Ideal-related K-theory for Leavitt path algebras and graph C*-algebras

We introduce a notion of ideal-related K-theory for rings, and use it to prove that if two complex Leavitt path algebras are Morita equivalent (respectively, isomorphic), then the ideal-related K-theories (respectively, the unital ideal-related K-theories) of the corresponding graph C*-algebras are isomorphic. This has consequences for the "Morita equivalence conjecture" and "isomorphism conjecture" for graph algebras, and allows us to prove that when E and F belong to specific collections of graphs whose C*-algebras are classified by ideal-related K-theory, Morita equivalence (respectively, isomorphism) of the Leavitt path algebras implies strong Morita equivalence (respectively, isomorphism) of the graph C*-algebras. We state a number of corollaries that describe various classes of graphs where these implications hold. In addition, we conclude with a classification of Leavitt path algebras of amplified graphs similar to the existing classification for graph C*-algebras of amplified graphs.

The Ranges of K-theoretic Invariants for Nonsimple Graph Algebras

There are many classes of nonsimple graph C*-algebras that are classified by the six-term exact sequence in K-theory. In this paper we consider the range of this invariant and determine which cyclic six-term exact sequences can be obtained by various classes of graph C*-algebras. To accomplish this, we establish a general method that allows us to form a graph with a given six-term exact sequence of K-groups by splicing together smaller graphs whose C*-algebras realize portions of the six-term exact sequence. As rather immediate consequences, we obtain the first permanence results for extensions of graph C*-algebras. We are hopeful that the results and methods presented here will also prove useful in more general cases, such as situations where the C*-algebras under investigations have more than one ideal and where there are currently no relevant classification theories available.

A groupoid generalization of Leavitt path algebras

Let G be a locally compact, Hausdorff groupoid in which s is a local homeomorphism and the unit space is totally disconnected. Assume there is a continuous cocycle c from G into a discrete group $Γ$. We show that the collection A(G) of locally-constant, compactly supported functions on G is a dense *-subalgebra of C_c(G) and that it is universal for algebraic representations of the collection of compact open bisections of G. We also show that if G is the groupoid associated to a row-finite graph or k-graph with no sources, then A(G) is isomorphic to the associated Leavitt path algebra or Kumjian-Pask algebra. We prove versions of the Cuntz-Krieger and graded uniqueness theorems for A(G).

Tensor Products of Operator Systems

The purpose of the present paper is to lay the foundations for a systematic study of tensor products of operator systems. After giving an axiomatic definition of tensor products in this category, we examine in detail several particular examples of tensor products, including a minimal, maximal, maximal commuting, maximal injective and some asymmetric tensor products. We characterize these tensor products in terms of their universal properties and give descriptions of their positive cones. We also characterize the corresponding tensor products of operator spaces induced by a certain canonical inclusion of an operator space into an operator system. We examine notions of nuclearity for our tensor products which, on the category of C*-algebras, reduce to the classical notion. We exhibit an operator system S which is not completely order isomorphic to a C*-algebra yet has the property that for every C*-algebra A, the minimal and maximal tensor product of S and A are equal.

Index maps in the K-theory of graph algebras

Let $C^*(E)$ be the graph $C^*$-algebra associated to a graph E and let J be a gauge invariant ideal in $C^*(E)$. We compute the cyclic six-term exact sequence in $K$-theory of the associated extension in terms of the adjacency matrix associated to $E$. The ordered six-term exact sequence is a complete stable isomorphism invariant for several classes of graph $C^*$-algebras, for instance those containing a unique proper nontrivial ideal. Further, in many other cases, infinite collections of such sequences comprise complete invariants. Our results allow for explicit computation of the invariant, giving an exact sequence in terms of kernels and cokernels of matrices determined by the vertex matrix of $E$.

Quotients, exactness, and nuclearity in the operator system category

We continue our study of tensor products in the operator system category. We define operator system quotients and exactness in this setting and refine the notion of nuclearity by studying operator systems that preserve various pairs of tensor products. One of our main goals is to relate these refinements of nuclearity to the Kirchberg conjecture. In particular, we prove that the Kirchberg conjecture is equivalent to the statement that every operator system that is (min,er)-nuclear is also (el,c)-nuclear. We show that operator system quotients are not always equal to the corresponding operator space quotients and then study exactness of various operator system tensor products for the operator system quotient. We prove that an operator system is exact for the min tensor product if and only if it is (min,el)-nuclear. We give many characterizations of operator systems that are (min,er)-nulcear, (el,c)-nuclear, (min,el)-nulcear and (el,max)-nuclear. These characterizations involve operator system analogues of various properties from the theory of C*-algebras and operator spaces, including the WEP and LLP.

Leavitt path algebras with coefficients in a commutative ring

Given a directed graph E we describe a method for constructing a Leavitt path algebra $L_R(E)$ whose coefficients are in a commutative unital ring R. We prove versions of the Graded Uniqueness Theorem and Cuntz-Krieger Uniqueness Theorem for these Leavitt path algebras, giving proofs that both generalize and simplify the classical results for Leavitt path algebras over fields. We also analyze the ideal structure of $L_R(E)$, and we prove that if $K$ is a field, then $L_K(E) \cong K \otimes_\Z L_\Z(E)$.

Operator system structures on ordered spaces

Given an Archimedean order unit space (V,V^+,e), we construct a minimal operator system OMIN(V) and a maximal operator system OMAX(V), which are the analogues of the minimal and maximal operator spaces of a normed space. We develop some of the key properties of these operator systems and make some progress on characterizing when an operator system S is completely boundedly isomorphic to either OMIN(S) or to OMAX(S). We then apply these concepts to the study of entanglement breaking maps. We prove that for matrix algebras a linear map is completely positive from OMIN(M_n) to OMAX(M_m) if and only if it is entanglement breaking.

