very fast.
