Sensitivity of the photon-induced processes to the proton charge radius

We study the exclusive production of dileptons in proton--proton collisions as a probe of the proton charge-radius scale. Using a dipole form factor model, we compare the conventional choice of $Λ^2=0.71$~GeV$^2$ with PDG test scenarios corresponding to $r_p=0.8751 \pm 0.0061$~fm and $r_p=0.84087 \pm 0.00039$~fm, representative of the historical large-radius from CODATA and smaller-radius from muonic-hydrogen determinations, respectively. The sensitivity is greatest at large dilepton invariant masses and forward/backward rapidity. Fitting to the current ATLAS and CMS data within the adopted model gives $Λ^2 = 0.465 \pm 0.056~\mathrm{GeV}^2$, corresponding to an effective radius $r_p = 1.002 \pm 0.038~\mathrm{fm}$, which indicates non-trivial sensitivity on the proton radius scale, but is not yet a definitive solution to the proton radius puzzle. While this result depends on the theoretical model used in the calculation, it shows that exclusive dilepton production at LHC can provide complementary model-dependent information on the proton electromagnetic forms factor.

From photons to dikaon -- theoretical insights into $K^+K^-$ production in nuclear collisions

The production of charged kaon pairs in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions can proceed via photoproduction (gamma-Pomeron interaction) or via photon-photon fusion. An important contribution to this process arises from the decays of scalar, tensor and vector mesons. This study provides a consistent description of K+K- production at both the elementary level (gamma gamma -> meson -> K+K-) and the nuclear level (Pb Pb -> Pb Pb K+K-). The gamma gamma fusion cross section is compared with experimental results from Belle, TPC/Two-Gamma and ARGUS. A comparison with existing midrapidity measurements is presented, together with theoretical predictions for ultraperipheral Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 5.02 TeV.

Light-by-Light scattering in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions: Estimating inelastic contributions

The current state-of-the-art theoretical estimations lead to cross-sections for $AA \to γγAA$ which are somewhat smaller than the measured ones by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations, which motivates the searching and calculation of subleading corrections disregarded in these previous studies. In this paper, we estimate for the first time the contribution of inelastic channels to the Light-by-Light (LbL) scattering in ultraperipheral collisions of heavy ions (UPHICs), in which one or both of the incident nuclei dissociate ($A A \to γγX Y$ where $X, Y = A, A'$) due to the photon emission. These new mechanisms are related to extra emissions that are rather difficult to identify at the LHC and may be misinterpreted as enhanced $γγ\to γγ$ scattering compared to the Standard Model result. We include processes of coupling of photons to individual nucleons (protons and neutrons) in addition to coherent coupling to the whole nuclei (called standard approach here). Both elastic (nucleon in the ground state) and inelastic (nucleon in an excited state) in the couplings of photons to nucleons are taken into account. The inelastic nucleon fluxes are calculated using CT18qed photon in nucleon PDFs. The inelastic photon fluxes are shown and compared to standard photon fluxes in the nucleus. In addition, we show the ratio of the inelastic corrections to the standard contribution as a function of diphoton invariant mass and photon rapidity difference. We find that for the ATLAS acceptance region the inelastic corrections grow with $M_{γγ}$ and rapidity difference. Our results indicate that the inelastic contributions can be of the order of 20-40 \% of the traditional (no nuclear excitation) predictions. Uncertainties due to factorization scale choice are quantified.

Neutron emission associated with $γγ\toγγ$ scattering in UPC of heavy ions at the LHC

We calculate cross sections for the production of different neutron classes $0n 0n$, $0nXn+Xn0n$ and $Xn Xn$, possible to measure in Zero Degree Calorimeters (ZDCs), associated with photon-photon scattering in UPC of lead on lead. The calculations are performed for the ATLAS kinematics. Our calculations for neutron classes are tested against existing data for $ρ^0$ production in UPC. We get a good agreement for absolute cross section as well as very good results for fractional cross section which gives confidence to the analogous calculation for diphoton production, corresponding to $γγ\to γγ$ scattering. We present both absolute as well as fractional cross sections for the different neutron classes. We also show different distributions in impact parameter, photon rapidity, transverse momentum, diphoton invariant mass and photon rapidity difference. The shapes of the photon distributions depend on the neutron classes which we quantify in this paper. It would be valuable to test our predictions using the ATLAS main detector and the ATLAS ZDCs.

