Faithful linear and relational representations of diagram categories and monoids

We study representations of diagram categories by binary relations and matrices over rings and semirings. Our main result is a faithful involutive tensor representation of the partition category $P$ (and consequently of each partition monoid $P_n$) by zero-one matrices over an arbitrary (additively) idempotent semiring. The dimensions of the matrices involved are powers of $2$, and we show that these are minimal with respect to faithful involutive tensor representations by matrices over any semiring. Intriguingly, these matrices encode the number of floating components formed when composing partitions, and can therefore be used to construct faithful representations of ($d$-)twisted partition categories $P^\Phi$ and $P^{\Phi,d}$ (and the respective twisted partition monoids $P_n^\Phi$ and $P_n^{\Phi, d}$) over rings of appropriate characteristic. We also give lower-dimensional involutive representations of the Brauer and Temperley--Lieb categories $B$ and $TL$. In the case of $TL$, the dimensions are given by Fibonacci numbers.

Free inverse monoids are co-context-free

We prove (using grammars) that the free inverse monoid of every finite rank has co-context-free word problem. Equivalently, the co-word problem of the free inverse monoid of every finite rank is context-free.

The large scale geometry of inverse semigroups and their maximal group images

The geometry of inverse semigroups is a natural topic of study, motivated both from within semigroup theory and by applications to the theory of non-commutative $C^*$-algebras. We study the relationship between the geometry of an inverse semigroup and that of its maximal group image, and in particular the geometric \textit{distortion} of the natural map from the former to the latter. This turns out to have both implications for semigroup theory and potential relevance for operator algebras associated to inverse semigroups. Along the way, we also answer a question of Lled\'{o} and Mart\'{i}nez by providing a more direct proof that an $E$-unitary inverse semigroup has Yu's Property A if its maximal group image does.

The growth of free inverse monoids

We compute the rate of exponential growth of the free inverse monoid of rank $r$ (and hence an upper bound on the corresponding rate for all $r$-generated inverse monoids and semigroups). This turns out to be an algebraic number strictly between the obvious bounds of $2r-1$ and $2r$, tending to $2r$ as the rank tends to infinity. We also find an explicit expression for the exponential growth rate of the number of idempotents, and prove that this tends to $\sqrt{e(2k-1)}$ as $k \to \infty$.

Pretzel monoids

We introduce an interesting class of left adequate monoids which we call pretzel monoids. These, on the one hand, are monoids of birooted graphs with respect to a natural `glue-and-fold' operation, and on the other hand, are shown to be defined in the category of left adequate monoids by a natural class of presentations. They are also shown to be the free idempotent-pure expansions of right cancellative monoids, making them, in some sense, the left adequate analogues of Margolis-Meakin expansions for inverse monoids. The construction recovers the second author's geometric model of free left adequate monoids when the right cancellative monoid is free.

Translational hulls of semigroups of endomorphisms of an algebra

We consider the translational hull $\Omega(I)$ of an arbitrary subsemigroup $I$ of an endomorphism monoid $\mathrm{End}(A)$ where $A$ is a universal algebra. We give conditions for every bi-translation of $I$ to be realised by transformations, or by endomorphisms, of $A$. We demonstrate that certain of these conditions are also sufficient to provide natural isomorphisms between the translational hull of $I$ and the idealiser of $I$ within $\mathrm{End}(A)$, which in the case where $I$ is an ideal is simply $\mathrm{End}(A)$. We describe the connection between these conditions and work of Petrich and Gluskin in the context of densely embedded ideals. Where the conditions fail, we develop a methodology to extract information concerning $\Omega(I)$ from the translational hull $\Omega(I/{\approx})$ of a quotient $I/{\approx}$ of $I$. We illustrate these concepts in detail in the cases where $A$ is: a free algebra; an independence algebra; a finite symmetric group.

