Intersection forms, topology of maps and motivic decomposition for maps of threefolds

This paper has two aims. The former is to give an introduction to our earlier work on the Hodge theory of algebraic maps and more generally to some of the main themes of the theory of perverse sheaves and to some of its geometric applications. Particular emphasis is put on the topological properties of algebraic maps. The latter is to prove a motivic version of the decomposition theorem for the resolution of a threefold Y. This result allows to define a pure motive whose Betti realization is the intersection cohomology of Y. We provide a few explicit computations of perverse truncations and intersection cohomology complexes which we could not find in the literature and which may be helpful to understand the machinery. We discuss in detail the case of surfaces, threefolds and fourfolds. In the surface case, our "intersection forms" version of the decomposition theorem stems quite naturally from two well-known and widely used theorems on surfaces, the Grauert contractibility criterion for curves on a surface and the so called Zariski Lemma.

The Hodge theory of algebraic maps

We give a geometric proof of the Decomposition Theorem of Beilinson, Bernstein, Deligne and Gabber for the direct image of the intersection cohomology complex under a proper map of complex algebraic varieties. The method rests on new Hodge-theoretic results on the cohomology of projective varieties which extend naturally the classical theory and provide new applications.

The Chow motive of semismall resolutions

We consider proper, algebraic semismall maps f from a complex algebraic manifold X. We show that the topological Decomposition Theorem implies a "motivic" decomposition theorem for the rational algebraic cycles of X and, in the case X is compact, for the Chow motive of X.The result is a Chow-theoretic analogue of Borho-MacPherson's observation concerning the cohomology of the fibers and their relation to the relevant strata for f. Under suitable assumptions on the stratification, we prove an explicit version of the motivic decomposition theorem. The assumptions are fulfilled in many cases of interest, e.g. in connection with resolutions of orbifolds and of some configuration spaces. We compute the Chow motives and groups in some of these cases, e.g. the nested Hilbert schemes of points of a surface. In an appendix with T. Mochizuki, we do the same for the parabolic Hilbert scheme of points on a surface. The results above hold for mixed Hodge structures and explain, in some cases, the equality between orbifold Betti/Hodge numbers and ordinary Betti/Hodge numbers for the crepant semismall resolutions in terms of the existence of a natural map of mixed Hodge structures. Most results hold over an algebraically closed field and in the Kaehler context.

The Douady space of a complex surface

We prove that a standard realization of the direct image complex via the so-called Douady-Barlet morphism associated with a smooth complex analytic surface admits a natural decomposition in the form of an injective quasi-isomorphism of complexes. This is a more precise form of a special case of the decomposition theorems of Beilinson-Bernstein-Deligne-Gabber and M. Saito. The proof hinges on the special case of the bi-disk in the complex affine plane where we make explicit use of a construction of Nakajima's and of the corresponding representation-theoretic interpretation foreseen by Vafa-Witten. Some consequences of the decomposition theorem: Göttsche Formula holds for complex surfaces; interpretation of the rational cohomologies of Douady spaces as a kind of Fock space; new proofs of results of Briançon and Ellingsrud-Stromme on punctual Hilbert schemes; computation of the mixed Hodge structure of the Douady spaces in the Kähler case. We also derive a natural connection with Equivariant K-Theory for which, in the case of algebraic surfaces, Bezrukavnikov-Ginzburg have proposed a different approach.

Singular hermitian metrics on vector bundles

We introduce a notion of singular hermitian metrics (s.h.m.) for holomorphic vector bundles and define positivity in view of $L^2$-estimates. Associated with a suitably positive s.h.m. there is a (coherent) sheaf 0-th kernel of a certain $d''$-complex. We prove a vanishing theorem for the cohomology of this sheaf. All this generalizes to the case of higher rank known results of Nadel for the case of line bundles. We introduce a new semi-positivity notion, $t$-nefness, for vector bundles, establish some of its basic properties and prove that on curves it coincides with ordinary nefness. We particularize the results on s.h.m. to the case of vector bundles of the form $E=F \otimes L$, where $F$ is a $t$-nef vector bundle and $L$ is a positive (in the sense of currents) line bundle. As applications we generalize to the higher rank case 1) Kawamata-Viehweg Vanishing Theorem, 2) the effective results concerning the global generation of jets for the adjoint to powers of ample line bundles, and 3) Matsusaka Big Theorem made effective.

Effective nonvanishing, effective global generation

We prove a multiple-points higher-jets nonvanishing theorem by the use of local Seshadri constants. Applications are given to effectivity problems such as constructing rational and birational maps into Grassmannians, and the global generation of vector bundles.

Hilbert schemes of a surface and Euler characteristics

We use basic algebraic topology and Ellingsrud-Stromme results on the Betti numbers of punctual Hilbert schemes of surfaces to compute a generating function for the Euler characteristic numbers of the Douady spaces of "n-points" associated with a complex surface. The projective case was first proved by L. Göttsche.

The genus of curves on the three dimensional quadric

By means of an {\it ad hoc} modification of the so-called ``Castelnuovo-Harris analysis" we derive an upper bound for the genus of integral curves on the three dimensional nonsingular quadric which lie on an integral surface of degree $2k$, as a function of $k$ and the degree $d$ of the curve. In order to obtain this we revisit the Uniform Position Principle to make its use computation-free. The curves which achieve this bound can be conveniently characterized. A finiteness theorem for low-codimensional nonsingular subvarieties of quadrics

We prove that there are only finitely many families of codimension two nonsingular subvarieties of quadrics $\Q{n}$ which are not of general type, for $n=5$ and $n\geq 7$. We prove a similar statement also for the case of higher codimension. The case $n=6$ has been recently settled by Fania-Ottaviani. Some adjunction-theoretic properties of codimension two nonsingular subvarieties of quadrics

We make precise the structure of the first two reduction morphisms associated with codimension two nonsingular subvarieties of quadrics $\Q{n}$, $n\geq 5$. We give a coarse classification of the same class of subvarieties when they are assumed to be not of log-general-type.
