Incremental universality of Wigner random matrices

Properties of universality have essential relevance for the theory of random matrices usually called the Wigner ensemble. The issue was analysed up to recent years with detailed and relevant results. We present a slightly different view and compare the large-$n$ limit of connected correlators of distinct ensembles: universality has steps or degrees, precisely counted by the number of probability moments of the matrix entries, which match among distinct ensembles.

A random matrix model for the density of states of jammed soft spheres with applied stress

We investigate the addition of applied stress to a random block matrix model introduced by Parisi to study the Hessian matrix of soft spheres near the jamming point. In the infinite dimensional limit the applied stress translates the spectral distribution to the left, leading to a stability constraint. With negative stress, as in the case of a random network of stretched elastic springs, the spectral distribution is translated to the right, and the density of states has a peak before the plateau.

Sparse Random Block Matrices : universality

We study ensembles of sparse random block matrices generated from the adjacency matrix of a Erdös-Renyi random graph with $N$ vertices of average degree $Z$, inserting a real symmetric $d \times d$ random block at each non-vanishing entry. We consider some ensembles of random block matrices with rank $r < d$ and with maximal rank, $r=d$. The spectral moments of the sparse random block matrix are evaluated for $N \to \infty$, $d$ finite or infinite, and several probability distributions for the blocks (e.g. fixed trace, bounded trace and Gaussian). Because of the concentration of the probability measure in the $d \to \infty$ limit, the spectral moments are independent of the probability measure of the blocks (with mild assumptions of isotropy, smoothness and sub-gaussian tails). The Effective Medium Approximation is the limiting spectral density of the sparse random block ensembles with finite rank. Analogous classes of universality hold for the Laplacian sparse block ensemble. The same limiting distributions are obtained using random regular graphs instead of Erdös-Renyi graphs.

Sparse Random Block Matrices

The spectral moments of ensembles of sparse random block matrices are analytically evaluated in the limit of large order. The structure of the sparse matrix corresponds to the Erdös-Renyi random graph. The blocks are i.i.d. random matrices of the classical ensembles GOE or GUE. The moments are evaluated for finite or infinite dimension of the blocks. The correspondences between sets of closed walks on trees and classes of irreducible partitions studied in free probability together with functional relations are powerful tools for analytic evaluation of the limiting moments. They are helpful to identify probability laws for the blocks and limits of the parameters which allow the evaluation of all the spectral moments and of the spectral density.

Noncrossing partition flow and random matrix models

We study a generating function flowing from the one enumerating a set of partitions to the one enumerating the corresponding set of noncrossing partitions; numerical simulations indicate that its limit in the Adjacency random matrix model on bipartite Erdös-Renyi graphs gives a good approximation of the spectral distribution for large average degrees. This model and a Wishart-type random matrix model are described using congruence classes on $k$-divisible partitions. We compute, in the $d\to \infty$ limit with $\frac{Z_a}{d}$ fixed, the spectral distribution of an Adjacency and of a Laplacian random block matrix model, on bipartite Erdös-Renyi graphs and on bipartite biregular graphs with degrees $Z_1, Z_2$; the former is the approximation previously mentioned; the latter is a mean field approximation of the Hessian of a random bipartite biregular elastic network; it is characterized by an isostatic line and a transition line between the one- and the two-band regions.

Mean-field density of states of a small-world model and a jammed soft spheres model

We consider a class of random block matrix models in $d$ dimensions, $d \ge 1$, motivated by the study of the vibrational density of states (DOS) of soft spheres near the isostatic point. The contact networks of average degree $Z = z_0 + ζ$ are represented by random $z_0$-regular graphs (only the circle graph in $d=1$ with $z_0=2$) to which Erdös-Renyi graphs having a small average degree $ζ$ are superimposed. In the case $d=1$, for $ζ$ small the shifted Kesten-McKay DOS with parameter $Z$ is a mean-field solution for the DOS. Numerical simulations in the $z_0=2$ model, which is the $k=1$ Newman-Watts small-world model, and in the $z_0=3$ model lead us to conjecture that for $ζ\to 0$ the cumulative function of the DOS converges uniformly to that of the shifted Kesten-McKay DOS, in an interval $[0, ω_0]$, with $ω_0 < \sqrt{z_0-1} + 1$. For $2 \le d \le 4$, we introduce a cutoff parameter $K_d \le 0.5$ modeling sphere repulsion. The case $K_d=0$ is the random elastic network case, with the DOS close to the Marchenko-Pastur DOS with parameter $t=\frac{Z}{d}$. For $K_d$ large the DOS is close for small $ω$ to the shifted Kesten-McKay DOS with parameter $t=\frac{Z}{d}$; in the isostatic case the DOS has around $ω=0$ the expected plateau. The boson peak frequency in $d=3$ with $K_3$ large is close to the one found in molecular dynamics simulations for $Z=7$ and $8$.

