Higher real K-theories and topological automorphic forms

Given a maximal finite subgroup G of the nth Morava stabilizer group at a prime p, we address the question: is the associated higher real K-theory EO_n a summand of the K(n)-localization of a TAF-spectrum associated to a unitary similitude group of type U(1,n-1)? We answer this question in the affirmative for p in {2, 3, 5, 7} and n = (p-1)p^{r-1} for a maximal finite subgroup containing an element of order p^r. We answer the question in the negative for all other odd primary cases. In all odd primary cases, we to give an explicit presentation of a global division algebra with involution in which the group G embeds unitarily.

The Goodwillie tower and the EHP sequence

We study the interaction between the EHP sequence and the Goodwillie tower of the identity evaluated at spheres at the prime 2. Both give rise to spectral sequences (the EHP spectral sequence and the Goodwillie spectral sequence, respectively) which compute the unstable homotopy groups of spheres. We relate the Goodwillie filtration to the P map, and the Goodwillie differentials to the H map. Furthermore, we study an iterated Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence approach to the homotopy of the layers of the Goodwillie tower of the identity on spheres. We show that differentials in these spectral sequences give rise to differentials in the EHP spectral sequence. We use our theory to re-compute the 2-primary unstable stems through the Toda range (up to the 19-stem). We also study the homological behavior of the interaction between the EHP sequence and the Goodwillie tower of the identity. This homological analysis involves the introduction of Dyer-Lashof-like operations associated to M. Ching's operad structure on the derivatives of the identity. These operations act on the mod 2 stable homology of the Goodwillie layers of any functor from spaces to spaces.

Topological automorphic forms on U(1,1)

The homotopy type and homotopy groups of some spectra TAF of topological automorphic forms associated to a unitary similitude group GU of type (1,1) are explicitly described in quasi-split cases. The spectrum TAF is shown to be closely related to the spectrum TMF in these cases, and homotopy groups of some of these spectra are explicitly computed.

The homotopy fixed point spectra of profinite Galois extensions

Let E be a k-local profinite G-Galois extension of an E_infty-ring spectrum A (in the sense of Rognes). We show that E may be regarded as producing a discrete G-spectrum. Also, we prove that if E is a profaithful k-local profinite extension which satisfies certain extra conditions, then the forward direction of Rognes's Galois correspondence extends to the profinite setting. We show the function spectrum F_A((E^hH)_k, (E^hK)_k) is equivalent to the homotopy fixed point spectrum ((E[[G/H]])^hK)_k where H and K are closed subgroups of G. Applications to Morava E-theory are given, including showing that the homotopy fixed points defined by Devinatz and Hopkins for closed subgroups of the extended Morava stabilizer group agree with those defined with respect to a continuous action and in terms of the derived functor of fixed points.

Some root invariants at the prime 2

The first part of this paper consists of lecture notes which summarize the machinery of filtered root invariants. A conceptual notion of "homotopy Greek letter element" is also introduced, and evidence is presented that it may be related to the root invariant. In the second part we compute some low dimensional root invariants of v_1-periodic elements at the prime 2.

Topological automorphic forms

We apply a theorem of J. Lurie to produce cohomology theories associated to certain Shimura varieties of type U(1,n-1). These cohomology theories of topological automorphic forms (TAF) are related to Shimura varieties in the same way that TMF is related to the moduli space of elliptic curves. We study the cohomology operations on these theories, and relate them to certain Hecke algebras. We compute the K(n)-local homotopy types of these cohomology theories, and determine that K(n)-locally these spectra are given by finite products of homotopy fixed point spectra of the Morava E-theory E_n by finite subgroups of the Morava stabilizer group. We construct spectra Q_U(K) for compact open subgroups K of certain adele groups, generalizing the spectra Q(l) studied by the first author in the modular case. We show that the spectra Q_U(K) admit finite resolutions by the spectra TAF, arising from the theory of buildings. We prove that the K(n)-localizations of the spectra Q_U(K) are finite products of homotopy fixed point spectra of E_n with respect to certain arithmetic subgroups of the Morava stabilizer groups, which N. Naumann has shown (in certain cases) to be dense. Thus the spectra Q_U(K) approximate the K(n)-local sphere to the same degree that the spectra Q(l) approximate the K(2)-local sphere.

