Stability properties of stochastic maximal $L^p$-regularity

In this paper we consider $L^p$-regularity estimates for solutions to stochastic evolution equations, which is called stochastic maximal $L^p$-regularity. Our aim is to find a theory which is analogously to Dore's theory for deterministic evolution equations. He has shown that maximal $L^p$-regularity is independent of the length of the time interval, implies analyticity and exponential stability of the semigroup, is stable under perturbation and many more properties. We show that the stochastic versions of these results hold.

The UMD property for Musielak--Orlicz spaces

In this paper we show that Musielak--Orlicz spaces are UMD spaces under the so-called $Δ_2$ condition on the generalized Young function and its complemented function. We also prove that if the measure space is divisible, then a Musielak--Orlicz space has the UMD property if and only if it is reflexive. As a consequence we show that reflexive variable Lebesgue spaces $L^{p(\cdot)}$ are UMD spaces.

Stability theory for semigroups using $(L^{p},L^{q})$ Fourier multipliers

We study polynomial and exponential stability for $C_{0}$-semigroups using the recently developed theory of operator-valued $(L^{p},L^{q})$ Fourier multipliers. We characterize polynomial decay of orbits of a $C_{0}$-semigroup in terms of the $(L^{p},L^{q})$ Fourier multiplier properties of its resolvent. Using this characterization we derive new polynomial decay rates which depend on the geometry of the underlying space. We do not assume that the semigroup is uniformly bounded, our results depend only on spectral properties of the generator. As a corollary of our work on polynomial stability we reprove and unify various existing results on exponential stability, and we also obtain a new theorem on exponential stability for positive semigroups.

Sharp growth rates for semigroups using resolvent bounds

We study growth rates for strongly continuous semigroups. We prove that a growth rate for the resolvent on imaginary lines implies a corresponding growth rate for the semigroup if either the underlying space is a Hilbert space, or the semigroup is asymptotically analytic, or if the semigroup is positive and the underlying space is an $L^{p}$-space or a space of continuous functions. We also prove variations of the main results on fractional domains; these are valid on more general Banach spaces. In the second part of the article we apply our main theorem to prove optimality in a classical example by Renardy of a perturbed wave equation which exhibits unusual spectral behavior.

Complex interpolation with Dirichlet boundary conditions on the half line

We prove results on complex interpolation of vector-valued Sobolev spaces over the half-line with Dirichlet boundary condition. Motivated by applications in evolution equations, the results are presented for Banach space-valued Sobolev spaces with a power weight. The proof is based on recent results on pointwise multipliers in Bessel potential spaces, for which we present a new and simpler proof as well. We apply the results to characterize the fractional domain spaces of the first derivative operator on the half line.

Rescaled extrapolation for vector-valued functions

We extend Rubio de Francia's extrapolation theorem for functions valued in UMD Banach function spaces, leading to short proofs of some new and known results. In particular we prove Littlewood-Paley-Rubio de Francia-type estimates and boundedness of variational Carleson operators for Banach function spaces with UMD concavifications.

Fourier multipliers in Banach function spaces with UMD concavifications

We prove various extensions of the Coifman-Rubio de Francia-Semmes multiplier theorem to operator-valued multipliers on Banach function spaces. Our results involve a new boundedness condition on sets of operators which we call $\ell^{r}(\ell^{s})$-boundedness, which implies $\mathcal{R}$-boundedness in many cases. The proofs are based on new Littlewood-Paley-Rubio de Francia-type estimates in Banach function spaces which were recently obtained by the authors.

Fourier multiplier theorems involving type and cotype

In this paper we develop the theory of Fourier multiplier operators $T_{m}:L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^{d};X)\to L^{q}(\mathbb{R}^{d};Y)$, for Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$, $1\leq p\leq q\leq \infty$ and $m:\mathbb{R}^d\to \mathcal{L}(X,Y)$ an operator-valued symbol. The case $p=q$ has been studied extensively since the 1980's, but far less is known for $p<q$. In the scalar setting one can deduce results for $p<q$ from the case $p=q$. However, in the vector-valued setting this leads to restrictions both on the smoothness of the multiplier and on the class of Banach spaces. For example, one often needs that $X$ and $Y$ are UMD spaces and that $m$ satisfies a smoothness condition. We show that for $p<q$ other geometric conditions on $X$ and $Y$, such as the notions of type and cotype, can be used to study Fourier multipliers. Moreover, we obtain boundedness results for $T_m$ without any smoothness properties of $m$. Under smoothness conditions the boundedness results can be extrapolated to other values of $p$ and $q$ as long as $\tfrac{1}{p}-\tfrac{1}{q}$ remains constant.

