Open enumerative geometries for Landau-Ginzburg models

We survey the recent progress in defining open enumerative theories for Landau-Ginzburg models. We illustrate the ideas required to develop these new foundations. In particular, we describe how to define the open enumerative invariants as integrals of multisections of certain vector bundles over a moduli space that is a real orbifold with corners, after prescribing boundary conditions for the multisections. We then explain the known situations where the open invariants satisfy certain forms of topological recursion relations, integrable hierarchies, or mirror symmetry. We end with a list of open questions and problems.

Geometry of the stability scattering diagram for $\mathbb{P}^2$ and applications

We give a detailed analysis of the stability scattering diagram for $\mathbb{P}^2$ introduced by Bousseau. This scattering diagram lives in a subset of $\mathbb{R}^2$, and we decompose this subset into three regions, $R_{\Delta},R_{\Diamond}$ and $R_{\mathrm{unbdd}}$. The region $R_{\Delta}$ has a chamber structure whose chambers are in one-to-one correspondence with strong exceptional triples. No ray of the stability scattering diagram enters the interior of such a triangle, replicating a result of Prince, and generalizing a result of Bousseau. The region $R_{\Diamond}$ is decomposed into diamonds, which are in one-to-one correspondence with exceptional bundles. Each diamond has a vertical diagonal corresponding to a rank zero object and is traversed by a dense set of rays. Crucially, however, there are no collisions of rays inside diamonds, making it still possible to control the scattering diagram in $R_{\Diamond}$. Finally, the behaviour of $R_{\mathrm{unbdd}}$ is chaotic, in that every rational point inside it is a collision of an infinite number of rays. We show that the bounded region $R_{\mathrm{bdd}}= R_{\Delta}\cup R_{\Diamond}$ has as upper boundary the Le Potier curve, thus showing that this curve arises naturally through the algorithmic scattering process. We give an application of these results by describing the first wall-crossing for the moduli space of one-dimensional rank zero objects on $\mathbb{P}^2$. In the sequel, we apply these results to describe the full Bridgeland wall-crossing for $\mathrm{Hilb}^n(\mathbb{P}^2)$ for any $n$.

Remarks on gluing punctured logarithmic maps

We consider some well-behaved cases of the gluing formalism for punctured stable log maps of Abramovich-Chen-Gross-Siebert. This gives a gluing formula for log Gromov-Witten invariants in a diverse set of cases; in particular, the gluing formulae of Li-Ruan, Jun Li and Kim-Lho-Ruddat become an easy special case. The last section gives an application of this gluing formalism to canonical wall structures for K3 surfaces as constructed by Gross and Siebert in "The canonical wall structure and intrinsic mirror symmetry."

Mirror Symmetry for open r-spin invariants

We show that a generating function for open $r$-spin enumerative invariants produces a universal unfolding of the polynomial $x^r$. Further, the coordinates parametrizing this universal unfolding are flat coordinates on the Frobenius manifold associated to the Landau-Ginzburg model $(\mathbb{C},x^r)$ via Saito-Givental theory. This result provides evidence for the same phenomenon to occur in higher dimension, proven in a sequel paper.

Open FJRW Theory and Mirror Symmetry

We construct an open enumerative theory for the Landau-Ginzburg (LG) model $(\mathbb{C}^2, \mu_r\times \mu_s, x^r+y^s)$. The invariants are defined as integrals of multisections of a Witten bundle with descendents over a moduli space that is a real orbifold with corners. In turn, a generating function for these open invariants yields the mirror LG model and a versal deformation of it with flat coordinates. After establishing an open topological recursion result, we prove an LG/LG open mirror symmetry theorem in dimension two with all descendents. The open invariants we define are not unique but depend on boundary conditions that, when altered, exhibit wall-crossing phenomena for the invariants. We describe an LG wall-crossing group classifying the wall-crossing transformations that can occur.