beta-family congruences and the f-invariant

In previous work, the authors have each introduced methods for studying the 2-line of the p-local Adams-Novikov spectral sequence in terms of the arithmetic of modular forms. We give the precise relationship between the congruences of modular forms introduced by the first author with the Q-spectrum and the f-invariant of the second author. This relationship enables us to refine the target group of the f-invariant in a way which makes it more manageable for computations.

On the existence of a v_2^32-self map on M(1,4) at the prime 2

Let M(1) be the mod 2 Moore spectrum. J.F. Adams proved that M(1) admits a minimal v_1-self map v_1^4: Sigma^8 M(1) -> M(1). Let M(1,4) be the cofiber of this self-map. The purpose of this paper is to prove that M(1,4) admits a minimal v_2-self map of the form v_2^32: Sigma^192 M(1,4) -> M(1,4). The existence of this map implies the existence of many 192-periodic families of elements in the stable homotopy groups of spheres.

Congruences between modular forms given by the divided beta family in homotopy theory

We characterize the 2-line of the p-local Adams-Novikov spectral sequence in terms of modular forms satisfying a certain explicit congruence condition for primes p > 3. We give a similar characterization of the 1-line, reinterpreting some earlier work of A. Baker and G. Laures. These results are then used to deduce that, for l a prime which generates the p-adic units, the spectrum Q(l) detects the alpha and beta families in the stable stems.

Buildings, elliptic curves, and the K(2)-local sphere

We investigate a dense subgroup Gamma of the second Morava stabilizer group given by a certain group of quasi-isogenies of a supersingular elliptic curve in characteristic p. The group Gamma acts on the Bruhat-Tits building for GL_2(Q_l) through its action on the l-adic Tate module. This action has finite stabilizers, giving a small resolution for the homotopy fixed point spectrum (E_2^hGamma)^hGal by spectra of topological modular forms. Here, E_2 is a version of Morava E-theory and Gal = Gal(barF_p/F_p).

A modular description of the K(2)-local sphere at the prime 3

Using degree N isogenies of elliptic curves, we produce a spectrum Q(N). This spectrum is built out of spectra related to tmf. At p=3 we show that the K(2)-local sphere is built out of Q(2) and its K(2)-local Spanier-Whitehead dual. This gives a conceptual reinterpretation a resolution of Goerss, Henn, Mahowald, and Rezk.

Isogenies of elliptic curves and the Morava stabilizer group

Let MS_2 be the p-primary second Morava stabilizer group, C a supersingular elliptic curve over \br{FF}_p, O the ring of endomorphisms of C, and \ell a topological generator of Z_p^x (respectively Z_2^x/{+-1} if p = 2). We show that for p > 2 the group Γ\subseteq O[1/\ell]^x of quasi-endomorphisms of degree a power of \ell is dense in MS_2. For p = 2, we show that Γis dense in an index 2 subgroup of MS_2.

Root invariants in the Adams spectral sequence

Let E be a ring spectrum for which the E-Adams spectral sequence converges. We define a variant of Mahowald's root invariant called the `filtered root invariant' which takes values in the E_1 term of the E-Adams spectral sequence. The main theorems of this paper concern when these filtered root invariants detect the actual root invariant, and explain a relationship between filtered root invariants and differentials and compositions in the E-Adams spectral sequence. These theorems are compared to some known computations of root invariants at the prime 2. We use the filtered root invariants to compute some low dimensional root invariants of v_1-periodic elements at the prime 3. We also compute the root invariants of some infinite v_1-periodic families of elements at the prime 3.
