Moduli spaces for linear differential equations and the Painlevé equations

In this paper, we give a systematic construction of ten isomonodromic families of connections of rank two on $\mathbb{P}^1$ inducing Painlevé equations. The classification of ten families is given by considering the Riemann-Hilbert morphism from a moduli space of connections with certain type of regular and irregular singularities to a corresponding catetorical moduli space of analytic data (i.e., ordinary monodromy, Stokes matrices and links), which is called the monodromy space. Explicit equations of the monodromy spaces for ten families are calculated. Moreover, we obtain natural explicit families of connections for these ten cases and calculate isomonodromic equations which give Painlevé equations of all types.

Ruled quartic surfaces, models and classification

New historical aspects of the classification, by Cayley and Cremona, of ruled quartic surfaces and the relation to string models and plaster models are presented. In a `modern' treatment of the classification of ruled quartic surfaces the classical one is corrected and completed. A conceptual proof is presented of a result of Rohn concerning curves in $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$ of bi-degree $(2,2)$. The string models of Series XIII (of some ruled quartic surfaces) are based on Rohn's result.

A local-global problem for linear differential equations

An inhomogeneous linear differential equation Ly=f over a global differential field can have a formal solution for each place without having a global solution. The vector space lgl(L) measures this phenomenon. This space is interpreted in terms of cohomology of linear algebraic groups and is computed for abelian differential equations and for regular singular equations. An analogue of Artin reciprocity for abelian differential equations is given. Malgrange's work on irregularity is reproved in terms of cohomology of linear algebraic groups.

Analytic $q$-difference equations

This paper describes the classification of analytic $q$-difference equations. The difference Galois groups are computed. A tentative description of the universal difference Galois group is given.

Galois theory of q-difference equations

Choose $q\in {\mathbb C}$ with 0<|q|<1. The main theme of this paper is the study of linear q-difference equations over the field K of germs of meromorphic functions at 0. It turns out that a difference module M over K induces in a functorial way a vector bundle v(M) on the Tate curve $E_q:={\mathbb C}^*/q^{\mathbb Z}$. As a corollary one rediscovers Atiyah's classification of the indecomposable vector bundles on the complex Tate curve. Linear q-difference equations are also studied in positive characteristic in order to derive Atiyah's results for elliptic curves for which the j-invariant is not algebraic over ${\mathbb F}_p$. A universal difference ring and a universal formal difference Galois group are introduced. Part of the difference Galois group has an interpretation as `Stokes matrices', the above moduli space is the algebraic tool to compute it. It is possible to provide the vector bundle v(M) on E_q, corresponding to a difference module M over K, with a connection $\nabla_M$. If M is regular singular, then $\nabla_M$ is essentially determined by the absense of singularities and `unit circle monodromy'. More precisely, the monodromy of the connection $(v(M),\nabla_M)$ coincides with the action of two topological generators of the universal regular singular difference Galois group. For irregular difference modules, $\nabla_M$ will have singularities and there are various Tannakian choices for $M\mapsto (v(M),\nabla_M)$. Explicit computations are difficult, especially for the case of non integer slopes.
