Bose Condensation and Temperature

A quantitative analysis of the process of condensation of bosons both in harmonic traps and in gases is made resorting to two ingredients only: Bose classical distribution and spectral discretness. It is shown that in order to take properly into account statistical correlations, temperature must be defined from first principles, based on Shannon entropy, and turns out to be equal to $β^{-1}$ only for $T > T_c$ where the usual results are recovered. Below $T_c$ a new critical temperature $T_d$ is found, where the specific heat exhibits a sharp spike, similar to the $λ$-peak of superfluidity.

Bosons and Environment

The role of background in bosonic quantum statistics is discussed in the frame of a new approach in terms of coherent states. Bosons are indeed detected in different physical situations where they exhibit different and apparently unconnected properties. Besides Bose gas we consider bosons in particle physics and bosons in harmonic traps. In particle physics bosons are dealt with in a context where the number of observed particles is finite: here the relevant features are the canonical commutation relations, which we shall show to be related to a Boltzmann-like distribution. A further case is Bose condensate in harmonic traps, where discrete spectrum leads us to predict, below T_c, a new critical temperature. The unified approach proposed shows that all defferences can be ascribed to the environment.

Discrete Spectrum in Bose Condensation

A quantitative description of the whole process of condensation of bosons in an harmonic trap is given resorting only to Gibbs and Bose postulates, without assuming equipartition nor continuum statistics. Below Tc discrete spectrum theory predicts for the thermo-dynamical variables a behavior different from the continuum case. In particular a new critical temperature is found where the specific heat exhibits a lambda-like spike. Numerical values of the relevant quantities depend on the experimental set-up. The theory does not take into account collective effects in the ground state.

Holonomic Quantum Computation

We show that the notion of generalized Berry phase i.e., non-abelian holonomy, can be used for enabling quantum computation. The computational space is realized by a $n$-fold degenerate eigenspace of a family of Hamiltonians parametrized by a manifold $\cal M$. The point of $\cal M$ represents classical configuration of control fields and, for multi-partite systems, couplings between subsystem. Adiabatic loops in the control $\cal M$ induce non trivial unitary transformations on the computational space. For a generic system it is shown that this mechanism allows for universal quantum computation by composing a generic pair of loops in $\cal M.$

Non-Abelian Berry connections for quantum computation

In the holonomic approach to quantum computation information is encoded in a degenerate eigenspace of a parametric family of Hamiltonians and manipulated by the associated holonomic gates. These are realized in terms of the non-abelian Berry connection and are obtained by driving the control parameters along adiabatic loops. We show how it is possible, for a specific model, to explicitly determine the loops generating any desired logical gate, thus producing a universal set of unitary transformations. In a multi-partite system unitary transformations can be implemented efficiently by sequences of local holonomic gates. Moreover a conceptual scheme for obtaining the required Hamiltonian family, based on frequently repeated pulses, is discussed, together with a possible process whereby the initial state can be prepared and the final one can be measured.

2+1 Dimensional Quantum Gravity as a Gaussian Fermionic System and the 3D-Ising Model

We show that 2+1-dimensional Euclidean quantum gravity is equivalent, under some mild topological assumptions, to a Gaussian fermionic system. In particular, for manifolds topologically equivalent to $Σ_g\times\RrR$ with $Σ_g$ a closed and oriented Riemann surface of genus $g$, the corresponding 2+1-dimensional Euclidean quantum gravity may be related to the 3D-lattice Ising model before its thermodynamic limit.
