A Complete Formal Specification and Verification of the BESW software control system of the Maeslant Storm Surge Barrier

The Maeslant Barrier is a storm surge barrier that protects Rotterdam and its harbour from storm surges in the North Sea. Its software control consists of three major components, one of which is BesW. BesW is responsible for all the movements of the barrier except for pushing and pulling it. In this document, we report on the complete formal specification of BesW in mCRL2. All its behaviour has been specified, including manual and testing modes. Furthermore, all fault situations have been taken into account. The formalisation allows formal verification of all behavioural properties, formulated in the modal $\mu$-calculus, with the constraints that water levels only have a restricted number of values and not all combinations of failures of pumps and valves are allowed.

Term Rewriting Based On Set Automaton Matching

In this article we investigate how a subterm pattern matching algorithm can be exploited to implement efficient term rewriting procedures. From the left-hand sides of the rewrite system we construct a set automaton, which can be used to find all redexes in a term efficiently. We formally describe a procedure that, given a rewrite strategy, interleaves pattern matching steps and rewriting steps and thus smoothly integrates redex discovery and subterm replacement. We then present an efficient implementation that instantiates this procedure with outermost rewriting, and present the results of some experiments. Our implementation shows to be competitive with comparable tools.

A process algebra with global variables

In standard process algebra, parallel components do not share a common state and communicate through synchronisation. The advantage of this type of communication is that it facilitates compositional reasoning. For modelling and analysing systems in which parallel components operate on shared memory, however, the communication-through-synchronisation paradigm is sometimes less convenient. In this paper we study a process algebra with a notion of global variable. We also propose an extension of Hennessy-Milner logic with predicates to test and set the values of the global variables, and prove correspondence results between validity of formulas in the extended logic and stateless bisimilarity and between validity of formulas in the extended logic without the set operator and state-based bisimilarity. We shall also present a translation from the process algebra with global variables to a fragment of mCRL2 that preserves the validity of formulas in the extended Hennessy-Milner logic.
