Physics Briefing Book: Input for the 2026 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics

The European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) reflects the vision and presents concrete plans of the European particle physics community for advancing human knowledge in fundamental physics. The ESPP is updated every five-to-six years through a community-driven process. It commences with the submission of specific proposals and other input from the community at large, outlining projects envisioned for the near-, mid-, and long-term future. All submitted contributions are evaluated by the Physics Preparatory Group (PPG), and a preliminary analysis is presented at a Symposium meant to foster a broad community discussion on the scientific value and feasibility of the various ideas proposed. The outcomes of the analysis and the deliberations at the Symposium are synthesized in the current Briefing Book, which provides an important input in the deliberations of the Strategy recommendations by the European Strategy Group (ESG).

Recent results from T2K

The T2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment has produced the first observation of $\nu_{e}$ appearance and the most precise measurement of the mixing angle $\theta_{23}$ from $6.57 \times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target (POT) of neutrino beam data. We present here the results of T2K antineutrino oscillation analyses searching for $\bar{\nu}_{e}$ appearance and measuring the dominant oscillation parameters for $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$ disappearance, including the results from the T2K near detector fit. Using $4.01 \times 10^{20}$ POT of antineutrino beam data T2K measured $\sin^{2}(\bar{\theta}_{23}) = 0.45^{+0.29}_{-0.12}$ and $|\Delta \bar{m}^{2}_{32}| = 2.51\pm0.28 \times 10^{-3} (eV^{2})$, consistent with previous existing $\nu_{\mu}$ and $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$ disappearance measurements. From the same dataset 3 $\bar{\nu}_{e}$ candidate events were selected at the far detector, which did not provide evidence either for or against the $\bar{\nu}_{e}$ appearance hypothesis.

An Intermediate Water Cherenkov Detector at J-PARC

Recent neutrino oscillation results have shown that the existing long baseline experiments have some sensitivity to the effects of CP violation in the neutrino sector. This sensitivity is currently statistically limited, but the next generation of experiments, DUNE and Hyper-K, will provide an order of magnitude more events. To reach the full potential of these datasets we must achieve a commensurate improvement in our understanding of the systematic uncertainties that beset them. This talk describes two proposed intermediate detectors for the current and future long baseline oscillation experiments in Japan, TITUS and NuPRISM. These detectors are discussed in the context of the current T2K oscillation analysis, highlighting the ways in which they could reduce the systematic uncertainty on this measurement. The talk also describes the short baseline oscillation sensitivity of NuPRISM along with the neutrino scattering measurements the detector makes possible.