Subgroups of $E$-unitary and $R_1$-injective special inverse monoids

We continue the study of the structure of general subgroups (in particular maximal subgroups, also known as group $\mathcal{H}$-classes) of special inverse monoids. Recent research of the authors has established that these can be quite wild, but in this paper we show that if we restrict to special inverse monoids which are $E$-unitary (or have a weaker property we call $\mathcal{R}_1$-injectivity), the maximal subgroups are strongly governed by the group of units. In particular, every maximal subgroup has a finite index subgroup which embeds in the group of units. We give a construction to show that every finite group can arise as a maximal subgroup in an $\mathcal{R}_1$-injective special inverse monoid with trivial group of units. It remains open whether every combination of a group $G$ and finite index subgroup $H$ can arise as maximal subgroup and group of units.

Maximal subgroups of finitely presented special inverse monoids

We study the maximal subgroups (also known as group $\mathcal{H}$-classes) of finitely presented special inverse monoids. We show that the maximal subgroups which can arise in such monoids are exactly the recursively presented groups, and moreover every such maximal subgroup can also arise in the $E$-unitary case. We also prove that the possible groups of units are exactly the finitely generated recursively presented groups; this improves upon a result of, and answers a question of, the first author and Ru\v{s}kuc. These results give the first significant insight into the maximal subgroups of such monoids beyond the group of units, and the results together demonstrate that it is possible for the subgroup structure to have a complexity which significantly exceeds that of the group of units. We also observe that a finitely presented special inverse monoid (even an $E$-unitary one) may have infinitely many pairwise non-isomorphic maximal subgroups.

Representations and identities of plactic-like monoids

We exhibit faithful representations of the hypoplactic, stalactic, taiga, sylvester, Baxter and right patience sorting monoids of each finite rank as monoids of upper triangular matrices over any semiring from a large class including the tropical semiring and fields of characteristic $0$. By analysing the image of these representations, we show that the variety generated by a single hypoplactic (respectively, stalactic or taiga) monoid of rank at least $2$ coincides with the variety generated by the natural numbers together with a fixed finite monoid $\mathcal{H}$ (respectively, $\mathcal{F}$) forming a proper subvariety of the variety generated by the plactic monoid of rank $2$.

Permutability of Matrices over Bipotent Semirings

We study permutability properties of matrix semigroups over commutative bipotent semirings (of which the best-known example is the tropical semiring). We prove that every such semigroup is weakly permutable (a result previous stated in the literature, but with an erroneous proof) and then proceed to study in depth the question of when they are strongly permutable (which turns out to depend heavily on the semiring). Along the way we classify monogenic bipotent semirings and describe all isomorphisms between truncated tropical semirings.

Linear functions preserving Green's relations over fields

We study linear functions on the space of $n \times n$ matrices over a field which preserve or strongly preserve each of Green's equivalence relations ($\mathcal{L}$, $\mathcal{R}$, $\mathcal{H}$ and $\mathcal{J}$) and the corresponding pre-orders. For each of these relations we are able to completely describe all preservers over an algebraically closed field (or more generally, a field in which every polynomial of degree $n$ has a root), and all strong preservers and bijective preservers over any field. Over a general field, the non-zero $\mathcal{J}$-preservers are all bijective and coincide with the bijective rank-$1$ preservers, while the non-zero $\mathcal{H}$-preservers turn out to be exactly the invertibility preservers, which are known. The $\mathcal{L}$- and $\mathcal{R}$-preservers over a field with "few roots" seem harder to describe: we give a family of examples showing that they can be quite wild.

Identities in Upper Triangular Tropical Matrix Semigroups and the Bicyclic Monoid

We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for a semigroup identity to hold in the monoid of $n\times n$ upper triangular tropical matrices, in terms of equivalence of certain tropical polynomials. This leads to an algorithm for checking whether such an identity holds, in time polynomial in the length of the identity and size of the alphabet. It also allows us to answer a question of Izhakian and Margolis, by showing that the identities which hold in the monoid of $2\times 2$ upper triangular tropical matrices are exactly the same as those which hold in the bicyclic monoid. Our results extend to a broader class of "chain structured tropical matrix semigroups"; we exhibit a faithful representation of the free monogenic inverse semigroup within such a semigroup, which leads also to a representation by $3\times 3$ upper triangular matrix semigroups, and a new proof of the fact that this semigroup satisfies the same identities as the bicyclic monoid.

