Meromorphic Group Actions and the Support Theorem for Lagrangian Fibrations

We prove several new results about Lagrangian fibrations on holomorphic symplectic complex spaces, under the assumption that the total space is Kähler (but possibly non-compact or singular) and that the base is a complex manifold. First, we construct a meromorphic action by a family of meromorphic groups. Second, we use this structure, together with Hodge-theoretic methods, to prove a version of Ngô's support theorem for Lagrangian fibrations. Along the way, we prove a freeness theorem for the cohomology of compact Kähler spaces equipped with a meromorphic group action.

Relative étale slices and cohomology of moduli spaces

We use techniques of Alper-Hall-Rydh to prove a local structure theorem for smooth morphisms between smooth stacks around points with linearly reductive stabilizers. This implies that the good moduli space of a smooth stack over a base has equisingular fibers. As an application, we show that any two fibers have isomorphic $\ell$-adic cohomology rings and intersection cohomology groups. If we work over the complex numbers, we show that the family is topologically locally trivial on the base, and that the intersection cohomology groups of the fibers fit into a polarizable variation of pure Hodge structures. We apply these results to derive some consequences for the moduli spaces of $G$-bundles on smooth projective curves, and for certain moduli spaces of sheaves on del Pezzo surfaces.

Hitchin fibrations are Ngô fibrations

We study the geometry of the Hitchin fibration for $\mathcal{L}$-valued $G$-Higgs bundles over a smooth projective curve of genus $g$, where $G$ is a reductive group and $\mathcal{L}$ is a suitably positive line bundle. We show that the Hitchin fibration admits the structure of a weak Abelian fibration. In the case when the line bundle $\mathcal{L}$ is a twist of the canonical bundle of the curve by a (possibly empty) reduced effective divisor, we prove a cohomological bound and $δ$-regularity of the weak Abelian fibration.

Logarithmic Non-Abelian Hodge Theory for curves in prime characteristic

For a curve C and a reductive group G in prime characteristic, we relate the de Rham moduli of logarithmic G-connections on C to the Dolbeault moduli of logarithmic G-Higgs bundles on the Frobenius twist of C. We name this result the Log-p-NAHT. It is a logarithmic version of Chen-Zhu's characteristic p Non Abelian Hodge Theorem (p-NAHT). In contrast to the no pole case, the two moduli stacks in the log case are not isomorphic etale locally over the Hitchin base. Instead, they differ by an Artin-Schreier type Galois cover of the base. In contrast to the case over the complex numbers, where some parabolic/parahoric data are needed to specify the boundary behavior of the tame harmonic metrics, no parabolic/parahoric data are needed in Log-p-NAHT. We also establish a semistable version of the Log-p-NAHT, and deduce several geometric and cohomological consequences. In particular, when G=GL_r, the Log-p-NAHT induces an embedding of the intersection cohomology of the degree d Dolbeault moduli to that of the degree pd de Rham moduli, and the embedding is an isomorphism when r is coprime to d and p>r.

Cohomology of the moduli of Higgs bundles via positive characteristic

For any two degrees coprime to the rank, we construct a family of ring isomorphisms parameterized by GSp(2g) between the cohomology of the moduli spaces of stable Higgs bundles which preserve the perverse filtrations. As consequences, we prove two structural results concerning the cohomology of Higgs moduli which are predicted by the P=W conjecture in non-abelian Hodge theory: (1) Galois conjugation for character varieties preserves the perverse filtrations for the corresponding Higgs moduli spaces. (2) The restriction of the Hodge-Tate decomposition for a character variety to each piece of the perverse filtration for the corresponding Higgs moduli space gives also a decomposition. Our proof uses reduction to positive characteristic and relies on the non-abelian Hodge correspondence in characteristic p between Dolbeault and de Rham moduli spaces.