The canonical wall structure and intrinsic mirror symmetry

As announced "Intrinsic mirror symmetry and punctured invariants" in 2016, we construct and prove consistency of the canonical wall structure. This construction starts with a log Calabi-Yau pair (X,D) and produces a wall structure, as defined by Gross-Hacking-Siebert. Roughly put, the canonical wall structure is a data structure which encodes an algebro-geometric analogue of counts of Maslov index zero disks. These enumerative invariants are defined in terms of the punctured invariants of Abramovich-Chen-Gross-Siebert. There are then two main theorems of the paper. First, we prove consistency of the canonical wall structure, so that the canonical wall structure gives rise to a mirror family. Second, we prove that this mirror family coincides with the intrinsic mirror constructed in our paper "Intrinsic mirror symmetry". While the setup of this paper is narrower than that of the latter paper, it gives a more detailed description of the mirror.

Punctured logarithmic maps

We introduce a variant of stable logarithmic maps, which we call punctured logarithmic maps. They allow an extension of logarithmic Gromov-Witten theory in which marked points have a negative order of tangency with boundary divisors. As a main application we develop a gluing formalism which reconstructs stable logarithmic maps and their virtual cycles without expansions of the target, with tropical geometry providing the underlying combinatorics. Punctured Gromov-Witten invariants also play a pivotal role in the intrinsic construction of mirror partners by the last two authors in arXiv:1909.07649, conjecturally relating to symplectic cohomology, and in the logarithmic gauged linear sigma model in upcoming work of the second author with Felix Janda and Yongbin Ruan.

The Higher Dimensional Tropical Vertex

We study log Calabi-Yau varieties obtained as a blow-up of a toric variety along hypersurfaces in its toric boundary. Mirrors to such varieties are constructed by Gross-Siebert from a canonical scattering diagram built by using punctured log Gromov-Witten invariants of Abramovich-Chen-Gross-Siebert. We show that there is a piecewise linear isomorphism between the canonical scattering diagram and a scattering diagram defined algortihmically, following a higher dimensional generalisation of the Kontsevich-Soibelman construction. We deduce that the punctured log Gromov-Witten invariants of the log Calabi-Yau variety can be captured from this algorithmic construction. As a particular example, we compute these invariants for a non-toric blow-up of the three dimensional projective space along two lines. This generalizes previous results of Gross-Pandharipande-Siebert on "The Tropical Vertex" to higher dimensions.

Geometry of twisted K\"ahler-Einstein metrics and collapsing

We prove that the twisted Kahler-Einstein metrics that arise on the base of certain holomorphic fiber space with Calabi-Yau fibers have conical-type singularities along the discriminant locus. These fiber spaces arise naturally when studying the collapsing of Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on Calabi-Yau manifolds, and of the Kahler-Ricci flow on compact Kahler manifolds with semiample canonical bundle and intermediate Kodaira dimension. Our results allow us to understand their collapsed Gromov-Hausdorff limits when the base is smooth and the discriminant has simple normal crossings.

The mirror of the cubic surface

This paper expands on a remark in the paper "Mirror Symmetry for Log Calabi-Yau Surfaces I" of the first three authors of this paper, explaining fully how various constructions of the authors apply to give the mirror to the cubic surface. We give a full description of the scattering diagram associated to the cubic surface: this is a particularly nice diagram in which rays of every rational slope occur, but they may all be described. The equation of the mirror cubic family is then derived in two ways, first by using broken lines and then by using more recent constructions involving a direct calculation of Gromov-Witten invariants.

Intrinsic Mirror Symmetry

We associate a ring R to a log Calabi-Yau pair (X,D) or a degeneration of Calabi-Yau manifolds X->B. The vector space underlying R is determined by the tropicalization of (X,D) or X->B, while the product rule is defined using punctured Gromov-Witten invariants, defined in joint work with Abramovich and Chen. In the log Calabi-Yau case, if D is maximally degenerate, then we propose that Spec R is the mirror to X\D, while in the Calabi-Yau degeneration case, if the degeneration is maximally unipotent, the mirror is expected to be Proj R. The main result in this paper is that R as defined is an associative, commutative ring with unit, with associativity the most difficult part.

Holomorphic Hartree-Fock Theory: The Nature of Two-Electron Problems

We explore the existence and behaviour of holomorphic restricted Hartree-Fock (h-RHF) solutions for two-electron problems. Through algebraic geometry, the exact number of solutions with $n$ basis functions is rigorously identified as $\frac{1}{2}(3^n - 1)$, proving that states must exist for all molecular geometries. A detailed study on the h-RHF states of HZ (STO-3G) then demonstrates both the conservation of holomorphic solutions as geometry or atomic charges are varied and the emergence of complex h-RHF solutions at coalescence points. Using catastrophe theory, the nature of these coalescence points is described, highlighting the influence of molecular symmetry. The h-RHF states of HHeH$^{2+}$ and HHeH (STO-3G) are then compared, illustrating the isomorphism between systems with two electrons and two electron holes. Finally, we explore the h-RHF states of ethene (STO-3G) by considering the $\pi$ electrons as a two-electron problem, and employ NOCI to identify a crossing of the lowest energy singlet and triplet states at the perpendicular geometry.

