Exact large-deviation statistics for a nonequilibrium quantum spin chain

We consider a one-dimensional XX spin chain in a nonequilibrium setting with a Lindblad-type boundary driving. By calculating large deviation rate function in the thermodynamic limit, being a generalization of free energy to a nonequilibrium setting, we obtain a complete distribution of current, including closed expressions for lower-order cumulants. We also identify two phase-transition-like behaviors in either the thermodynamic limit, at which the current probability distribution becomes discontinuous, or, at maximal driving, when the range of possible current values changes discontinuously. In the thermodynamic limit the current has a finite upper and lower bound. We also explicitly confirm nonequilibrium fluctuation relation and show that the current distribution is the same under mapping of the coupling strength Gamma -> 1/Gamma.

Magnetization transport in spin ladders and next-nearest-neighbor chains

We study magnetization transport at high temperatures in several spin ladder systems as well as in next-nearest-neighbor coupled spin chains. In the integrable ladder considered we analytically show that the transport is ballistic in sectors with nonzero average magnetization, while numerical simulations of a nonequilibrium stationary setting indicate an anomalous transport in the zero magnetization (half-filling) sector. For other systems, isotropic Heisenberg ladder and spin chains, showing eigenlevel repulsion typical of quantum chaotic systems, numerical simulations indicate diffusive transport.

Eigenvalue statistics as indicator of integrability of non-equilibrium density operators

We propose to quantify the complexity of non-equilibrium steady state density operators, as well as of long-lived Liouvillian decay modes, in terms of level spacing distribution of their spectra. Based on extensive numerical studies in a variety of models, some solvable and some unsolved, we conjecture that integrability of density operators (e.g., existence of an algebraic procedure for their construction in finitely many steps) is signaled by a Poissonian level statistics, whereas in the generic non-integrable cases one finds level statistics of a Gaussian unitary ensemble of random matrices. Eigenvalue statistics can therefore be used as an efficient tool to identify integrable quantum non-equilibrium systems.

Excitation energy transfer efficiency: equivalence of transient and stationary setting and the absence of non-Markovian effects

We analyze efficiency of excitation energy transfer in photosynthetic complexes in transient and stationary setting. In the transient setting the absorption process is modeled as an individual event resulting in a subsequent relaxation dynamics. In the stationary setting the absorption is a continuous stationary process, leading to the nonequilibrium steady state. We show that, as far as the efficiency is concerned, both settings can be considered to be the same, as they result in almost identical efficiency. We also show that non-Markovianity has no effect on the resulting efficiency, i.e., corresponding Markovian dynamics results in identical efficiency. Even more, if one maps dynamics to appropriate classical rate equations, the same efficiency as in quantum case is obtained.

Transport in a disordered tight-binding chain with dephasing

We study transport properties of a disordered tight-binding model (XX spin chain) in the presence of dephasing. Focusing on diffusive behavior in the thermodynamic limit at high energies, we analytically derive the dependence of conductivity on dephasing and disorder strengths. As a function of dephasing, conductivity exhibits a single maximum at the optimal dephasing strength. The scaling of the position of this maximum with disorder strength is different for small and large disorder. In addition, we study periodic disorder for which we find a resonance phenomenon, with conductivity having two maxima as a function of dephasing strength. If disorder is nonzero only at a random fraction of all sites, conductivity is approximately the same as in the case of a disorder on all sites but with a rescaled disorder strength.

Coexistence of diffusive and ballistic transport in a simple spin ladder

We show that in a nonintegrable spin ladder system with the XX type of coupling along the legs and the XXZ type along the rungs there are invariant subspaces that support ballistic magnetization transport. In the complementary subspace the transport is found to be diffusive. This shows that (i) quantum chaotic systems can possess ballistic subspaces, and (ii) diffusive and ballistic transport modes can coexist in a rather simple nonintegrable model. In the limit of an infinite anisotropy in rungs the system studied is equivalent to the one-dimensional Hubbard model.

Optimal number of pigments in photosynthetic complexes

We study excitation energy transfer in a simple model of photosynthetic complex. The model, described by Lindblad equation, consists of pigments interacting via dipole-dipole interaction. Overlapping of pigments induces an on-site energy disorder, providing a mechanism for blocking the excitation transfer. Based on the average efficiency as well as robustness of random configurations of pigments, we calculate the optimal number of pigments that should be enclosed in a pigment-protein complex of a given size. The results suggest that a large fraction of pigment configurations are efficient as well as robust if the number of pigments is properly chosen. We compare optimal results of the model to the structure of pigment-protein complexes as found in nature, finding good agreement.

Diffusive high-temperature transport in the one-dimensional Hubbard model

We consider charge and spin transport in the one-dimensional Hubbard model at infinite temperature, half-filling and zero magnetization. Implementing matrix-product-operator simulations of the non-equilibrium steady states of boundary-driven open Hubbard chains for up to 100 sites we find clear evidence of diffusive transport for any (non-zero and finite) value of the interaction U.