Fourier multiplier theorems on Besov spaces under type and cotype conditions

In this paper we consider Fourier multiplier operators between vector-valued Besov spaces with different integrability exponents $p$ and $q$, which depend on the type $p$ and cotype $q$ of the underlying Banach spaces. In a previous paper we considered $L^p$-$L^q$-multiplier theorems. In the current paper we show that in the Besov scale one can obtain results with optimal integrability exponents. Moreover, we derive a sharp result in the $L^p$-$L^q$-setting as well. We consider operator-valued multipliers without smoothness assumptions. The results are based on a Fourier multiplier theorem for functions with compact Fourier support. If the multiplier has smoothness properties then the boundedness of the multiplier operator extrapolates to other values of $p$ and $q$ for which $\frac1p - \frac1q$ remains constant.

Cylindrical continuous martingales and stochastic integration in infinite dimensions

In this paper we define a new type of quadratic variation for cylindrical continuous local martingales on an infinite dimensional spaces. It is shown that a large class of cylindrical continuous local martingales has such a quadratic variation. For this new class of cylindrical continuous local martingales we develop a stochastic integration theory for operator valued processes under the condition that the range space is a UMD Banach space. We obtain two-sided estimates for the stochastic integral in terms of the $γ$-norm. In the scalar or Hilbert case this reduces to the Burkholder-Davis-Gundy inequalities. An application to a class of stochastic evolution equations is given at the end of the paper.

Maximal regularity for non-autonomous equations with measurable dependence on time

In this paper we study maximal $L^p$-regularity for evolution equations with time-dependent operators $A$. We merely assume a measurable dependence on time. In the first part of the paper we present a new sufficient condition for the $L^p$-boundedness of a class of vector-valued singular integrals which does not rely on Hörmander conditions in the time variable. This is then used to develop an abstract operator-theoretic approach to maximal regularity. The results are applied to the case of $m$-th order elliptic operators $A$ with time and space-dependent coefficients. Here the highest order coefficients are assumed to be measurable in time and continuous in the space variables. This results in an $L^p(L^q)$-theory for such equations for $p,q\in (1, \infty)$. In the final section we extend a well-posedness result for quasilinear equations to the time-dependent setting. Here we give an example of a nonlinear parabolic PDE to which the result can be applied.

Regularity of stochastic Volterra equations by functional calculus methods

We establish pathwise continuity properties of solutions to a stochastic Volterra equation with an additive noise term given by a local martingale. The deterministic part is governed by an operator with an $H^\infty$-calculus and a scalar kernel. The proof relies on the dilation theorem for positive definite operator families on a Hilbert space.

Evolution families and maximal regularity for systems of parabolic equations

In this paper we prove maximal $L^p$-regularity for a system of parabolic PDEs, where the elliptic operator $A$ has coefficients which depend on time in a measurable way and are continuous in the space variable. The proof is based on operator-theoretic methods and one of the main ingredients in the proof is the construction of an evolution family on weighted $L^q$-spaces.

Estimates for vector-valued holomorphic functions and Littlewood-Paley-Stein theory

In this paper we consider generalized square function norms of holomorphic functions with values in a Banach space. One of the main results is a characterization of embeddings of the form \[L^p(X)\subseteq γ(X) \subseteq L^q(X),\] in terms of the type $p$ and cotype $q$ for the Banach space $X$. As an application we prove $L^p$-estimates for vector-valued Littlewood-Paley-Stein $g$-functions and derive an embedding result for real and complex interpolation spaces under type and cotype conditions.

$R$-boundedness versus $γ$-boundedness

It is well-known that in Banach spaces with finite cotype, the $R$-bounded and $γ$-bounded families of operators coincide. If in addition $X$ is a Banach lattice, then these notions can be expressed as square function estimates. It is also clear that $R$-boundedness implies $γ$-boundedness. In this note we show that all other possible inclusions fail. Furthermore, we will prove that $R$-boundedness is stable under taking adjoints if and only if the underlying space is $K$-convex.

On the $\ell^s$-boundedness of a family of integral operators

In this paper we prove an $\ell^s$-boundedness result for integral operators with operator-valued kernels. The proofs are based on extrapolation techniques with weights due to Rubio de Francia. The results will be applied by the first and third author in a subsequent paper where a new approach to maximal $L^p$-regularity for parabolic problems with time-dependent generator is developed.

Maximal gamma-regularity

In this paper we prove maximal regularity estimates in "square function spaces" which are commonly used in harmonic analysis, spectral theory, and stochastic analysis. In particular, they lead to a new class of maximal regularity results for both deterministic and stochastic equations in $L^p$-spaces with $1<p<\infty$. For stochastic equations, the case $1<p<2$ was not covered in the literature so far. Moreover, the "square function spaces" allow initial values with the same roughness as in the $L^2$-setting.
