The 2-primary Hurewicz image of tmf

We determine the image of the 2-primary tmf-Hurewicz homomorphism, where tmf is the spectrum of topological modular forms. We do this by lifting elements of tmf_* to the homotopy groups of the generalized Moore spectrum M(8,v_1^8) using a modified form of the Adams spectral sequence and the tmf-resolution, and then proving the existence of a v_2^32-self map on M(8,v_1^8) to generate 192-periodic families in the stable homotopy groups of spheres.

Detecting exotic spheres in low dimensions using coker J

Building off of the work of Kervaire and Milnor, and Hill, Hopkins, and Ravenel, Xu and Wang showed that the only odd dimensions n for which S^n has a unique differentiable structure are 1, 3, 5, and 61. We show that the only even dimensions below 140 for which S^n has a unique differentiable structure are 2, 6, 12, 56, and perhaps 4.

On Hopkins' Picard groups for the prime 3 and chromatic level 2

We give a calculation of Picard groups of K(2)-local invertible spectra and of E(2)-local invertible spectra, both at the prime 3. The main contribution of this paper is to calculation the subgroup of invertible spectra with the same Morava module as a sphere.

A Filtration of Unoriented Cobordism

We give a filtration of the unoriented cobordism ring using the infinite symplectic group, with polynomial generators given one at a time. The generating manifolds are also constructed using the cup construction.

Connective versions of TMF(3)

We study three connective versions of the spectrum for topological modular forms of level 3. All three were described briefly by Mahowald and Rezk in [Pure Appl Math Quar (2009)], but we add much detail to their discussion. Letting tmf(3) denote our connective model which is a ring spectrum, we compute the tmf(3)-homology of RP^infty.

Topological Modular Forms of Level 3

We describe and compute the homotopy of spectra of topological modular forms of level 3. We give some computations related to the "building complex" associated to level 3 structures at the prime 2. Finally, we note the existence of a number of connective models of the spectrum TMF(Gamma_0(3)).

The homotopy of the K(2)-local Moore spectrum at the prime 3 revisited

In this paper we use the approach introduced in an earlier paper by Goerss, Henn, Mahowald and Rezk in order to analyze the homotopy groups of L_{K(2)}V(0), the mod-3 Moore spectrum V(0) localized with respect to Morava K-theory K(2). These homotopy groups have already been calculated by Shimomura. The results are very complicated so that an independent verification via an alternative approach is of interest. In fact, we end up with a result which is more precise and also differs in some of its details from that of Shimomura. An additional bonus of our approach is that it breaks up the result into smaller and more digestible chunks which are related to the K(2)-localization of the spectrum TMF of topological modular forms and related spectra. Even more, the Adams-Novikov differentials for L_{K(2)}V(0) can be read off from those for TMF.

On the existence of a v_2^32-self map on M(1,4) at the prime 2

Let M(1) be the mod 2 Moore spectrum. J.F. Adams proved that M(1) admits a minimal v_1-self map v_1^4: Sigma^8 M(1) -> M(1). Let M(1,4) be the cofiber of this self-map. The purpose of this paper is to prove that M(1,4) admits a minimal v_2-self map of the form v_2^32: Sigma^192 M(1,4) -> M(1,4). The existence of this map implies the existence of many 192-periodic families of elements in the stable homotopy groups of spheres.

Immersions of RP^{2^e-1}

We prove that RP^{2^e-1} can be immersed in R^{2^{e+1}-e-7} provided e>6. If e>13, this is 1 better than previously known immersions. Our method is primarily an induction on geometric dimension, with compatibility of liftings being a central issue.

Nonimmersions of RP^n implied by tmf, revisited

In a 2002 paper, the authors and Bruner used the new spectrum tmf to obtain some new nonimmersions of real projective spaces. In this note, we complete/correct two oversights in that paper. The first is to note that in that paper a general nonimmersion result was stated which yielded new nonimmersions for RP^n with n as small as 48, and yet it was stated there that the first new result occurred when n=1536. Here we give a simple proof of those overlooked results. Secondly, we fill in a gap in the proof of the 2002 paper. There it was claimed that an axial map f must satisfy f^*(X)=X_1+X_2. We realized recently that this is not clear. However, here we show that it is true up multiplication by a unit in the appropriate ring, and so we retrieve all the nonimmersion results claimed in the original paper. Finally, we present a complete determination of tmf^{8*}(RP^\infty\times RP^\infty) and tmf^*(CP^\infty\times CP^\infty) in positive dimensions.