Tropical representations and identities of plactic monoids

We exhibit a faithful representation of the plactic monoid of every finite rank as a monoid of upper triangular matrices over the tropical semiring. This answers a question first posed by Izhakian and subsequently studied by several authors. A consequence is a proof of a conjecture of Kubat and Okniński that every plactic monoid of finite rank satisfies a non-trivial semigroup identity. In the converse direction, we show that every identity satisfied by the plactic monoid of rank $n$ is satisfied by the monoid of $n \times n$ upper triangular tropical matrices. In particular this implies that the variety generated by the $3 \times 3$ upper triangular tropical matrices coincides with that generated by the plactic monoid of rank $3$, answering another question of Izhakian.

Free objects in triangular matrix varieties and quiver algebras over semirings

We study the free objects in the variety of semigroups and variety of monoids generated by the monoid of all $n \times n$ upper triangular matrices over a commutative semiring. We obtain explicit representations of these, as multiplicative subsemigroups of quiver algebras over polynomial semirings. In the $2 \times 2$ case this also yields a representation as a subsemigroup of a semidirect product of commutative monoids. In particular, from the case where $n=2$ and the semiring is the tropical semifield, we obtain a representation of the free objects in the monoid and semigroup varieties generated by the bicyclic monoid (or equivalently, by the free monogenic inverse monoid), inside a semidirect product of a commutative monoid acting on a semilattice. We apply these representations to answer several questions, including that of when the given varieties are locally finite.

Linear isomorphisms preserving Green's relations for matrices over semirings

In this paper we characterize those linear bijective maps on the monoid of all $n \times n$ square matrices over an anti-negative semifield which preserve and strongly preserve each of Green's equivalence relations $\mathcal{L}, \mathcal{R}, \mathcal{D}, \mathcal{J}$ and the corresponding three pre-orderings $\leq_\mathcal{L}, \leq_\mathcal{R}, \leq_\mathcal{J}$. These results apply in particular to the tropical and boolean semirings, and for these two semirings we also obtain corresponding results for the $\mathcal{H}$ relation.

On cogrowth, amenability and the spectral radius of a random walk on a semigroup

We introduce two natural notions of cogrowth for finitely generated semigroups --- one local and one global --- and study their relationship with amenability and random walks. We establish the minimal and maximal possible values for cogrowth rates, and show that non-monogenic free semigroups are exactly characterised by minimal global cogrowth. We consider the relationship with cogrowth for groups and with amenability of semigroups. We also study the relationship with random walks on finitely generated semigroups, and in particular the spectral radius of the associated Markov operators (when defined) on $\ell_2$-spaces. We show that either of maximal global cogrowth or the weak Følner condition suffices for its spectral radius to be at least $1$, since left amenability implies the weak Følner condition, this represents a generalisation to semigroups of one implication of Kesten's Theorem for groups. By combining with known results about amenability, we are able to establish a number of new sufficient conditions for (left or right) amenability in broad classes of semigroups. In particular, maximal local cogrowth left implies amenability in any left reversible semigroup, while maximal global cogrowth (which is a much weaker property) suffices for left amenability in an extremely broad class of semigroups encompassing all inverse semigroups, left reversible left cancellative semigroups and left reversible regular semigroups.

Pure Dimension and Projectivity of Tropical Polytopes

We study how geometric properties of tropical convex sets and polytopes, which are of interest in many application areas, manifest themselves in their algebraic structure as modules over the tropical semiring. Our main results establish a close connection between pure dimension of tropical convex sets, and projectivity (in the sense of ring theory). These results lead to a geometric understanding of idempotency for tropical matrices. As well as their direct interest, our results suggest that there is substantial scope to apply ideas and techniques from abstract algebra (in particular, ring theory) in tropical geometry.

NP-completeness in the gossip monoid

Gossip monoids form an algebraic model of networks with exclusive, transient connections in which nodes, when they form a connection, exchange all known information. They also arise naturally in pure mathematics, as the monoids generated by the set of all equivalence relations on a given finite set under relational composition. We prove that a number of important decision problems for these monoids (including the membership problem, and hence the problem of deciding whether a given state of knowledge can arise in a network of the kind under consideration) are NP-complete. As well as being of interest in their own right, these results shed light on the apparent difficulty of establishing the cardinalities of the gossip monoids: a problem which has attracted some attention in the last few years.
