Photoemission and absorption under coherent and entangled-photon-pair illumination

The phenomena of subthreshold photoemission and absorption under coherent and entangled-photon-pair illumination are reviewed, and the generation and properties of entangled-photon pairs are surveyed. Three prominent forms of subthreshold photoemission are examined: one-photon Fermi-tail photoemission (FTP), two-photon photoemission (TPP), and entangled-two-photon photoemission (ETPP). Experimental methods for measuring subthreshold photocurrents and photoelectron count rates are discussed, along with strategies for enhancing selected contributions. Experimental observations of FTP from a CsK$_2$Sb photocathode in a photomultiplier tube (PMT), under both coherent and entangled-photon-pair illumination, are reviewed, and the role of FTP as a noise source in two-photon measurements is elucidated. TPP from Na and CsK$_2$Sb photocathodes in a PMT under classical-light illumination is considered, as are TPP and ETPP from a CsK$_2$Sb photocathode in a channel photomultiplier (CPM) under coherent and entangled-photon-pair illumination. The observation of ETPP is facilitated by the use of a CPM, which suppresses FTP, and by low-intensity illumination, which minimizes TPP. Quantum models of TPP and ETPP accord well with experiment. Entangled-two-photon absorption (ETPA) is analyzed, as are its applications in entangled-two-photon fluorescence microscopy (ETPFM) and entangled-two-photon spectroscopy (ETPS). The three principal forms of subthreshold absorption parallel those of subthreshold photoemission: singleton-induced Boltzmann-tail absorption; cousin-induced/singleton-pair-induced two-photon absorption; and twin-induced ETPA. Heuristic particle and fully quantum models of these processes are compared, and experimental studies of ETPA and ETPFM, together with methods for enhancing their observability, are summarized.

Polarization-Sensitive Quantum Optical Coherence Tomography: Experiment

Polarization-sensitive quantum optical coherence tomography (PS-QOCT) makes use of a Type-II twin-photon light source for carrying out optical sectioning with polarization sensitivity. A BBO nonlinear optical crystal pumped by a Ti:sapphire psec-pulsed laser is used to confirm the theoretical underpinnings of this imaging paradigm. PS-QOCT offers even-order dispersion cancellation with simultaneous access to the group-velocity dispersion characteristics of the interstitial medium between the reflecting surfaces of the sample.

Polarization-sensitive quantum-optical coherence tomography

We set forth a polarization-sensitive quantum-optical coherence tomography (PS-QOCT) technique that provides axial optical sectioning with polarization-sensitive capabilities. The technique provides a means for determining information about the optical path length between isotropic reflecting surfaces, the relative magnitude of the reflectance from each interface, the birefringence of the interstitial material, and the orientation of the optical axis of the sample. PS-QOCT is immune to sample dispersion and therefore permits measurements to be made at depths greater than those accessible via ordinary optical coherence tomography. We also provide a general Jones matrix theory for analyzing PS-QOCT systems and outline an experimental procedure for carrying out such measurements.

Controllable Frequency Entanglement via Auto-Phase-Matched Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion

A new method for generating entangled photons with controllable frequency correlation via spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) is presented. The method entails initiating counter-propagating SPDC in a single-mode nonlinear waveguide by pumping with a pulsed beam perpendicular to the waveguide. The method offers several advantages over other schemes, including the ability to generate frequency-correlated photon pairs regardless of the dispersion characteristics of the system. Numerical evidence demonstrates the improvement provided by this source in the special case of frequency-correlated two-photon states.

Counter-propagating entangled photons from a waveguide with periodic nonlinearity

The conditions required for spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a waveguide with periodic nonlinearity in the presence of an unguided pump field are established. Control of the periodic nonlinearity and the physical properties of the waveguide permits the quasi-phase matching equations that describe counter-propagating guided signal and idler beams to be satisfied. We compare the tuning curves and spectral properties of such counter-propagating beams to those for co-propagating beams under typical experimental conditions. We find that the counter-propagating beams exhibit narrow bandwidth permitting the generation of quantum states that possess discrete-frequency entanglement. Such states may be useful for experiments in quantum optics and technologies that benefit from frequency entanglement.

Biphoton focusing for two-photon excitation

We study two-photon excitation using biphotons generated via the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a nonlinear crystal. We show that the focusing of these biphotons yields an excitation distribution that is essentially the same as the distribution of one-photon excitation at the pump wavelength. We also demonstrate that biphoton excitation in the image region yields a distribution whose axial width is approximately that of the crystal thickness and whose transverse width is that of the pump at the input to the crystal.