Proof of a conjecture on the infinite dimension limit of a unifying model for random matrix theory

We study the large $N$ limit of a sparse random block matrix ensemble. It depends on two parameters: the average connectivity $Z$ and the size of the blocks $d$, which is the dimension of an euclidean space. In the limit of large $d$, with $\frac{Z}{d}$ fixed, we prove the conjecture that the spectral distribution of the sparse random block matrix converges in the case of the Adjacency block matrix to the one of the effective medium approximation, in the case of the Laplacian block matrix to the Marchenko-Pastur distribution. We extend previous analytical computations of the moments of the spectral density of the Adjacency block matrix and the Lagrangian block matrix, valid for all values of $Z$ and $d$.

New results on the constants in some inequalities for the Navier-Stokes quadratic nonlinearity

We give fully explicit upper and lower bounds for the constants in two known inequalities related to the quadratic nonlinearity of the incompressible (Euler or) Navier-Stokes equations on the torus T^d. These inequalities are "tame" generalizations (in the sense of Nash-Moser) of the ones analyzed in the previous works [Morosi and Pizzocchero: CPAA 2012, Appl.Math.Lett. 2013].

Large order Reynolds expansions for the Navier-Stokes equations

We consider the Cauchy problem for the incompressible homogeneous Navier-Stokes (NS) equations on a d-dimensional torus, in the C^infinity formulation described, e.g., in [25]. In [22][25] it was shown how to obtain quantitative estimates on the exact solution of the NS Cauchy problem via the "a posteriori" analysis of an approximate solution; such estimates concern the interval of existence of the exact solution and its distance from the approximate solution. In the present paper we consider an approximate solutions of the NS Cauchy problem having the form u^N(t) = sum_{j=0}^N R^j u_j(t), where R is the "mathematical" Reynolds number (the reciprocal of the kinematic viscosity) and the coefficients u_j(t) are determined stipulating that the NS equations be satisfied up to an error O(R^{N+1}). This subject was already treated in [24], where, as an application, the Reynolds expansion of order N=5 in dimension d=3 was considered for the initial datum of Behr-Necas-Wu (BNW). In the present paper, these results are enriched regarding both the theoretical analysis and the applications. Concerning the theoretical aspect, we refine the approach of [24] following [25] and use the symmetries of the initial datum in building up the expansion. Concerning the applicative aspect we consider two more (d=3) initial data, namely, the vortices of Taylor-Green (TG) and Kida-Murakami (KM); the Reynolds expansions for the BNW, TG and KM data are performed via a Python program, attaining orders between N=12 and N=20. Our a posteriori analysis proves, amongst else, that the solution of the NS equations with anyone of the above three data is global if R is below an explicitly computed critical value. Our critical Reynolds numbers are below the ones characterizing the turbulent regime; however these bounds have a sound theoretical support, are fully quantitative and improve previous results of global existence.

A posteriori estimates for Euler and Navier-Stokes equations

The first two sections of this work review the framework of [6] for approximate solutions of the incompressible Euler or Navier-Stokes (NS) equations on a torus T^d, in a Sobolev setting. This approach starts from an approximate solution u_a of the Euler/NS Cauchy problem and, analyzing it a posteriori, produces estimates on the interval of existence of the exact solution u and on the distance between u and u_a. The next two sections present an application to the Euler Cauchy problem, where u_a is a Taylor polynomial in the time variable t; a special attention is devoted to the case d=3, with an initial datum for which Behr, Necas and Wu have conjectured a finite time blowup [1]. These sections combine the general approach of [6] with the computer algebra methods developed in [9]; choosing the Behr-Necas-Wu datum, and using for u_a a Taylor polynomial of order 52, a rigorous lower bound is derived on the interval of existence of the exact solution u, and an estimate is obtained for the H^3 Sobolev distance between u(t) and u_a(t).

Higher order expansions for the entropy of a dimer or a monomer-dimer system on d-dimensional lattices

Recently an expansion as a power series in 1/d has been presented for the specific entropy of a complete dimer covering of a d-dimensional hypercubic lattice. This paper extends from 3 to 10 the number of terms known in the series. Likewise an expansion for the entropy, dependent on the dimer-density p, of a monomer-dimer system, involving a sum sum_k a_k(d) p^k, has been recently offered. We herein extend the number of the known expansion coefficients from 6 to 20 for the hyper-cubic lattices of general dimension d and from 6 to 24 for the hyper-cubic lattices of dimensions d < 5 . We show that this extension can lead to accurate numerical estimates of the p-dependent entropy for lattices with dimension d > 2. The computations of this paper have led us to make the following marvelous conjecture: "In the case of the hyper-cubic lattices, all the expansion coefficients, a_k(d), are positive"! This paper results from a simple melding of two disparate research programs: one computing to high orders the Mayer series coefficients of a dimer gas, the other studying the development of entropy from these coefficients. An effort is made to make this paper self-contained by including a review of the earlier works.