Subsystem dynamics under random Hamiltonian evolution

We study time evolution of a subsystem's density matrix under unitary evolution, generated by a sufficiently complex, say quantum chaotic, Hamiltonian, modeled by a random matrix. We exactly calculate all coherences, purity and fluctuations. We show that the reduced density matrix can be described in terms of a noncentral correlated Wishart ensemble for which we are able to perform analytical calculations of the eigenvalue density. Our description accounts for a transition from an arbitrary initial state towards a random state at large times, enabling us to determine the convergence time after which random states are reached. We identify and describe a number of other interesting features, like a series of collisions between the largest eigenvalue and the bulk, accompanied by a phase transition in its distribution function.

Entanglement in stationary nonequilibrium states at high energies

In recent years it has been found that quantum systems can posses entanglement in equilibrium thermal states provided temperature is low enough. In the present work we explore a possibility of having entanglement in nonequilibrium stationary states. We show analytically that, in a simple one-dimensional spin chain, there is entanglement even at highest attainable energies; that is, starting from an equilibrium state at infinite temperature, a sufficiently strong driving can induce entanglement, even in the thermodynamic limit. We also show that dissipative dephasing, on the other hand, destroys entanglement.

Transport in a one-dimensional isotropic Heisenberg model at high temperature

Magnetization transport in a one-dimensional isotropic spin 1/2 Heisenberg model is studied. It is shown that in a nonequilibrium steady state at high temperature and constant small driving the magnetization current depends on the system length L as 1/L^{0.5}, meaning that the diffusion constant diverges as L^{0.5}. Spectral properties of a superoperator governing the relaxation towards a nonequilibrium steady state are also discussed.

Finite-temperature magnetization transport of the one-dimensional anisotropic Heisenberg model

We study finite-temperature magnetization transport in a one-dimensional anisotropic Heisenberg model, focusing in particular on the gapped phase. Using numerical simulations by two different methods, a propagation of localized wavepackets and a study of nonequilibrium steady states of a master equation in a linear-response regime, we conclude that the transport at finite temperatures is diffusive. With decreasing temperature the diffusion constant increases, possibly exponentially fast. This means that at low temperatures the transition from ballistic to asymptotic diffusive behavior happens at very long times. We also study dynamics of initial domain wall like states, showing that on the attainable time scales they remain localized.

Transport properties of a boundary-driven one-dimensional gas of spinless fermions

We analytically study a system of spinless fermions driven at the boundary with an oscillating chemical potential. Various transport regimes can be observed: at zero driving frequency the particle current through the system is independent of the system's length; at the phase-transition frequency, being equal to the bandwidth, the current decays as n^{-alpha} with the chain length n, alpha being either 2 or 3; below the transition the scaling of the current is n^{-1/2}, indicating anomalous transport, while it is exponentially small exp{(-n/2xi)} above the transition. Therefore, by a simple change of frequency of the a.c. driving one can vary transport from ballistic, anomalous, to insulating.

Non-Markovian behavior of small and large complex quantum systems

The channel induced by a complex system interacting strongly with a qubit is calculated exactly under the assumption of randomness of its eigenvectors. The resulting channel is represented as an isotropic time dependent oscillation of the Bloch ball, leading to non-Markovian behavior, even in the limit of infinite environments. Two contributions are identified: one due to the density of states and the other due to correlations in the spectrum. Prototype examples, one for chaotic and the other for regular dynamics are explored.

Spin transport in a one-dimensional anisotropic Heisenberg model

We analytically and numerically study spin transport in a one-dimensional Heisenberg model in linear-response regime at infinite temperature. It is shown that as the anisotropy parameter Delta is varied spin transport changes from ballistic for Delta<1 to anomalous at the isotropic point Delta=1, to diffusive for finite Delta>1, ending up as a perfect isolator in the Ising limit of infinite Delta. Using perturbation theory for large Delta a quantitative prediction is made for the dependence of diffusion constant on Delta.

Solvable quantum nonequilibrium model exhibiting a phase transition and a matrix product representation

We study a 1-dimensional XX chain under nonequilibrium driving and local dephasing described by the Lindblad master equation. The analytical solution for the nonequilibrium steady state found for particular parameters in [J.Stat.Mech., L05002 (2010)] is extended to arbitrary coupling constants, driving and homogeneous magnetic field. All one, two and three-point correlation functions are explicitly evaluated. It is shown that the nonequilibrium stationary state is not gaussian. Nevertheless, in the thermodynamic and weak-driving limit it is only weakly correlated and can be described by a matrix product operator ansatz with matrices of fixed dimension 4. A nonequilibrium phase transition at zero dephasing is also discussed. It is suggested that the scaling of the relaxation time with the system size can serve as a signature of a nonequilibrium phase transition.

A matrix product solution for a nonequilibrium steady state of an XX chain

A one dimensional XX spin chain of finite length coupled to reservoirs at both ends is solved exactly in terms of a matrix product state ansatz. An explicit representation of matrices of fixed dimension 4 independent of the chain length is found. Expectations of all observables are evaluated, showing that all connected correlations, apart from nearest neighbor z-z, are zero.
