Chaos and Quantum Thermalization

We show that a bounded, isolated quantum system of many particles in a specific initial state will approach thermal equilibrium if the energy eigenfunctions which are superposed to form that state obey {\it Berry's conjecture}. Berry's conjecture is expected to hold only if the corresponding classical system is chaotic, and essentially states that the energy eigenfunctions behave as if they were gaussian random variables. We review the existing evidence, and show that previously neglected effects substantially strengthen the case for Berry's conjecture. We study a rarefied hard-sphere gas as an explicit example of a many-body system which is known to be classically chaotic, and show that an energy eigenstate which obeys Berry's conjecture predicts a Maxwell--Boltzmann, Bose--Einstein, or Fermi--Dirac distribution for the momentum of each constituent particle, depending on whether the wave functions are taken to be nonsymmetric, completely symmetric, or completely antisymmetric functions of the positions of the particles. We call this phenomenon {\it eigenstate thermalization}. We show that a generic initial state will approach thermal equilibrium at least as fast as $O(\hbar/Δ)t^{-1}$, where $Δ$ is the uncertainty in the total energy of the gas. This result holds for an individual initial state; in contrast to the classical theory, no averaging over an ensemble of initial states is needed. We argue that these results constitute a new foundation for quantum statistical mechanics.

Window Functions for CMB Experiments

We discuss the applicability and derivation of window functions for cosmic microwave background experiments on large and intermediate angular scales. These window functions describe the response of the experiment to power in a particular mode of the fluctuation spectrum. We give general formulae, illustrated with specific examples, for the most common observing strategies.

Implications of MAX for CDM

We analyze the Gamma Ursae Minoris (GUM) and Mu Pegasii (MuP) scans of the Millimeter-wave Anisotropy eXperiment in the context of cold dark matter (CDM) models of structure formation, paying particular attention to the two-dimensional nature of the GUM scan. If all of the structure in the (foreground subtracted) data is attributed to cosmic microwave background anisotropy, then there is a detection in each scan. For a standard CDM model, the amplitudes of the signals are individually compatible with the COsmic Background Explorer measurement, but marginally inconsistent with each other.

Cosmic Variance of the Three-Point Correlation Function of the Cosmic Microwave Background

The fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background radiation may contain deviations from gaussian statistics which would be reflected in a nonzero value of three-point correlation function of $ΔT$. However, any potential observation of the three-point function is limited by cosmic variance, even if a whole-sky map of $ΔT$ is available. Here I derive a general formula for the cosmic variance of the three-point function in terms of integrals over the two-point function. This formula can be applied to any cosmological model and to any experimental measurement strategy. It gives a fundamental lower limit on the magnitude of a measurable three-point correlation function, and hence on the measurable amount of skewness in the distribution of $ΔT$.

Is Purity Eternal?

Phenomenological and formal restrictions on the evolution of pure into mixed states are discussed. In particular, it is argued that, if energy is conserved, loss of purity is incompatible with the weakest possible form of Lorentz covariance.

"Sample Variance" in Small-Scale CMB Anisotropy Experiments

We discuss the effects of finite sky coverage and the uncertainty in extracting information about the power spectrum from experiments on small angular scales. In general the cosmic variance is enhanced by a factor of $4π/A$, where $A$ is the solid angle sampled by the experiment. As a rough guide, an experiment with sensitivity peaking at the $\ell$th multipole has to cover $\simgt\ell$ independent patches to have a lower ``sample variance'' than for a whole-sky measurement of the quadrupole. Our approach gives a relatively simple way of attaching an error bar to the theoretical prediction for a particular experiment, and thereby comparing theories with experimental results, without the need for computationally-intensive Maximum Likelihood or Monte Carlo calculations.

Entropy and Area

The ground state density matrix for a massless free field is traced over the degrees of freedom residing inside an imaginary sphere; the resulting entropy is shown to be proportional to the area (and not the volume) of the sphere. Possible connections with the physics of black holes are discussed.

The Angular Dependence of the Three-Point Correlation Function of the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation as Predicted by Inflationary Cosmologies

Inflationary models predict a definite, model independent, angular dependence for the three-point correlation function of $ΔT/T$ at large angles (greater than $\sim 1^\circ$) which we calculate. The overall amplitude is model dependent and generically unobservably small, but may be large in some specific models. We compare our results with other models of nongaussian fluctuations.

Dependence of Density Perturbations on the Coupling Constant in a Simple Model of Inflation

In the standard inflationary scenario with inflaton potential $V(Φ)=M^4-{1\over4}λΦ^4$, the resulting density perturbations $δρ/ρ$ are proportional to $λ^{1/2}$. Upper bounds on $δρ/ρ$ require $λ< 10^{-13}$. Ratra has shown that an alternative treatment of reheating results in $δρ/ρ\propto λ^{-1}$, so that an upper bound on $δρ/ρ$ does not put an obvious upper bound on $λ$. We verify that $δρ/ρ\propto λ^{-1}$ is indeed a possibility, but show that $λ< 10^{-13}$ is still required.