Yang-Lee edge singularities from extended activity expansions of the dimer density for bipartite lattices of dimensionality 2 <= d <= 7

We have extended, in most cases through 24th order, the series expansions of the dimer density in powers of the activity in the case of bipartite ((hyper)-simple-cubic and (hyper)-body-centered-cubic) lattices of dimensionalities 2<= d <= 7. A numerical analysis of these data yields estimates of the exponents characterizing the Yang-Lee edge-singularities for lattice ferromagnetic spin-models as d varies between the lower and the upper critical dimensionalities. Our results are consistent with, but more extensive and sometimes more accurate than those obtained from the existing dimer series or from the estimates of related exponents for lattice animals, branched polymers and fluids. We mention also that it is possible to obtain estimates of the dimer constants from our series for the various lattices.

On power series solutions for the Euler equation, and the Behr-Necas-Wu initial datum

We consider the Euler equation for an incompressible fluid on a three dimensional torus, and the construction of its solution as a power series in time. We point out some general facts on this subject, from convergence issues for the power series to the role of symmetries of the initial datum. We then turn the attention to a paper by Behr, Necas and Wu in ESAIM: M2AN 35 (2001) 229-238; here, the authors chose a very simple Fourier polynomial as an initial datum for the Euler equation and analyzed the power series in time for the solution, determining the first 35 terms by computer algebra. Their calculations suggested for the series a finite convergence radius τ_3 in the H^3 Sobolev space, with 0.32 < τ_3 < 0.35; they regarded this as an indication that the solution of the Euler equation blows up. We have repeated the calculations of Behr, Necas and Wu, using again computer algebra; the order has been increased from 35 to 52, using the symmetries of the initial datum to speed up computations. As for τ_3, our results agree with the original computations of Behr, Necas and Wu (yielding in fact to conjecture that 0.32 < τ_3 < 0.33). Moreover, our analysis supports the following conclusions: (a) The finiteness of τ_3 is not at all an indication of a possible blow-up. (b) There is a strong indication that the solution of the Euler equation does not blow up at a time close to τ_3. In fact, the solution is likely to exist, at least, up to a time θ_3 > 0.47. (c) Pade' analysis gives a rather weak indication that the solution might blow up at a later time.

Triviality problem and the high-temperature expansions of the higher susceptibilities for the Ising and the scalar field models on four-, five- and six-dimensional lattices

High-temperature expansions are presently the only viable approach to the numerical calculation of the higher susceptibilities for the spin and the scalar-field models on high-dimensional lattices. The critical amplitudes of these quantities enter into a sequence of universal amplitude-ratios which determine the critical equation of state. We have obtained a substantial extension through order 24, of the high-temperature expansions of the free energy (in presence of a magnetic field) for the Ising models with spin s >= 1/2 and for the lattice scalar field theory with quartic self-interaction, on the simple-cubic and the body-centered-cubic lattices in four, five and six spatial dimensions. A numerical analysis of the higher susceptibilities obtained from these expansions, yields results consistent with the widely accepted ideas, based on the renormalization group and the constructive approach to Euclidean quantum field theory, concerning the no-interaction ("triviality") property of the continuum (scaling) limit of spin-s Ising and lattice scalar-field models at and above the upper critical dimensionality.

The one-loop effective action of noncommutative {\cal N}=4 super Yang-Mills is gauge invariant

We study the gauge transformation of the recently computed one-loop four-point function of {\cal N}=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with gauge group U(N). The contributions from nonplanar diagrams are not gauge invariant. We compute their gauge variation and show that it is cancelled by the variation from corresponding terms of the one-loop five-point function. This mechanism is general: it insures the gauge invariance of the noncommutative one-loop effective action.

Chiral invariance and lattice fermions with minimal doubling

A few years ago some attention has been given to a fermionic action on the lattice, with a Wilson-like term which is chirally invariant but breaks the hypercubic space-time lattice symmetry. This action describes two Dirac fields in the continuum limit, provided the coefficient $λ$ of the Wilson-like term satisfies $λ> \frac{1}{2}$. In this letter it is shown that for $\frac{1}{2} < λ\leq 1$ the theory is link-reflection positive. The propagator has the expected real energy poles. Modulo a phase shift on the fermions, the only relevant terms which can be added to the action respecting its symmetries have dimension $4$.