Neutron emission from the photon-induced reactions in ultraperipheral ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions

The ultraperipheral collisions are the source of various interesting phenomena based on photon-induced reactions. We calculate cross sections for single and any number of n, p, $α$, $γ$-rays in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collision for LHC energies. We analyze the production of a given number of neutrons relevant for a recent ALICE experiment, for $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02~TeV. In our approach, we include both single and multiple photon exchanges as well as the fact that not all photon energies are used in the process of equilibration of the residual nucleus. We propose a simple two-component model in which only part of photon energy $E_γ$ is changed into the excitation energy of the nucleus ($E_{exc} \neq E_γ$) and compare its results with outcomes of HIPSE and EMPIRE codes. The role of high photon energies for small neutron multiplicities is discussed. Emission of a small number of neutrons at high photon energies seems to be crucial to understand the new ALICE data. All effects work in the desired direction, but the description of the cross section of four- and five-neutron emission cross sections from first principles is rather demanding. The estimated emission of charged particles such as protons, deuterons and $α$ is shortly discussed and confronted with very recent ALICE data, obtained with the proton Zero Degree Calorimeter.

The sensitivity to BSM in di-taon production at the LHC

We discuss the sensitivity of the $γγ\to τ^+τ^-$ process in ultraperipheral Pb+Pb collisions at LHC energies on the anomalous magnetic moment of $τ$ lepton ($a_τ$). We derive the corresponding cross sections considering semi-leptonic decays of both leptons in the fiducial volume of ATLAS and CMS detectors. The expected limits on $a_τ$ with the existing Pb+Pb dataset are found to be better by a factor of two comparing to current best experimental limits and can be further improved by another factor of two at High Luminosity LHC. In addition, our results for tau lepton electric dipole moment, $d_τ$, can be competitive with the current best limits that were obtained by the Belle experiment.

Anomalous electromagnetic moments of $τ$ lepton in $γγ\to τ^+ τ^-$ reaction in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC

We discuss the sensitivity of the $γγ\to τ^+ τ^-$ process in ultraperipheral Pb+Pb collisions on the anomalous magnetic ($a_τ$) and electric ($d_τ$) moments of $τ$ lepton at LHC energies. We derive the corresponding cross sections by folding the elementary cross section with the heavy-ion photon fluxes and considering semi-leptonic decays of both $τ$ leptons in the fiducial volume of ATLAS and CMS detectors. We present predictions for total and differential cross sections, and for the ratios to $γγ\to e^+ e^- (μ^+ μ^-$) process. These ratios allow to cancel theoretical and experimental uncertainties when performing precision measurement of $a_τ$ at the LHC. The expected limits on $a_τ$ with existing Pb+Pb dataset are found to be better by a factor of two comparing to current best experimental limits and can be further improved by another factor of two at High Luminosity LHC.

Exclusive four-pion photoproduction in ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies

We study the photoproduction of exclusive $2π^+2π^-$ mesons in ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. Predictions in photon-nucleus interactions are calculated for various resonances at central and forward rapidities. The recent H1 preliminary data are utilized to improve the description of the poorly known $γp \to 4π^\pm p$ process. We present the comparisons of our results to the available STAR data at RHIC, and made predictions for LHC energies.

Light-by-light scattering in ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions at low diphoton masses

We present a study of photon-photon scattering in the mass range $W_{γγ} < 5$ GeV. We extend earlier calculations of this cross section for $W_{γγ}>$ 5 GeV into the low mass range where photoproduction of the pseudoscalar resonances $η$, $η^{'}(958)$ contributes to two-photon final states. We present the elementary photon-photon cross section as a function of diphoton mass $M_{γγ}$ arising from lepton and quark loop diagrams, and the visible cross section obtained with the gamma-gamma decay branching fractions of the resonances $η$, $η^{'}(958)$, $η_c(1S)$, $η_c(2S)$, $χ_{c0}(1P)$. We derive the corresponding cross sections in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV by folding the elementary cross section with the heavy-ion photon fluxes. We consider the dominating background of the two-photon final state which arises from gamma decays of photoproduced $π^{0}$-pairs. Such $π^{0}$-pairs contribute to the background when only two of the four decay photons are within the experimental acceptance, while the other two photons escape undetected. We reduce this background by applying cuts on asymmetries of transverse momenta of the two photons and indicate how the background can be further suppressed using a multivariate sideband analysis. We present the cross section for the signal and the background at midrapidity $|η| <$ 0.9, and in the forward rapidity range 2.0 $< η<$ 4.5.

Photon-photon scattering in the resonance region at midrapidity at the LHC

A study is presented to extend the measurements of photon-photon scattering in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC into the mass region of the pseudoscalar resonances $η$ and $η'$. The elementary photon-photon scattering cross section is presented. The cross section for photon-photon scattering in Pb-Pb is derived by convoluting the elementary photon-photon cross section with the Pb-Pb photon luminosity. The main background to two-photon final states, arising from double $π^{0}$ production with two of the four decay photons escaping detection, is examined, and possible kinematical conditions are discussed to optimize the signal-to-background ratio for such measurements at mid-rapidity.

