Stochastic partial differential equations arising in self-organized criticality

We study scaling limits of the weakly driven Zhang and the Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld (BTW) model for self-organized criticality. We show that the weakly driven Zhang model converges to a stochastic partial differential equation (PDE) with singular-degenerate diffusion. In addition, the deterministic BTW model is shown to converge to a singular-degenerate PDE. Alternatively, the proof of the scaling limit can be understood as a convergence proof of a finite-difference discretization for singular-degenerate stochastic PDEs. This extends recent work on finite difference approximation of (deterministic) quasilinear diffusion equations to discontinuous diffusion coefficients and stochastic PDEs. In addition, we perform numerical simulations illustrating key features of the considered models and the convergence to stochastic PDEs in spatial dimension $d=1,2$.

Well-posedness of SVI solutions to singular-degenerate stochastic porous media equations arising in self-organised criticality

We consider a class of generalised stochastic porous media equations with multiplicative Lipschitz continuous noise. These equations can be related to physical models exhibiting self-organised criticality. We show that these SPDEs have unique SVI solutions which depend continuously on the initial value. In order to formulate this notion of solution and to prove uniqueness in the case of a slowly growing nonlinearity, the arising energy functional is analysed in detail.

Ergodicity for singular-degenerate porous media equations

The long time behaviour of solutions to generalised stochastic porous media equations on bounded domains with Dirichlet boundary data is studied. We focus on a degenerate form of nonlinearity arising in self-organised criticality. Based on the so-called lower-bound method, the existence and uniqueness of an invariant measure is proved.
