Shearless curve breakup in the biquadratic nontwist map

Nontwist area-preserving maps violate the twist condition along shearless invariant curves, which act as transport barriers in phase space. Recently, some plasma models have presented multiple shearless curves in phase space and these curves can break up independently. In this paper, we describe the different shearless curve breakup scenarios of the so-called biquadratic nontwist map, a recently proposed area-preserving map derived from a plasma model, that captures the essential behavior of systems with multiple shearless curves. Three different scenarios are found and their dependence on the system parameters is analyzed. The results indicate a relation between shearless curve breakup and periodic orbit reconnection-collision sequences. In addition, even after a shearless curve breakup, the remaining curves inhibit global transport.

Symplectic Maps for Diverted Plasmas

Nowadays, divertors are used in the main tokamaks to control the magnetic field and to improve the plasma confinement. In this article, we present analytical symplectic maps describing Poincaré maps of the magnetic field lines in confined plasmas with a single null poloidal divertor. Initially, we present a divertor map and the tokamap for a diverted configuration. We also introduce the Ullmann map for a diverted plasma, whose control parameters are determined from tokamak experiments. Finally, an explicit, area-preserving and integrable magnetic field line map for a single-null divertor tokamak is obtained using a trajectory integration method to represent toroidal equilibrium magnetic surfaces. In this method, we also give examples of onset of chaotic field lines at the plasma edge due to resonant perturbations.

Escape patterns due to ergodic magnetic limiters in tokamaks with reversed magnetic shear

In this work we study the ergodic magnetic limiters (EML) action on field lines from the point of view of a chaotic scattering process, considering the so-called exit basins, or sets of points in the chaotic region which originate field lines hitting the wall in some specified region. We divide the tokamak wall into three areas of equal poloidal angular length, corresponding to different exits for a chaotic field line. In order to obtain the exit basins we used a fine grid chosen inside a small rectangle which comprises a representative part of the chaotic region near the wall. Thus, exit basins were obtained for a tokamak wall with reversed magnetic shear. The nontwist mapping describes the perturbed magnetic field lines with two twin chains of magnetic islands and chaotic field lines in their vicinity. For a perturbing resonant magnetic field with a fixed helicity, the observed escape pattern changes with the perturbation intensity.
