Women for Quantum -- Manifesto of Values

Data show that the presence of women in quantum science is affected by a number of detriments and their percentage decreases even further for higher positions. Beyond data, from our shared personal experiences as female tenured quantum physics professors, we believe that the current model of scientific leadership, funding, and authority fails to represent many of us. It is time for a real change that calls for a different kind of force and for the participation of everyone. Women for quantum calls for a joint effort and aims with this initiative to contribute to such a transformation.

Heat rectification, heat fluxes, and spectral matching

Heat rectifiers would facilitate energy management operations such as cooling, or energy harvesting, but devices of practical interest are still missing. Understanding heat rectification at a fundamental level is key to help us find or design such devices. The match or mismatch of the phonon band spectrum of device segments for forward or reverse temperature bias of the thermal baths at device boundaries, was proposed as the mechanism behind rectification. However no explicit, theoretical relation derived from first principles had been found so far between heat fluxes and spectral matching. We study heat rectification in a minimalistic chain of two coupled ions. The fluxes and rectification can be calculated analytically. We propose a definition of the matching that sets an upper bound for the heat flux. In a regime where the device rectifies optimally, matching and flux ratios for forward and reverse configurations are found to be proportional. The results can be extended to a system of N particles in arbitrary traps with nearest-neighbor linear interactions.

Dynamically induced heat rectification in quantum systems

Heat rectifiers are systems that conduct heat asymmetrically for forward and reversed temperature gradients. Here, we present an analytical study of heat rectification in linear quantum systems. We demonstrate that asymmetric heat currents can be induced in a linear system only if it is dynamically driven. The rectification can be further enhanced, even achieving maximal performance, by detuning the oscillators of the driven network. Finally, we demonstrate the feasibility of such driven harmonic network to work as a thermal transistor, quantifying its efficiency through the dynamical amplification factor.

Trapped ion chain as a neural network

We demonstrate the possibility of realizing a neural network in a chain of trapped ions with induced long range interactions. Such models permit to store information distributed over the whole system. The storage capacity of such network, which depends on the phonon spectrum of the system, can be controlled by changing the external trapping potential and/or by applying longitudinal local magnetic fields. The system properties suggest the possibility of implementing robust distributed realizations of quantum logic.

Disordered complex systems using cold gases and trapped ions

We report our research on disordered complex systems using cold gases and trapped ions, and address the possibility of using complex systems for quantum information processing. Two simple paradigmatic models of disordered complex systems are revisited here. The first one corresponds to a short range disordered Ising Hamiltonian (spin glasses), which can be implemented with a Bose-Fermi (Bose-Bose) mixture in a disordered optical lattice. The second model we address here is a long range disordered Hamiltonian, characteristic of neural networks (Hopfield model), which can be implemented in a chain of trapped ions with appropriately designed interactions.
