Coherence properties of spinor condensates at finite temperatures

We consider a spinor condensate of 87Rb atoms in its F=1 hyperfine state at finite temperatures. Putting initially all atoms in m_F=0 component we find that the system evolves into the state of thermal equilibrium. This state is approached in a step-like process and when established it manifests itself in distinguishable ways. The atoms in states m_F=+1 and m_F=-1 start to rotate in opposite directions breaking the chiral symmetry and showing highly regular spin textures. Also the coherence properties of the system changes dramatically. Depending on the strength of spin-changing collisions the system first enters the stage where the m_F=+1 and m_F=-1 spinor condensate components periodically loose and recover their mutual coherence whereas their thermal counterparts get completely dephased. For stronger spin changing collisions the system enters the regime where also the strong coherence between other components is built up.

From a nonlinear string to a weakly interacting Bose gas

We investigate a real scalar field whose dynamics is governed by a nonlinear wave equation. We show that classical description can be applied to a quantum system of many interacting bosons provided that some quantum ingredients are included. An universal action has to be introduced in order to define particle number. The value of this action should be equal to the Planck constant. This constrain can be imposed by removing high frequency modes from the dynamics by introducing a cut-off. We show that the position of the cut-off has to be carefully adjusted. Finally, we show the proper choice of the cut-off ensures that all low frequency eigenenmodes which are taken into account are macroscopically occupied.

Superfluidity of the BEC at finite temperature

We use the classical fields approximation to study a translational flow of the condensate with respect to the thermal cloud in a weakly interacting Bose gas. We study both, subcritical and supercritical relative velocity cases and analyze in detail a state of stationary flow which is reached in the dynamics. This state corresponds to the thermal equilibrium, which is characterized by the relative velocity of the condensate and the thermal cloud. The superfluidity manifests itself in the existence of many thermal equilibria varying in (the value of this velocity) the relative velocity between the condensate and the thermal cloud. We pay a particular attention to excitation spectra in a phonon as well as in a particle regime. Finally, we introduce a measure of the amount of the superfluid fraction in a weakly interacting Bose gas, allowing for the precise distinction between the superfluid and the condensed fractions in a single and consistent framework.

Formation of soliton trains in Bose-Einstein condensates by temporal Talbot effect

We study the recent observation of formation of matter-wave soliton trains in Bose-Einstein condensates. We emphasize the role of the box-like confinement of the Bose-Einstein condensate and find that there exist time intervals for the opening the box that support the generation of real solitons. When the box-like potential is switched off outside the existing time windows, the number of peaks in a train changes resembling missing solitons observed in the experiment. Our findings indicate that a new way of generating soliton trains in condensates through the temporal, matter-wave Talbot effect is possible.

Classical fields approximation for cold weakly interacting bosons without free parameters

Classical fields approximation to cold weakly interacting bosons allows for a unified treatment of condensed and uncondensed parts of the system. Until now, however, the quantitative predictions were limited by a dependence of the results on a grid chosen for numerical implementation of the method. In this paper we propose replacing this unphysical ambiguity by an additional postulate: the temperature of the gas at thermal equilibrium should be the same as that of an ideal Bose gas with the same fraction of condensed atoms. As it turns-out, with this additional assumption, nearly all atoms are within the classical fields, thus the method applies to the whole system.

Temperature dependent Bogoliubov approximation in the classical fields approach to weakly interacting Bose gas

A classical fields approximation to the finite temperature microcanonical thermodynamics of weakly interacting Bose gas is applied to the idealized case of atoms confined in a box with periodic boundary conditions. We analyze in some detail the microcanonical temperature in the model. We also analyze the spectral properties of classical amplitudes of the plane waves -- the eigenmodes of the time averaged one--particle density matrix. Looking at the zero momentum component -- the order parameter of the condensate, we obtain the nonperturbative results for the chemical potential. Analogous analysis of the other modes yields nonperturbative temperature dependent Bogoliubov frequencies and their damping rates. Damping rates are linear functions of momenta in the phonon range and show more complex behavior for the particle sector. Where available, we make comparison with the analytic estimates of these quantities.

Exact versus mean-field description of the Bose-Einstein condensate: a model study

We study a system of trapped bosonic particles interacting by model harmonic forces. Our model allows for detailed examination of the notion of an order parameter (a condensate wave function). By decomposing a single particle density matrix into coherent eigenmodes we study an effect of interaction on the condensate. We show that sufficiently strong interactions cause that the condensate disappears even if the whole system is in its lowest energy state. In the second part of our paper we discuss the validity of the Bogoliubov approximation by comparing its predictions with results inferred from the exactl y soluble model. In particular we examine an energy spectrum, occupation, and fluctuations of the condensate. We conclude that Bogoliubov approach gives quite accurate description of the system in the limit of weak interactions.

Destruction of Bose-Einstein condensate by strong interactions

We study exactly soluble system of trapped bosonic particles interacting by a model harmonic forces. The model allows for detailed examination of the order parameter (condensate wave function) as well as concept of the off-diagonal and diagonal order. We analyze the effect of interactions on the condensate and show that sufficiently strong interactions, attractive or repulsive, lead to destruction of the condensate. In the thermodynamic limit this destruction has a critical character. It is shown that the existence of the coherent state of bosons is related to existence of two length scales determined by one- and two-particle reduced density matrices. The condensate can exist only if the two length scales are of the same order. Interactions, both repulsive and attractive, change their relative size which may lead to destruction of coherence in the system and depletion of the condensate. We suggest that this scenario is model independent.