Isomorphism and Morita equivalence of graph algebras

For any countable graph $E$, we investigate the relationship between the Leavitt path algebra $L_{\C}(E)$ and the graph C*-algebra $C^*(E)$. For graphs $E$ and $F$, we examine ring homomorphisms, ring *-homomorphisms, algebra homomorphisms, and algebra *-homomorphisms between $L_{\C}(E)$ and $L_{\C}(F)$. We prove that in certain situations isomorphisms between $L_{\C}(E)$ and $L_{\C}(F)$ yield *-isomorphisms between the corresponding C*-algebras $C^*(E)$ and $C^*(F)$. Conversely, we show that *-isomorphisms between $C^*(E)$ and $C^*(F)$ produce isomorphisms between $L_{\C}(E)$ and $L_{\C}(F)$ in specific cases. The relationship between Leavitt path algebras and graph C*-algebras is also explored in the context of Morita equivalence.

On the classification of nonsimple graph C*-algebras

We prove that a graph C*-algebra with exactly one proper nontrivial ideal is classified up to stable isomorphism by its associated six-term exact sequence in K-theory. We prove that a similar classification also holds for a graph C*-algebra with a largest proper ideal that is an AF-algebra. Our results are based on a general method developed by the first named author with Restorff and Ruiz. As a key step in the argument, we show how to produce stability for certain full hereditary subalgebras associated to such graph C*-algebras. We further prove that, except under trivial circumstances, a unique proper nontrivial ideal in a graph C*-algebra is stable.

Frame theory for binary vector spaces

We develop the theory of frames and Parseval frames for finite-dimensional vector spaces over the binary numbers. This includes characterizations which are similar to frames and Parseval frames for real or complex Hilbert spaces, and the discussion of conceptual differences caused by the lack of a proper inner product on binary vector spaces. We also define switching equivalence for binary frames, and list all equivalence classes of binary Parseval frames in lowest dimensions, excluding cases of trivial redundancy.

Vector spaces with an order unit

We develop a theory of ordered *-vector spaces with an order unit. We prove fundamental results concerning positive linear functionals and states, and we show that the order (semi)norm on the space of self-adjoint elements admits multiple extensions to an order (semi)norm on the entire space. We single out three of these (semi)norms for further study and discuss their significance for operator algebras and operator systems. In addition, we introduce a functorial method for taking an ordered space with an order unit and forming an Archimedean ordered space. We then use this process to describe an appropriate notion of quotients in the category of Archimedean ordered spaces.

Realizations of AF-algebras as graph algebras, Exel-Laca algebras, and ultragraph algebras

We give various necessary and sufficient conditions for an AF-algebra to be isomorphic to a graph C*-algebra, an Exel-Laca algebra, and an ultragraph C*-algebra. We also explore consequences of these results. In particular, we show that all stable AF-algebras are both graph C*-algebras and Exel-Laca algebras, and that all simple AF-algebras are either graph C*-algebras or Exel-Laca algebras. In addition, we obtain a characterization of AF-algebras that are isomorphic to the C*-algebra of a row-finite graph with no sinks.

Continuity of ring *-homomorphisms between C*-algebras

The purpose of this short note is to prove that if $A$ and $B$ are unital C*-algebras and $ϕ: A \to B$ is a unital *-preserving ring homomorphism, then $ϕ$ is contractive; i.e., $\| ϕ(a) \| \leq \| a \|$ for all $a \in A$. (Note that we do not assume $ϕ$ is linear.) We use this result to deduce a number of corollaries as well as characterize the form of such unital *-preserving ring homomorphisms. (This note may be of interest to C*-algebraists as well as algebraists who study noncommutative rings and algebras. It is meant to be accessible to a general mathematician and does not require any prior knowledge of C*-algebras.)

Graph algebras, Exel-Laca algebras, and ultragraph algebras coincide up to Morita equivalence

We prove that the classes of graph algebras, Exel-Laca algebras, and ultragraph algebras coincide up to Morita equivalence. This result answers the long-standing open question of whether every Exel-Laca algebra is Morita equivalent to a graph algebra. Given an ultragraph G we construct a directed graph E such that C*(G) is isomorphic to a full corner of C*(E). As applications, we characterize real rank zero for ultragraph algebras and describe quotients of ultragraph algebras by gauge-invariant ideals.

Equiangular tight frames from complex Seidel matrices containing cube roots of unity

We derive easily verifiable conditions which characterize when complex Seidel matrices containing cube roots of unity have exactly two eigenvalues. The existence of such matrices is equivalent to the existence of equiangular tight frames for which the inner product between any two frame vectors is always a common multiple of the cube roots of unity. We also exhibit a relationship between these equiangular tight frames, complex Seidel matrices, and highly regular, directed graphs. We construct examples of such frames with arbitrarily many vectors.

Ultragraph C*-algebras via topological quivers

Given an ultragraph in the sense of Tomforde, we construct a topological quiver in the sense of Muhly and Tomforde in such a way that the universal C*-algebras associated to the two objects coincide. We apply results of Muhly and Tomforde for topological quiver algebras and of Katsura for topological graph C*-algebras to study the K-theory and gauge-invariant ideal structure of ultragraph C*-algebras.

Strong Shift Equivalence of $C^*$-correspondences

We define a notion of strong shift equivalence for $C^*$-correspondences and show that strong shift equivalent $C^*$-correspondences have strongly Morita equivalent Cuntz-Pimsner algebras. Our analysis extends the fact that strong shift equivalent square matrices with non-negative integer entries give stably isomorphic Cuntz-Krieger algebras.