Decomposition of degenerate Gromov-Witten invariants

We prove a decomposition formula of logarithmic Gromov-Witten invariants in a degeneration setting. A one-parameter log smooth family X->B with singular fibre over b_0 \in B yields a family M(X/B,\beta) -> B of moduli stacks of stable logarithmic maps. We give a virtual decomposition of the fibre of this family over b_0 in terms of rigid tropical curves. This generalizes one aspect of known results in the case that the fibre X_{b_0} is a normal crossings union of two divisors. We exhibit our formulas in explicit examples.

Intrinsic mirror symmetry and punctured Gromov-Witten invariants

This contribution to the 2015 AMS Summer Institute in Algebraic Geometry (Salt Lake City) announces a general mirror construction. This construction applies to log Calabi-Yau pairs (X,D) with maximal boundary D or to maximally unipotent degenerations of Calabi-Yau manifolds. The new ingredient is a notion of "punctured Gromov-Witten invariant", currently in progress with Abramovich and Chen. The mirror to a pair (X,D) is constructed as the spectrum of a ring defined using the punctured invariants of (X,D). An analogous construction leads to mirrors of Calabi-Yau manifolds. This can be viewed as a generalization of constructions developed jointly with Hacking and Keel in the case of log CY surfaces and K3 surfaces.

Theta functions on varieties with effective anti-canonical class

We show that a large class of maximally degenerating families of n-dimensional polarized varieties come with a canonical basis of sections of powers of the ample line bundle. The families considered are obtained by smoothing a reducible union of toric varieties governed by a wall structure on a real n-(pseudo-)manifold. Wall structures have previously been constructed inductively for cases with locally rigid singularities and by Gromov-Witten theory for mirrors of log Calabi-Yau surfaces and K3 surfaces by various combinations of the authors. For trivial wall structures on the n-torus we retrieve the classical theta functions. Possible applications include mirror symmetry, geometric compactifications of moduli of certain polarized varieties via stable pairs and geometric quantization.

On homological mirror symmetry of toric Calabi-Yau three-folds

We use Lagrangian torus fibrations on the mirror $X$ of a toric Calabi-Yau threefold $\check X$ to construct Lagrangian sections and various Lagrangian spheres on $X$. We then propose an explicit correspondence between the sections and line bundles on $\check X$ and between spheres and sheaves supported on the toric divisors of $\check X$. We conjecture that these correspondences induce an embedding of the relevant derived Fukaya category of $X$ inside the derived category of coherent sheaves on $\check X$.

Canonical bases for cluster algebras

In previous work, the first three authors conjectured that the ring of regular functions on a natural class of affine log Calabi-Yau varieties (those with maximal boundary) has a canonical vector space basis parameterized by the integral tropical points of the mirror. Further, the structure constants for the multiplication rule in this basis should be given by counting broken lines (certain combinatorial objects, morally the tropicalisations of holomorphic discs). Here we prove the conjecture in the case of cluster varieties, where the statement is a more precise form of the Fock-Goncharov dual basis conjecture. In particular, under suitable hypotheses, for each Y the partial compactification of an affine cluster variety U given by allowing some frozen variables to vanish, we obtain canonical bases for the ring of functions on Y extending to a basis for functions on U. Each choice of seed canonically identifies the parameterizing sets of these bases with integral points in a polyhedral cone. These results specialize to basis results of combinatorial representation theory. For example, by considering the open double Bruhat cell U in the basic affine space Y we obtain a canonical basis of each irreducible representation of SL_r, parameterized by a set which each choice of seed identifies with integral points of a lattice polytope. These bases and polytopes are all constructed essentially without representation theoretic considerations. Along the way, our methods prove a number of conjectures in cluster theory, including positivity of the Laurent phenomenon for cluster algebras of geometric type.