Dilepton Radiation in Heavy-Ion Collisions at Small Transverse Momentum

We study the invariant-mass distributions of dileptons produced in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions at very low pair transverse momenta, $P_T\leq 0.15$ GeV. Specifically, we investigate the interplay of thermal radiation with initial photon annihilation processes, $γγ\to l^+ l^-$, triggered by the coherent electromagnetic fields of the incoming nuclei. For the thermal radiation, we employ the emission from the QGP and hadronic phases with in-medium vector spectral functions which describes the inclusive excess radiation observed over a wide range of collision energies. For the coherent photon fusion processes, whose spectrum is much softer than for thermal radiation, we employ initial fluxes from the Fourier transform of charge distributions of the colliding nuclei in the equivalent-photon approximation. We first verify that the combination of photon fusion, thermal radiation and final-state hadron decays gives a fair description of the low-$P_T$ dilepton mass spectra as recently measured by the STAR collaboration in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200 GeV Au+Au collisions for different centrality classes, including experimental acceptance cuts. The coherent contribution dominates in peripheral collisions, while thermal radiation shows a markedly stronger increase with centrality. We perform similar calculations at lower collision energies ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=17.3 GeV) and compare to the acceptance-corrected dimuon excess spectra measured by the NA60 experiment at the CERN SPS; here, the contribution from photoproduction is subleading. We also provide predictions for the ALICE experiment at the LHC; the pertinent excitation function from SPS to LHC energies reveals a nontrivial interplay of photoproduction and thermal radiation.

Importance of mesons in light-by-light scattering in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions at the LHC

Possibility of PbPb$\to$PbPb$γγ$ measurement at smaller (< 5 GeV) diphoton invariant mass will be presented. Analysis focuses only on ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions. This estimate shows that the $γγ\to γγ$ collisions can be measured at the LHC by ALICE and LHCb experiments for diphoton invariant mass $>$ 2 GeV. Predictions for the $γγ\to η, η' \to γγ$ resonance scattering shows that these resonances can be measured with rather good statistics. A~possible observation of peaks related to intermediate $η$, $η'(958)$, $η_c(1S)$, $η_c(2S)$, $χ_{c0}(1P)$ mesons will be presented too. Attempts of reduction of background which comes from dipion production will be considered.

$γγ\to γγ$ scattering in ultrarelativistic UPC

We discuss diphoton semi(exclusive) production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions at energy of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.5 TeV (LHC) and in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s_{pp}}$ = 7 TeV (LHC) and $\sqrt{s_{pp}}$ = 100 TeV (FCC). The nuclear calculations are based on equivalent photon approximation in the impact parameter space. The cross sections for elementary $γγ\to γγ$ subprocess are calculated including three different mechanisms: box diagrams with leptons and quarks in the loops, a VDM-Regge contribution with virtual intermediate hadronic excitations of the photons and the two-gluon exchange contribution. We get relatively high cross sections in heavy ion collisions. This opens a possibility to study the light-by-light (quasi)elastic scattering at the LHC. We find that the cross section for elastic $γγ$ scattering could be measured in the lead-lead collisions for the diphoton invariant mass up to $W_{γγ} \approx$ 15 - 20 GeV. Our Standard Model predictions are compared to a recent ATLAS experimental result. We present differential distributions for PbPb$\to$PbPb$γγ$ and pp$\to$pp$γγ$ reaction.

New theoretical results in ultrarelativistic ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions

We study dilepton, proton-antiproton and diphoton production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 and 5.5 TeV. The nuclear calculations are based on equivalent photon approximation in the impact parameter space. For correct description of the $γγ\to p\bar{p} $ Belle data we include the proton-exchange, the $f_2(1270)$ and $f_2(1950)$ s-channel exchanges, as well as the handbag mechanism. For four muon production, we take into account electromagnetic (two-photon) double-scattering production and direct $γγ$ production of four muons in one scattering. Double scattering production of two positron-electron pairs in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions

We present first measurable predictions for electromagnetic (two-photon) double scattering production of two positron-electron pairs in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions at LHC. Measureable cross sections are obtained with realistic cuts on electron/positron (pseudo)rapidities and transverse momenta for the ALICE and ATLAS or CMS experiments. The predictions for total and differential cross sections are presented. We show also two-dimensional distributions in rapidities of the opposite-sign (from the same or different subcollisions) and of the same-sign ($e^+ e^+$ or $e^- e^-$) electrons and in rapidity distance between them. Expected number of events are presented and discussed. Our calculations strongly suggest that relevant measurements with the help of ATLAS, CMS and ALICE detectors are possible in a near future.