Frobenius semisimplicity for convolution morphisms

This article concerns properties of mixed $\ell$-adic complexes on varieties over finite fields, related to the action of the Frobenius automorphism. We establish a fiberwise criterion for the semisimplicity and Frobenius semisimplicity of the direct image complex under a proper morphism of varieties over a finite field. We conjecture that the direct image of the intersection complex on the domain is always semisimple and Frobenius semisimple; this conjecture would imply that a strong form of the decomposition theorem of Beilinson-Bernstein-Deligne-Gabber is valid over finite fields. We prove our conjecture for (generalized) convolution morphisms associated with partial affine flag varieties for split connected reductive groups over finite fields, and we prove allied Frobenius semisimplicity results for the intersection cohomology groups of twisted products of Schubert varieties. We offer two proofs for these results: one is based on the paving by affine spaces of the fibers of certain convolution morphisms, the other involves a new schematic theory of "big cells" adapted to partial affine flag varieties, and combines Deligne's theory of weights with a suitable contracting $\mathbb G_m$-action on those big cells. Both proofs rely on our general result that the intersection complex of the image of a proper map of varieties over a finite field is a direct summand of the direct image of the intersection complex of the domain. With suitable reformulations, the main results are valid over any algebraically closed ground field.

Decomposition theorem for semi-simples

We use standard constructions in algebraic geometry and homological algebra to extend the decomposition and hard Lefschetz theorems of T. Mochizuki and C. Sabbah so that they remains valid without the quasi-projectivity assumptions.

Hodge-theoretic splitting mechanisms for projective maps (in appendix, a letter from P. Deligne)

According to the decomposition and relative hard Lefschetz theorems, given a projective map of complex quasi projective algebraic varieties and a relatively ample line bundle, the rational intersection cohomology groups of the domain of the map split into various direct summands. While the summands are canonical, the splitting is certainly not, as the choice of the line bundle yields at least three different splittings by means of three mechanisms in a triangulated category introduced by Deligne. It is known that these three choices yield splittings of mixed Hodge structures. In this paper, we use the relative hard Lefschetz theorem and elementary linear algebra to construct five distinct splittings, two of which seem to be new, and to prove that they are splittings of mixed Hodge structures.

Topology of Hitchin systems and Hodge theory of character varieties: the case A_1

For G = GL_2, PGL_2 and SL_2 we prove that the perverse filtration associated to the Hitchin map on the cohomology of the moduli space of twisted G-Higgs bundles on a Riemann surface C agrees with the weight filtration on the cohomology of the twisted G character variety of C, when the cohomologies are identified via non-Abelian Hodge theory. The proof is accomplished by means of a study of the topology of the Hitchin map over the locus of integral spectral curves.

The Hodge theory of character varieties

This is a report on joint work with T. Hausel and L. Migliorini, where we prove, for each of the groups GL(2,C), PGL(2,C), SL(2,C), that the non-Abelian Hodge theorem identifies the weight filtration on the cohomology of the character variety with the perverse Leray filtration on the cohomology of the domain of the Hitchin map. We review the decomposition theorem, Nĝo's support theorem, the geometric description of the perverse filtration and the sub-additivity of the Leray filtration with respect to the cup product.

The Decomposition Theorem and the topology of algebraic maps

We give a motivated introduction to the theory of perverse sheaves, culminating in the Decomposition Theorem of Beilinson, Bernstein, Deligne and Gabber. A goal of this survey is to show how the theory develops naturally from classical constructions used in the study of topological properties of algebraic varieties. While most proofs are omitted, we discuss several approaches to the Decomposition Theorem, indicate some important applications and examples.

Hodge-theoretic aspects of the Decomposition Theorem

Given a projective morphism of compact, complex, algebraic varieties and a relatively ample line bundle on the domain we prove that a suitable choice, dictated by the line bundle, of the decomposition isomorphism of the Decomposition Theorem of Beilinson, Bernstein, Deligne and Gabber, yields isomorphisms of pure Hodge structures. The proof is based on a new cohomological characterization of the decomposition isomorphism associated with the line bundle. We prove some corollaries concerning the intersection form in intersection cohomology, the natural map from cohomology to intersection cohomology, projectors and Hodge cycles, and induced morphisms in intersection cohomology.

The Hard Lefschetz Theorem and the topology of semismall maps

We introduce the notion of lef line bundles on a complex projective manifold. We prove that lef line bundles satisfy the Hard Lefschetz Theorem, the Lefschetz Decomposition and the Hodge-Riemann Bilinear Relations. We study proper holomorphic semismall maps from complex manifolds and prove that, for constant coefficients, the Decomposition Theorem is equivalent to the non-degeneracy of certain intersection forms. We give a proof of the Decomposition Theorem for the complex direct image of the constant sheaf when the domain and the target are projective by proving that the forms in question are non-degenerate. A new feature uncovered by our proof is that the forms are definite.
