Development of a Fast Position-Sensitive Laser Beam Detector

We report the development of a fast position-sensitive laser beam detector with a bandwidth that exceeds currently available detectors. The detector uses a fiber-optic bundle that spatially splits the incident beam, followed by a fast balanced photo-detector. The detector is applied to the study of Brownian motion of particles on fast time scales with 1 Angstrom spatial resolution. Future applications include the study of molecule motors, protein folding, as well as cellular processes.

Single-Photon Atomic Cooling

We report the cooling of an atomic ensemble with light, where each atom scatters only a single photon on average. This is a general method that does not require a cycling transition and can be applied to atoms or molecules which are magnetically trapped. We discuss the application of this new approach to the cooling of hydrogenic atoms for the purpose of precision spectroscopy and fundamental tests.

Stopping Supersonic Beams with an Atomic Coilgun

We report the stopping of an atomic beam, using a series of pulsed electromagnetic coils. We use a supersonic beam of metastable neon created in a gas discharge as a monochromatic source of paramagnetic atoms. A series of coils is fired in a timed sequence to bring the atoms to near-rest, where they are detected on a micro-channel plate. Applications to fundamental problems in physics and chemistry are discussed.

Entangling identical bosons in optical tweezers via exchange interaction

We first devise a scheme to perform a universal entangling gate via controlled collisions between pairs of atomic qubits trapped with optical tweezers. Second, we present a modification to this scheme to allow the preparation of atomic Bell pairs via selective excitation, suitable for quantum information processing applications that do not require universality. Both these schemes are enabled by the inherent symmetries of identical composite particles, as originally proposed by Hayes et al. Our scheme provides a technique for producing weighted graph states, entangled resources for quantum communication, and a promising approach to performing a "loophole free" Bell test in a single laboratory.

Transition to Instability in a Periodically Kicked Bose-Einstein Condensate on a Ring

A periodically kicked ring of a Bose-Einstein condensate is considered as a nonlinear generalization of the quantum kicked rotor, where the nonlinearity stems from the mean field interactions between the condensed atoms. For weak interactions, periodic motion (anti-resonance) becomes quasiperiodic (quantum beating) but remains stable. There exists a critical strength of interactions beyond which quasiperiodic motion becomes chaotic, resulting in an instability of the condensate manifested by exponential growth in the number of noncondensed atoms. In the stable regime, the system remains predominantly in the two lowest energy states and may be mapped onto a spin model, from which we obtain an analytic expression for the beat frequency and discuss the route to instability. We numerically explore parameter regime for the occurrence of instability and reveal the characteristic density profile for both condensed and noncondensed atoms. The Arnold diffusion to higher energy levels is found to be responsible for the transition to instability. Similar behavior is observed for dynamically localized states (essentially quasiperiodic motions), where stability remains for weak interactions but is destroyed by strong interactions.

Statistical Mechanics of an Optical Phase Space Compressor

We describe the statistical mechanics of a new method to produce very cold atoms or molecules. The method results from trapping a gas in a potential well, and sweeping through the well a semi-permeable barrier, one that allows particles to leave but not to return. If the sweep is sufficiently slow, all the particles trapped in the well compress into an arbitrarily cold gas. We derive analytical expressions for the velocity distribution of particles in the cold gas, and compare these results with numerical simulations.

Extracting Atoms on Demand with Lasers

We propose a scheme that allows to coherently extract cold atoms from a reservoir in a deterministic way. The transfer is achieved by means of radiation pulses coupling two atomic states which are object to different trapping conditions. A particular realization is proposed, where one state has zero magnetic moment and is confined by a dipole trap, whereas the other state with non-vanishing magnetic moment is confined by a steep microtrap potential. We show that in this setup a predetermined number of atoms can be transferred from a reservoir, a Bose-Einstein condensate, into the collective quantum state of the steep trap with high efficiency in the parameter regime of present experiments.

Quantum Chaos of Bogoliubov Waves for a Bose-Einstein Condensate in Stadium Billiards

We investigate the possibility of quantum (or wave) chaos for the Bogoliubov excitations of a Bose-Einstein condensate in billiards. Because of the mean field interaction in the condensate, the Bogoliubov excitations are very different from the single particle excitations in a non-interacting system. Nevertheless, we predict that the statistical distribution of level spacings is unchanged by mapping the non-Hermitian Bogoliubov operator to a real symmetric matrix. We numerically test our prediction by using a phase shift method for calculating the excitation energies.

Entanglement generation and multiparticle interferometry with neutral atoms

We study the preparation and manipulation of states involving a small number of interacting particles. By controlling the splitting and fusing of potential wells, we show how to interconvert Mott-insulator-like and trapped BEC-like states. We also discuss the generation of "Schrödinger cat" states by splitting a microtrap and taking into practical consideration the asymmetry between the resulting wells. These schemes can be used to perform multiparticle interferometry with neutral atoms, where interference effects can be observed only when all the participating particles are measured.

A Quantum Tweezer for Atoms

We propose a quantum tweezer for extracting a desired number of neutral atoms from a reservoir. A trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is used as the reservoir, taking advantage of its coherent nature, which can guarantee a constant outcome. The tweezer is an attractive quantum dot, which may be generated by red-detuned laser light. By moving with certain speeds, the dot can extract a desired number of atoms from the BEC through Landau-Zener tunneling. The feasibility of our quantum tweezer is demonstrated through realistic and extensive model calculations.
